Commish's Six Month...No Ten Month House REBUILD....and Now We're Moving (1 Viewer)

I like the wood cabinets. We did our our 5 years ago I got rid of the white and redid them in oak. They were white since we moved into the home and we were looking for a change. One thing I did that looked something like yours was I doubled the size of the window. Lost a cabinet on each side but we had plenty of storage already. Also added 2 skylights to the kitchen.

I think youll like the gas range much more than the electric. my kitchen is setup similar to yours and my only problem is there isn't enough lighting towards the end of my island. its all recessed lighting so I may get an electrician to come out and add a couple more. one thing ive been considering is over the range getting a hanging pot rack. have you considered adding a radio/intercom system
We had gas in our last house. It's a night and day difference. We have two recessed lights above our island, though they aren't centered for some reason :wall: We get plenty of artificial light in there. Seeing isn't a problem. Never considered an intercom.
intercom is cool for parties because you can use Pandora or just radio for background noise. also for a large house its easier to tell your kids to do something over the intercom. also can be used at your front door to tell solicitors to f off

I had a glass electric stove at my last place, it seemed like it was harder to get a consistent cook on the food also most of my pots/pans are a bit round. it threw my stir fry off because it was hard to use a wok on it. + they are a pain to clean

I went to a open house model home, everything was super high end. Their cabinets had a antique finish on them which I guess is a new thing but they looked awesome. antiqued cabinets can change a room

we had an intercom in my house growing up (2 floors, ~2,500sf)... I don't remember me or anybody in my family ever using it.

what's the practical, day-to-day use for it? (not taking a stance, just curious)

this. The most use it ever got was putting labels on it so you knew which switch went to which room.

Yeah, we don't live in your standard FBG mansion ;) I don't have any use for an intercom. Music was mentioned, but I could address that in the new electrical I am putting in. The strips that run under the cabinet have plugs where I could put a radio and speakers. Problem is, that "feature" costs about $700 total for speakers and receivers. I'll stick with my Bose WIFI speaker that I can move around anywhere and control with any device on my home network.

that's true about the intercom I probably used it a couple times. I mainly use the system for music while doing crap around the house/ cooking/ or parties.. it was there when I moved in so I cant complain

my understanding with the electric is that it's a straight up BTU thing- gas gets hotter and faster.

so you've got an A/V system with the intercom attached?

I'm just remembering we had an AM radio attached to ours- I think my mom may have used it while in the kitchen (great sound on those intercom speakers btw... no), so I mispoke about the thing never being used.

The other part is when the gas is off, it's not heating....with electric, even though the coil might not be "on" it's still hot from when it was "on".

We have one of those that was installed when our house was built in '67. I'm the second owner. I still use that thing for the whole house radio. It actually needs to warm up. Ours is FM also.

The kids love it because they get radio in their room. It is definitely OLD sound though.

Our kitchen remodel will include:

2. Raising the existing cabinets two inches from their current location.

7. Installation of under cabinet electrical. This includes the outlets. Legrand makes a pretty slick system, but i need help with the wiring in the walls.
This was one of the things I did when remodeling our kitchen recently and it's definitely a winner. If you have not completed the electrical consider having an outlet wherever you might use an appliance. We ended up with 6 of them on three circuits along an overall 18' L-shaped countertop and it's really great to be able to adjust for virtually any prep you may be doing.

Did you use this Legrand system? If so, curious how it works for you. Seems pretty slick. Tonight, it looks like I'll need to add "patching holes in the walls" to my to do list...have several. I had forgotten about them.

This is the system we're using.

Outlets and lighting all in the same strip.
Looks good! But--no, nothing so clean. I probably tore out more wall than you will and just added outlets--also added a switch and a new over-sink fixture. When it came to under-cabinet lights then I could mount them and wire manage the cable to a convenient outlet. Only wanted undercabinet lights in two locations and that left all sorts of spots to plug in appliances, either temp or perm.

Only spot I wish I'd run another outlet is unside the under-counter corner cabinet. We installed a full depth fixed shelf corner instead of a lazy susan, and so far the stick on battery models have been unsatisfactory so we're just getting used to the shadows.

First question and asking for opinions....our sink is not lined up with our window (never noticed this before). So, my question is, what should I line up the overhead light with? The window or the sink?

I'd go with the window. Your eye is going to follow the line from the middle of the window trim vs. the sink.

About 1.5-2 inches
I agree with the window
I disagree.

now that it's too late.

sorry- I don't really disagree... that's the right call.

Day 3 in the books....another late night, but I got the cabinets installed and the holes patched with their first coat of mud. I'll finish up the mudding tonight and install sliding shelves in our pantry. I also have to create the door and install the slides for the trash can cabinet.

Cabinet 1

Cabinet 2

Funny, my wife and I would kill for a kitchen as nice as your before pics
We think it's an awesome kitchen. The cabinets were in great shape and we didn't want to rip them out. The appliances and cabinet color were what really dated it.

