POSTED 11:42 a.m. EDT; UPDATED 12:15 p.m. EDT, August 4, 2004COWBOYS KILL QUINCYA league source tells us that the Dallas Cowboys informed quarterback Quincy Carter on Tuesday night that he will be released.Carter, a second-round pick in 2001 and then-quarterback of the future, got eight starts in his rookie year after the team abruptly dumped presumptive opening-day starter Tony Banks during training camp. In 2002, Carter shared time with that year's quarterback of the future -- Chad Hutchinson -- who recently was cut by the 'Boys.Last year, Carter started all 16 games in a low-risk, don't-screw-it-up maintenance role, which resulted in an unlikely playoff berth. But the arrival of Vinny Testaverde (who as we recently reported looks good) and the acquisition of 2004 quarterback of the future Drew Henson made Carter the likely odd man out. With Testaverde in position to lead the term in the short term and Henson regarded as the guy who'll eventually try to squeeze a toe into Troy Aikman's glass slipper, there was no need to keep Carter around.Lost in this three-year game of "Replace the Hall-of-Famer" is that Jerry Jones hasn't acquitted himself as the team's G.M., at least when it comes to landing quarterback talent.Or it could be that he's far too impatient to give a guy a chance to develop. Under that approach, however, Terry Bradshaw would have been pumping diesel back in Looziana long before he developed into a bona fide star. Then again, the NFL places more pressure on everyone to succeed now, and with an endless array of options available, there always will be a temptation to make a change unless/until a long-term answer is found.Though as of 12:15 p.m. EDT, no word of the Carter release appears anywhere, the 'Boys have scheduled a press conference for 2:30 p.m. EDT, at which time the Tuna undoubtedly will confirm this move.
