of course it's early ... but could be BIG news that Vinny will be the guy this year and that Henson will definitely be the guy next year (or sooner).

What a horrible move if they don't sign someone else.A senior citizen starting being backed up by a guy who hasn't played football for years.Vinny won't make it through the season, it could get real ugly in Dallas.

This would be one of the dumbest moves I have seen. Sure, Carter is no phenom at the position, but he did everything that was asked of him, and got the team to the playoffs. You can't tell me that they feel comfortable with Vinny and Henson back there. I have my doubts.

Exactly what I was thinking. Who else is out there that could back-up Vinny?

Is their something about Vinny that I am missing? He didn't look so hot on the Jets last year when thrust into the starting lineup. I don't really get this. I am by no means a Q. Carter fan but I am not a Vinny fan at this stage in his career. Wow.

If true, wow!
Double that. Don't take this wrongly but for a guy who carries a bag, a paperbook and a 2B pencil to the team meetings, I think he is dumb.
No, just sounds like a guy ready to take good notes and and be a great student of the game.

Why is there so much profanity and slander on that site? Are you being duped Beans? Or if PFT always so unprofessional?COlin

I just wanted to post in case anyone didn't notice this thread. As a Cowboys fan, I sure hope this isn't what it seems.

EDITED: TOO SLOW!!!

all I know is that they say "a league source" told them.I'm not a fan of the amount of cussing on the site, nor the way they slam people ... but they've broke NUMEROUS other stories before ESPN/CNNSI/CBS Sportsline/etc.I'm anxiously awaiting the official news.BTW: When they are wrong, they admit it and make a bigger deal about the retraction, than most of the talking heads at ESPN/CNNSI, who'll mask a retraction in the middle of a notes column.

Maybe the other players couldn't understand Quincy in the huddle because of his freakishly huge tongue. I mean seriously, doesn't that guy's tongue look way too big for his mouth?

I cannot see any possible benefit to the Cowboys for them to release Carter at this time.None.

This could be a big one. Good scoop Beans. I was only asking b/c I don't read PFT.com and I was a little suprised at some of the content...Once again, thanks for posting this and a link. COlin

Last year, most everyone was down on Q, but now you guys are shocked that he would be released? It makes some sense to me.They signed Henson to be the future. Vinny was brought in as the vet teacher role (possibly the starter this season, probably the starter if Q does get waived). How are they in a worse position this year than last year by releasing Q? They atleast have an experienced QB that knows Parcells system, and they've added a legitimate running threat. So what if they lose Q. Sure he gained some experience last year, but Vinny has Parcells experience in boatloads. If Q did start to come around, then what do the Cowboys do with a handsomely paid Drew Henson? Leave him on the bench? Start him and be faced with the Palmer/Kitna criticism? If the future is definitely NOT in Carter, then I don't see the harm in letting him go.

Nobody's really hyping Carter. It depends what you think Vinny has left in the tank. If you think he still has it and can stay healthy, then yeah, it's not a bad move. I think most people think Vinny's pretty much done, and that Henson is not ready. That, IMO, is why everyone's a bit shocked.

That's what i'm thinking. If Vinny can make it through the whole year then I could see it not backfiring, but if he gets hurt I would be shocked to see Henson come right in and produce well after years off.Henson said he didn't even throw a football for a couple years. If he is ready this soon then more power to him, but it would be quite shocking to see a guy be able to play at a high level after such a long layoff not even throwing a football.I'd bet they are bringing in another vet to back up Vinny if Carter is in fact released.

POSTED 11:42 a.m. EDT; UPDATED 12:15 p.m. EDT, August 4, 2004COWBOYS KILL QUINCYA league source tells us that the Dallas Cowboys informed quarterback Quincy Carter on Tuesday night that he will be released.Carter, a second-round pick in 2001 and then-quarterback of the future, got eight starts in his rookie year after the team abruptly dumped presumptive opening-day starter Tony Banks during training camp. In 2002, Carter shared time with that year's quarterback of the future -- Chad Hutchinson -- who recently was cut by the 'Boys.Last year, Carter started all 16 games in a low-risk, don't-screw-it-up maintenance role, which resulted in an unlikely playoff berth. But the arrival of Vinny Testaverde (who as we recently reported looks good) and the acquisition of 2004 quarterback of the future Drew Henson made Carter the likely odd man out. With Testaverde in position to lead the term in the short term and Henson regarded as the guy who'll eventually try to squeeze a toe into Troy Aikman's glass slipper, there was no need to keep Carter around.Lost in this three-year game of "Replace the Hall-of-Famer" is that Jerry Jones hasn't acquitted himself as the team's G.M., at least when it comes to landing quarterback talent.Or it could be that he's far too impatient to give a guy a chance to develop. Under that approach, however, Terry Bradshaw would have been pumping diesel back in Looziana long before he developed into a bona fide star. Then again, the NFL places more pressure on everyone to succeed now, and with an endless array of options available, there always will be a temptation to make a change unless/until a long-term answer is found.Though as of 12:15 p.m. EDT, no word of the Carter release appears anywhere, the 'Boys have scheduled a press conference for 2:30 p.m. EDT, at which time the Tuna undoubtedly will confirm this move.