This whole process has me thinking that perhaps I shouldn't be sitting behind a desk anymore though :oldunsure:

Did hit a hiccup last night (found it this morning). When I detached the dish washer from the hot water line, I either also loosened the hot water valve under the sink or put a hairline crack in the line. The end result was a puddle of water on the floor and soaked cabinet bottom this AM. I know how to build from scratch...not sure how to go about removing the bottom of the cabinet and replacing it. The bottom of this cabinet is that melamine (sp?). There was a leak under there before, and it's absorbed the water...beginning to buckle a bit. Not sure what to do with that, but whatever I do will be later.

Sorry didn't read details -- are you just having the cabinets painted?

We're moving into a house with a kitchen that is similar to the one you are remodeling. One day we'd like to do a really high end gut, but for now we're thinking about replacing the floors (black granite tile, we want wood), and repainting the cabinets (they are dated like yours). I may want to replace the granite top on the island with something that will work better with the new colors as well, we'll see.

The things we are doing are really being driven by the appliances we ordered. I'd have kept all the cabinets as is if they would have held modern appliances, but they didn't. So I had to build an oven cabinet. Then I decided that since I was doing that cabinet, I might as well do something about the cabinet over the fridge that we can't use because it sits so far back we can't reach it. So that's why I have the two new cabinets (in the same wood as existing). Otherwise we would have just had them painted.

But when you go to remodel, it's my recommendation to look at the quality of your existing cabinets and if they are quality cabinets and you like the profile (just want to change the color) paint them....don't replace them. I had a couple companies come out and give me estimates on a complete replace of cabinets and they were between $30 - 50K. The most expensive painting estimate was $9k and decided to go with a local woman for just over $3k. She does awesome work and wanted to get a job local so offered us a significant discount.

Well, I'm at a stopping point until materials come in. I have the backsplash to do. It comes in on Tuesday. Once that's done, I can install the track electrical system. Got some learnin' from the electrician while he was here. It should be a breeze. Once those are complete, I'll be heading to Florida to vacation a couple weeks with the family then they'll come home with me. When we get back the cabinets should be done and all that's left is the installation of the appliances. I'm very pleased with how things have gone.

Last night I completed some trim work for the cabinets and installed the sliding shelves in the pantry. I also touched up some of the drywall work from a couple days ago. I did chicken out on cutting my granite for the cooktop. I have a buddy of mine who does it for a living coming over today to help me do that, but that's all I have on the schedule for today.

That's the part that really slowed down my progress :) I got 85% done with my kitchen remodel (full cabinet and appliance replacement) without the family around in 2.5 weeks. After that, I'd say it took me another 3 months to finish up the last 15% on weekends with the family around. Good luck!

Well, if all goes as planned, they will walk into the house and the only thing left to do is put the appliances in. We still need to decide on pulls/knobs and a couple light fixtures, but those are a weekend job at worst.

After a bit of a breather, I get back to work tonight. The backsplash comes in today. I'll pick it up and begin work. Never done one like this before. I've done individual tiles, but never one with little pieces on a mat. Hoping for the best.

Is the general consensous to figure out one spot where you want to have all your adjustments (similar to other tile work) or just adjust as necessary as you go?

Yeah, so that sucked. It looks pretty freakin' cool up, but it was a PITA to install. Tomorrow I'll grout and take some pics. It took me two nights to do that freakin' thing. Glad we chose it, but I'll be doing more simple patterns from here on out.

Only thing left to do before I leave for vacation is the crown molding. It's coming in on Monday or Tuesday. I'd be done with this thing (minus the painting) if people would get stuff to me when they promised to

Surprised you did the tile before the cabinet painting.

backsplash looks a lot better installed than the sample tiles looked (which I really didn't like, but held my tongue). NIce work

The top piece isn't what I ordered....what I ordered came broken, so I decided to go to HD and look to see what they had. It was close enough so in the interest of finishing, I am returning the jacked up moldings and put these up instead. Idiots!

Just so there is no chance the painters get anything on the tile or grout. That's more of just me being anal about stuff like that, so there's really no other reason than that.

All of your progress looks great by the way. My wife and I are in the process of doing ours as well. I've already painted the cabinets. Granite countertop is in (actually is pretty much exactly what you have.) Backsplash going in probably next week, and then the tile floor to finish. Appliances have been in for awhile.

Gotcha. I have threatened anyone walking into my kitchen that if they mess up my backsplash, there'll be hell to pay ;) As I type this, I am thanking my lucky stars that I decided to farm out the painting. I'm watching the prep and it's not for me. It's going to take two days just to prep before the first sander touches an inch of wood.

It's complete outside the wall painting, last coat of poly on the cabinets and the installation of the cooktop/downdraft. That's been the thorn in my side. They came Monday to do the appliance installs and told me they couldn't install the downdraft and cooktop because of the location of the hole. It was about an inch off. I called back to the store and they said the installers should have addressed it. It will be taken care of on Monday. Painting should be done today or tomorrow. Then all that's left are minor upgrades/installations (new faucet and lights). The first 90% went really smoothly...this last 10% not so much. Will post pics when complete.
