Continuous Rays thread: fun season (1 Viewer)

Is today Price's last home game with the Rays?

:kicksrock:
It certainly looked that way. They're going to get a nice haul for him.

I keep wondering why he's acting like he's so bummed? I'll never try to get into the head of an athlete regarding earning potential, but I'm sure the Rays have offered him an extension to stay here.

I can't imagine taking $10 million less per year to stay but I wouldn't be a crybaby when they were forced to trade me either.
I imagine they offered him something like 5/75 but he can get 7/140 out there.
That's my point. If he really wants to be here that badly what's $5M a year?

Yea I don't get it. He was talking about it again yesterday too. Very weird. I doubt the Rays super low balled him but that's really the only thing that makes sense.

If the Cardinals can get Price, I think they are the favorites. They have young pitching and position prospects. Tampa should be able to get a nice haul.

The A's offered Russel for Price but were shot down.

Makes you wonder if a bigger haul is coming or if they just aren't trading him.

So are we back in this thing now? I'm so confused.
Get it under 5 games in the next couple weeks. Nobody is running away with the East, and with the bats waking up the Rays look like the best team in the division all of a sudden. Baseball.

What does Hellickson bring to the table? If he an actually give them a chance to win when he starts they'll be in good shape. Bedard is basically an automatic loss.

Posting this in the Rays and Cubs threads as I'm a fan of both teams:

The Tampa Bay Rays pitcher spoke hypothetically about his future at an All-Star Game press conference on Monday and said he believes no championship celebration would be sweeter than one experienced by the Cubs and their long-suffering fans, who have waited 106 years.

Price is not sure where he’ll wind up if he’s traded in the next few months or when he becomes a free agent in 2016, but the 2012 American League Cy Young winner sees how the Cubs have stockpiled top prospects after the trade of Jeff Samardzija and finds their future full of intrigue.

“Winning absolutely is something you want to do," Price told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "Being a part of something special is also something you want to do. You can take that to a first-place team. You could take that all the way to a last-place team like the Cubs. With the talent they have coming up they could be a very special team in a few years as well. That would probably be the coolest city to win a championship in. They haven't done it in I'm not sure how long. To do that there that would be the coolest city to win a championship in right now."
The Cubs need an ace and actually having one who wants to be in Chicago would be fantastic. The Rays are clearly asking for the moon for David Price's services. The Cubs have the best farm system in baseball and their plethora of infield prospects has already been discussed in trade speculation. They would have enough to meet Tampa's demands for Price without blowing up the entire farm system.

Maybe the Rays really do want to make one more run at it with Price in an AL East that looks extremely weak and would trade him after this season to Chicago?

Trade (Russell and CJ Edwards?) for Price, sign a free agent like Scherzer or Lester, bring up the future, and the Cubs are instant contenders in 2015.

As an O's fan, the Rays scare me far more than any other team in the East. I keep waiting for the wheels to fall off on the Yankees, still believe it's a matter of time.

But it's getting late for Tampa. My prediction is the Orioles go 33-24 the rest of the way and finish with 92 wins. If that's the case, then the Rays would have to go 39-15 to catch them.

Happy to see the Red Sox go in the tank - seemed unfair to me that every other division had at least one weak team to beat up on to help for Wild Card positioning, while every East team was tough. Starting to look like Boston might be that team for us the rest of the way. And I think the Rays still have a shot for the Wild Card - figure they can get to around 88 wins and then see how things shake out.

The more I think about it, it is a pretty good haul for the Rays. Not sure why so many are down on Franklin.

I'm more curious as to the reports from a while back that the A's offered the same or very similar package to the Rays for Price as they did for Shark. I understand Smyly is a very cheap good LHP and that is hard to come by and Franklin is a potentially solid 2B with pop but I think I would choose the Addison Russell package over both.

I don't think Oakland does that deal. The A's aren't going to pay David Price 20 mil next season.

The Rays absolutely love him.
I like the Rays roster going forward. I think Alex Cobb is an ace, Odorizzi is learning how to pitch well, and Archer is turning it on. Smyly is a good young pitcher, Still have Matt Moore as well. That is a nice young starting 5.

Offense is a work in progress, but Will Myers and Franklin are two big time prospects.

I have a buddy who works for the Rays. An ops guy came and talked to them:

They love what they got it return. Not only because of the talent but they have control for years to come. The adames kid they are projecting to be an absolute stud, in 3 or 4 years.

By no means does this mean we're given up this season. Still have Myers (August) and dejesus (late August) coming back. Just when it got to the numbers of it, we were only getting 10ish more games out of price the possible outcomes of those and what smyley could do wasn't worth keeping price around who honestly wasn't going to resign here anyways.

Here is some Adames stuff Cappy
Thanks.

@jaysonst: Continue to hear good things on Willy Adames, the SS prospect #Rays got in Price deal. One exec comped him to Elvis Andrus w much better bat
He doesn't steal any bases, seems to project as a 3Bman.

He's 18 with good plate skills, could be a good player but not sure what his ceiling is. Hard to say with guys this young and raw.

So what if they take these Price savings and re-sign Shields this offseason?

:excited:

Not saying it will happen, and I don't know his market value but I have to think it will be a little less at least given his age.

Trying to look for bright spots here.

Still have a lot of pitching depth.

Cobb

Archer

Odorizzi

Smyly

Hellickson

Moore

Colome

Romero

Karns

Montgomery

This is the big point people don't seem to be getting. I think we were all just kind of shocked there wasn't a WOW prospect in there somewhere. At least I was. It seems likely the speculative deals weren't actually on the table. Russell, Taveras, etc.

Knightro was saying on his podcast that if you look at Chris Archer's and Drew Smyly's numbers side by side, they are nearly identical down to the inning. I think Smyly is underrated because he was just thrown in as a reliever, and never was evaluated as a prospect.

He also thinks Nick Franklin is the key to the trade (as do I), and he compared him to Ben Zobrist for his position flexibility and potential. Franklin to me is a guy who just needed to get consistent playing time, but he certainly will be better off in Tampa than he was in Seattle (Seattle screws up pretty much every one of their prospect hitters).

Yea I've warmed up to it, especially when you consider how small the market is for teams that can afford 20M next year and have the prospects to match.

Smyly likely will be a 3 WAR pitcher at his peak and while that's not David Price that's plenty good enough to be part of a strong staff.

I am looking forward to seeing Franklin play. I imagine Zobrist is gone this offseason and he takes over.

Man that 2008 team feels so far away now.

He's a class act. Hope we can sign him LT.There is a long history of quiet, unflamboyant athletes and how appreciated they are in the D. Guys like Kaline, Yzerman, Dumars and Barry. Just do your thing, and if you don't thump your chest, we'll worship the ground you walk on. That's Motown: low key is elevated, blue collar image (forgetting they're millionaires) is preferred, act like you've been there before.

Don't know a lot about Price but he seems like a Detroit kind of guy. And I seriously respect how emotional he has been about leaving Tampa - the connection was genuine and mutual.

Boxberger is ridunkulous. My God.
Was sitting in left field tonight, so I didn't have a great view.

Immediately looked up his strikeout of Teixeira when I got home, because I could tell it was something special.

He's really good. I hated the Torres trade when it happened, but I love me some Box now.

I thought that was the best pitch I've seen this year. Perfect.