ESPN Radio is talking to a Cowboys beatwriter and the dude talked about Quincy being in the lead guy for the job. No mention about the press conference.

More importantly I now need to find a another QB in the 15K contest for $4. Oh wait Vinny is $4. If its true he could be a steal at that price. From bad to better, just like that :excited:

This sucks...my dynasty draft is Sunday and I traded up to the #2 waiver wire to pick up Henson. Now he will go #1, I am so pissed...

I still see Henson starting/playing less than the 50% of time as required to extend his contract. Hello Vinny.Hello ROmo?

From Peter King on his training camp postcard from Dallas...Media people are cute sometimes. On Sunday morning, after a practice during which Vinny Testaverde threw better, tighter and longer spirals than fellow Cowboy quarterbacks Quincy Carter, Drew Henson and Tony Romo, someone asked Parcells if Testaverde still has the arm strength to be a starting NFL quarterback."Pffffffffff," Parcells said. That is his disdainful way of saying: Are you nuts? Did you just see that out there, when he threw a beautiful 35-yard strike to Glenn, just off because of blanket coverage by Terence Newman.Instead of saying anything snide, Parcells said: "Till the day before he dies," and then turned to the next question.Parcells has taken to calling Testaverde "Tyson," as in Mike, because they're both old guys still fighting to play. Testaverde laughed at that one. He said the difference between him and Tyson is that Tyson is fighting because he has to, and Testaverde is playing because he wants to.I just get the feeling, the strong feeling, that Testaverde will be the starting quarterback for this team at some point this season. Parcells just trusts him too much.

Carter sucked. His good games were flukes. He is on a good day a faster/dumber Kordell Stewart. Vinny is an upgrade, he may be but hell he does not have alzheimer's. Give him 4 seconds in the pocket and recievers running routes he will do ok. He is no Peyton Manning, but he will not kill you like Carter and he can make the throws.

Just heard this on the radio as well.I wouldn't sweat it as a Cowboys fan. I knew Q was a ####ty pick when they drafted him in the first place. He is a horrible QB and will never be a good QB. Vinny is old and Henson has little experience, but I would rather have either of those guys insyead of Q. I don't care what Q's fantasy #s were, I would never have him on my team.*Do you know how many top players came from the university of georgia during the period that Q was there? A LOT! Do you know how many times Q beat georgia tech? NEVER! With that much tallent Q should have gotten atleast one on the yellow jackets. He is a crappy QB. Good riddance to bad rubbish!-I'm out A'right, A'right, A'right... :boxing:

There almost has to be a QB coming in from somewhere if this is true.I think that this just furthers the notion that Boyz are already throwing in the towel for this season and playing for the future. You know, the same notion that occurred to a lot of us when the Boyz decided not to draft Jackson or Jones (Kevin) in the 1st round and instead blew off this draft to start getting reday for next year's draft.Vinnie will get his butt handed to him on a platter if the O-Line plays anywhere near like it did last year, then it will be up to Henson and Romo to shoulder the load, yeah right!

In my opinion......this is more of a feather-in-the-cap for Henson than for Vinny. The learning curve for Henson has just been majorly adjusted...and the Cowboys obviously believe he can handle the adjustment.

does anyone else think there is more to this than what first meets the eye? I mean two days ago bill parcells said quincy was in the best position to start. IMO there must be something else; ie... a big verbal confrontation or something that broke the camel's back.

IIRC, the contract accelerator provision is 15% not 50% of QB snaps on the season.

None.
Maybe they're excising a locker room cancer. QC didn't sound too happy about the move to add Henson, and could easily have ended up in Parcell's doghouse with a few ill-timed comments.Tuna is sending a message: This is my team. You don't like it? You're gone.

Maybe he and Antonio Bryant gave the Tuna some pro-Japanese literature to read written on a towel that they threw at Bill's head.(Sorry, that may be too much topical infomation contained in one sentence for people to understand and laugh at.)
