Continuous Rays thread: fun season (3 Viewers)

Before they re-signed Loney I was hoping for something like Zunino, Smoak, and Tyler Pike for Price, Lobaton, and a PTBNL.

Now I'm not sure who they should target?

 
I don't know enough about the SD guys to have an informed opinion but it sure does seem like the Pads got the two best players.

 
I don't understand this trade at all.

The Rays front office has earned our trust, but on the surface this deal looks bad.

 
It's an interesting deal to me because it's not often you seen that many prospects involved in a relatively minor deal. We've seen how much the fair market value of LOOGYs has gone up. I'm a bit surprised the Rays took a bunch of lottery tickets in exchange for Torres.

Forsythe is just a guy. He can hit a little and is an OK fielder at multiple positions. I liked Boxberger's arm from when he was in the Reds' organization. He's always put up exceptional K/9 numbers although command has been an issue. He could be the prize of the package if the Rays coaching staff can bring his walk rates back down to what he put up in the minors.

 
Eephus > in regards to Boxberger, isn't your last sentence exactly what they just did with Torres? Why trade that for another guy who needs the same work?

Buy low, sell high? I originally thought arbitration eligibility might have factored in but that doesn't appear to be a significant difference. Maybe this is a precursor to the Price deal.

I'm sure Maddon will figure out some way to maximize Forsythe's value to the team but he'd be a better Kelly Johnson replacement if he swung left handed.

And could stay healthy. As a Padres, I love the guy, but he just was always dinged up.

However, if he stays healthy, he is a team player and has a good approach at the plate and plays hard all the time.

 
Well now they add Balfour as the closer. Team looks great. Goodness. Gotta give them credit spending the money.

 
Hopefully this is the year. It's been kind of a slow burn for them. This front office and team deserves a ring.

Karns is probably a high leverage reliever for the Rays and/or insurance for Helickson. Rivero and Vettleson were highly regarded prospects for the Rays. Both are top 10 on Fangraphs prospects list.

The Rays must really like Karns. This seems like a "win now" move for them.

 
Rivero and Vettleson are between 15-20 on every other list I've seen. Fangraphs has them higher than anybody.

Karns is definitely the 7th starter now IMO. I highly doubt they made this trade to convert him to a reliever. One of the first things Friedman said was he is a 200 innings horse.

I guess we'll see where they put him. He has a decent fastball and a plus curve ball, but the change needs work.

 
Tampa only had one player on BA's annual top 100 prospects list. Odorizzi isn't even a Rays draft pick, he's on his third organization.

They've made some questionable draft picks and had some bad luck but it's just tougher to find players when you're picking later. Some of this is cyclical and they've graduated a bunch of players recently. There doesn't appear to be the talent on deck that we've been accustomed to.

Prospects graduate. Moore, Archer, Cobb, Hellickson, Jennings, Myers....that's a lot of top 100 talent to rotate through the system one way or the other the past 3-4 years.

But their drafting has been poor lately. Luckily most of this group is locked up for 4-5 years.

 
The Twins just gave Ricky Nolasco, who sucks, 48 mil over 4 years.

If they pick up his options the Rays will give Archer, who does not suck, 44 mil over 8 years.

I don't know how this franchise does it.

Do you understand the concept of service time?

It's not a bad deal for either side. Archer gets $25M of security in case he gets hurt. The Rays get options on some below market rate years towards the end of the deal. Worst case for the Rays is eating a deal that's around one year of Sabathia's salary.

I don't think it'll be possible to declare a winner for at least four years.

Nah never heard of it.

Of course it's not apples to apples (never said it was), just a pretty startling comparison. It's very low risk for the Rays, even if he is just a league average starter.
