Continuous Rays thread: fun season (1 Viewer)

I still think this team competes in the East. Even with all of the signings the Blue Jays made, the Rays are better, IMO. Obviously, Matt Moore needs to come back, and Will Myers needs to take the next step, but this is a solid team.

The interesting thing to me, and I guess it's no small thing, but they're really only less Price and Maddon from last season when everyone thought they were a World Series contender.

They must be really down on Myers if they're looking to deal him. This would be the second organization to give up on him before he's 24. Odd rumor. He's one of two guys in the lineup who can hit the ball out of the ballpark. We know they'll pitch and play defense.

edit: Steven Souza, Jake Bauers, Burch Smith, Travis Ott, and Rene Rivera for Myers and Hanigan.

I'm intrigued.

I find it peculiar that Law says that Souza doesnt have a power swing, and that he lacks "loft" and "finish", etc, etc, whereas his power numbers are pretty great over the last couple years.

The MLB media seems to keep echoing that the Nats came away big on this, but the Nats window is obviously very open and they traded a guy who could've returned some immediate help for guys that are a couple years off.

I'm definitely excited to see him and hope he's the starting RF out of the gate.

I soured on Myers more than most. His K rate was abysmal coming through the minors and last year kind of was the culmination of that. I just don't think he's going to be what people thought.

God I hope not. I've watched Will Venable flail at sliders for almost 2500 ABs now. Don't think I can take another dude with that disease.

I agree... I think we see why KC protected him in the minors. I think he will be a solid mlb contributor and a starter but not an All Star-MVP guy. I see this as selling high

Trying to figure out this lineup:

Jennings - CF

KIERMAIER - RF (my phone autocorrected this to all caps so going with it)

Jaso - DH

Longoria - 3B

Loney - 1B

Souza/Guyer - LF

Franklin/Forsythe - 2B

Rivera - C

Cabrera - SS

Also have DeJesus hanging out for the time being. Maybe they'll trade him or start Souza in Durham.

Jaso DH ahead of Souza? My knee jerk to that trade was Jaso as backup C/pinch hitter, so they can get Souza full time ab's but that is probably my dyno ownership of Souza clouding my vision.

I have Souza starting in LF.

Jaso will get all the ABs against RHP at DH.

supposedly

Souza in RF

Kiermaier in LF (not sure if platoon with Guyer who otherwise is 4th of)

DeJesus some DH ab with Jaso IF they can't trade him for a bag of balls

@TBBJwilkerson: "We need baseball in this region," to keep the area's momentum. - Jeff Vinik #TBBJSports2015

So that's your answer to the question to if the team is ever moving.

@MarcRyanOnAir: Jeff Vinik: "I'm 100% committed to trying to keep baseball in this area. We need baseball for this area to be what we want it to be."

Is he the best thing to ever happen to local sports?

Vinik gets it. Maybe Stu Sternberg can just sell the team to him?
That's been a major topic around for a while now. Vinik buys and Sternberg sells and gets a team in the NE. But Vinik has very publicly stated he's not interested, and focused on just retail/residence building in the Channelside area.

I think Vinik ends up with the team eventually. Really makes so much sense.

Really liking the way this team looks. Sounds like I might be on an island though. With McGee out for a while they could use some more bullpen help though.

I think depth is a concern with this team. They don't have much margin for injury, especially on the pitching side, until Moore returns. They don't have the financial resources of their AL East competitors to add salaries during the year and their farm system isn't as strong as in the recent past.

I think Karns is fine as a 4th guy for now. Smyle and Colome don't sound like they'll be dead for long. Could skip the fifth spot a few times through I think to begin the year.

The big problem with pitching being the strength of your organization is pitchers get hurt. A lot. Just ask any Mets' fan today how they feel about their gluttony of pitching.

The Rays have been really lucky regarding pitching injuries through their strong years. Until recently, most of their big guys all stayed healthy.

Rays homers: is there chatter that this is the year Odorizzi perhaps puts it all together? I see he put on 15 lbs, he was excellent after a terrible start last year, K ratios excellent, and unlucky w/re to BABIP. Seems like the recipe for a 2nd year breakout, no?

Pretty somber. The optimism I had for them has worn off with all the arm injuries. Now a new stadium location search is officially dead. :sadbanana:
