Coach Mike Zimmer (1 Viewer)

Minnesota likes to hire coaches no one else really wants. Frazier was passed up many times, so was Zimmer. Doesn't seem that great when teams who have been performing poorly go and raid a team in Cincinnati that isn't winning playoff games. These guys are OK, I don't see the greatness everyone else does between him and Jay Gruden who went to Washington.
Yeah, Cincy is a talented team so I wouldn't give the coaches as much credit as they've been getting, especially with that recent playoff track record. I like Zimmer over Gruden though.
Perhaps Zimmer had a lot of input into drafting those talented players.
No perhaps about it - Bengals coaches are probably the most active in the draft process of any team in the league.

What do bengals coaches do now?

I remember that just before Marvin they didn't even have many scouts and personnel types and the coaches had to actually go scout the players after the season and on the rare weekend they were in a nearby city during the year. He came in and insisted this change and they hired some scouts and personnel types and the coaches weren't going to be asked to do it all.

I haven't read much of it in the years following. How has this developed since that point? Does Marvin go to many games? Watch a lot of tape?

Many of Zimmer's Ds have run both a 4-3 and a 3-4. In his presser, he mentioned doing this in Minny.

What roster changes do you envision are needed for him to pull this off?

Need a beast DT? Better/more athletic OLB? This DE is only going to be in on passing downs then....what do you think the player turnover will be to make this work?

I think winning the last game against Detroit cost the Vikings their chance to get a top QB. If one does fall to them at pick 8 then of course they take that guy. But if there isn't a QB there I would rather they not blow the pick by taking one anyways. There are a lot of needs on the defensive side of the ball.
Just an FYI, going into that last game, a win did not hurt/help the Vikings at all. They were locked into the #8 spot going into that game. It was the tie against the Pack and then the wins against the Bears and Eagles that really did them in, as far as draft position goes. Until then, they were hovering in the #3 spot. Going into the tie against the Pack they had 9 losses, they were out of contention, even in the NFCN. I don't advocate the coaches/players quitting for draft picks, but as a fan looking at what was best for the team long-term, the tie and those 2 wins were bittersweet as they fell down the draft board.

Those wins later in the season don't bother me. Just upgrading the coaching staff probably got the Vikings an "extra" couple wins in 2014...and if they get ANYTHING more out of the QB position in 2014, that'll be good for a win or two as well. Not that 7-9, 8-8, or 9-7 is what any fan is looking for. But the Vikings, if they can right the ship on defense and can keep Adrian Peterson healthy, should at least make things interesting into December next season.

Yah, that's why I said bittersweet. I'd never advise the players/coaches not to play to win, but with the QBs at the top end of the draft, was really rooting for the Vikes to be in a position to draft one once the season was "done" (as far as playoffs go). That said, I am really excited about what Zimmer and Norv can do with this team, and I think an 8-8, 9-7 win season in his first year is probably a good expectation.

They're slightly above average. NFL is full of average and bad teams with just a handful of good teams.

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he has no plans to stop coaching despite ongoing eye concerns.

"One eye or two, it really doesn’t matter. I’m going to be back," he said. "So we can put the retiring thing or whatever to bed quickly." Zimmer has undergone eight eye surgeries and is still recovering from his most recent procedure, which took place on May 17. He's resting at his home in Kentucky but will return to Minnesota during the first week in June and is hoping to resume his coaching responsibilities shortly after that. Special teams coordinator Mike Priefer served as interim coach when Zimmer missed Week 13 against Dallas last year.
