Crappy Movies That Get Good Reviews (1 Viewer)

A brilliant masterpiece.
Argh. Jim Carrey sitting on a kitchen floor weeping and wailing about his father was about as illuminating as going to the local Y and watching a bunch of hairy old men find their inner child.

Could not stand it.  The only thing I liked about the movie is its epigraph and premise, which I actually sort of love. The rest -- Kate Winslet has to be one of the most unlikable characters in recent history (she really pushes suspending disbelief when it comes to why Carrey likes her so much) -- I could leave in the dustbin of artistic history. Just awful.

Awesome. That Kate is so unlikable is part of the brilliance. There is no why Carrey loves her - and that's the point: you can't choose who you love. And that applies to those who had their memories erased (Carrey and the assistant) or those who try to take advantage (the other assistant and the hobbit). Even David Cross and his girlfriend illustrate this.

And don't get me started on the cinematography. The set transitions to memories retold, without CGI, are how it should be done.

Most of you are confusing "crappy movies" with "movies I didn't like for some reason".   Saying movies like Goodfellas and Forest Gump are crappy is like saying a Porsche 911 is a crappy car because you don't like its exterior design.

I guess these are all fair points, but I didn't get that "love isn't a choice" out of the movie, which I probably should have been watching for or should have noticed.

In addition, my friends liked it, and I generally trust their taste, but it's a Charlie Kaufman script, and his stuff has never done anything for me. From Malkovich to Synecdoche and probably beyond.

And now I'm reading the script again and hating it again. Joel-y? Tangerine? And to think I kept an open mind for all that minute.  :P

The Master an all time great?  :lmao:

I don't really expect us to agree much as I don't like Radiohead and think that Willie Nelson is one of the worst singers of all time. I guess it fits that we have opposite opinions on films, too.
Sorry you don't enjoy quality.

Monty Python's Life Of Brian is pulling 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and I have no idea why. I kept waiting for the funny and it was very few and far between for me.

I'd bet there's a great movie lurking in a vault behind the master but what was released is pretty crap as a movie. Feels like Scientology fears snipped it to death

Obviously we have a different opinion on what constitutes quality.

My complaint with The Master and many of PT Andersons films is that while they have very good acting, they also have unlikable characters with meandering plots. By the end, I couldn't care less what happens to anyone in them and they take forever to conclude. Scorcese's films often have unlikable characters but the characters and situations are much more interesting.

This thread only works if you also have to post your favorite movie

I wouldn't expect those that love fast and furious to necessarily see the value in a Coen brother film

Deadpool.

What a terrible movie.  Bad acting. Dumb script.  I'm all for violence and crudeness, so that didn't turn me off one bit.   I watched it twice just to make sure and I give it a zero.

That's where you're wrong. I have love hate with the Coen's but their style usually leaves memorable impression.  But I can appreciate a dumb action movie that knows it's a dumb action movie. Fast and furious is a guilty pleasure.

Yes I think Spotless works so well because all of the characters in it are pathetic and you're right its about how you can't choose who you love.

Royal tennanbaums
Now that you mention it, Wes Anderson specializes in films devoted to studying the lives of pathetic people.  His films are similar to Eternal Sunshine (expect Sunshine was reaching for something more with its message about how you can't choose who you love).  Wes Anderson probably needs to take a cue from Sunshine and add a layer of depth to his films.  ( I could pick timeless messages to explore out of a hat like "people never change", "the secret to happiness is the acceptance of yourself", "follow your gut", "don't follow your gut", "live in the moment", "the truth shall set you free", "your beliefs filter your reality" )

You could argue that Tennanbaums was reaching for more with a message of "you can't pick what family you are born into".

'American Beauty' - also snagged Best Picture.

 ####### joke  :wall:
One of my all time favorite movies. So many poignant scenes.

Spacey and Bening having an unexpected moment of conciliatory romance on the couch and her killing the mood by telling him to be careful with his beer on the expensive couch and him screaming it's just a couch.  Absolutely nailed it.

He has buried his own identity for his entire life and when he gets laid off he finally starts peeling away the facade and taking charge of his own life.   It's not some Hollywood hero story.  He doesn't just do admirable things.  He smokes pot and has a crush on a high school girl and stops letting his wife play "Lawrence Welk" at dinner.   Which is such a great scene because you realize how much she's controlled their lives for years down to the music at dinner hour.

But while she's controlling, she's painfully vulnerable in her own ways.  Trying and failing to sell that house with the "lagoon like pool".  And you see her become what she really wishes she could be - not married to some loser, but getting "####ed by a king". Firing a gun.  Finding out that the king of real estate doesn't actually have a perfect life either and has a cracking facade of his own with his trophy wife.

And the daughter and her friend are great characters too.  The daughter sandwiched between fighting parents and a #####y best friend who acts like she's the hottest girl in the world, while she tries to buy into the life she's supposed to have but just looks awkward and unhappy as a cheerleader.   She's awesome.

The family next door is no better.   A military tough guy swallowing his secrets and being overly tough on his son.  The mother trying so hard to have the perfect house and perfect breakfast and just quietly miserable and staring off in silence.   The drug dealing son who might be the only rational person in the whole movie and everyone thinks he's the crazy one.

It's an awesome movie.   I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it but maybe someday you can give it another chance.

It's not as good as V for Vendetta but it's a nice film.

A guilty pleasure, to me, is much different than a identifying one of my favorite movies.  I have lots of guilty pleasures but they wouldn't come close to making my top 10

I agree.  Calling American beauty overrated is now overrated.

Roger Ebert was enamored with "Paris, Texas".

It was a three and-a-half hour movie where two hours was spent with Harry Dean Stanton and his uncombed hair staring stupefied at the barren Texas landscape.

I never got the love for Dark City and feel like I should have.
