Culpepper signs with Lions (1 Viewer)

When would it be realistic for Culpepper to be able to play given that he has to learn the offense and he's been out of football for a while? 4 weeks? Maybe 3 if he's in good shape and Orvlosky is playing terrible?

Also, I know that the Lions coaches have said that they're not going to play Stanton just b/c of where he was drafted, but why wouldn't they want to get a look at him as they plan for next year?

What is it this year and next?

That will give him a chance to play in a few weeks and then he will have a shot next year to compete for the starting gig. I guess Detroit was the only team to even give him a shot at next year, good luck Cpepp.

What offense?

Because the Lions are an organization of idiots and they have no plan. Just one opinion of a Lion's "fan", I'm a victim of my geographic location.

Any possible value?
No.....but what it means to me is bad news for Stanton. Recently, Orlovsky's been given the starting job for good this season unless he gets outplayed in practice by Stanton. That may seem like common sense but many thought regardless of how Orlovsky played unless they won games (which he hasn't) we'd see Stanton in there some time this season. With that information and now the signing of Culpepper, I can't see how that's good news for Drew Stanton.

C-rottenpepper blows but as a Calvin Johnson owner :lmao: Just send Calvin deep every few plays and let the bum throw it up for grabs.

This move will shortly, if not immediately, make Stanton the #3, and again we're seeing the mess the Lions have created in the last few years from the draft. Seriously, in the history of the NFL has there ever been such an addiction to stupidity? C. Rogers, M. Williams, J. Harrington...all out of the league! Countless other choices barely hanging on...which seems to be the fate of Stanton. Lions execs count Backus as being one of their best picks in the last 10 yrs... that should tell you how tragic it is in Detroit. Sorry for the rant; I'm a long suffering fan hoping for something good to happen...sometime.

I really have no idea because I'll be honest, I hated the Stanton draft pick. When they said it, I said wasted No. 2 pick. However, this preseason, I have to admit that the limited time I saw him, I was impressed. Then he got hurt and here we are.So, either he's hurt more than what we know or for some reason, he's in the doghouse. This were bringing him along slowly thing doesn't fly when the Lions haven't won a freaken game.

It's a 2 year deal. I just wonder what the Lions are thinking with this move. Stanton should be playing IMO. Now they have signed another QB who will take more reps from Stanton. They need to evaluate the QB talent on the roster already and the best way is to play them.

Will the cuurent GM (Mayhew) and Coach (Marinelli) be here next year? If not why make this move now? The next GM/Coach of the team, whomever they are, may not see any value in the signing C Pep and cut him as some as they are hired................Waste of money IMO.

The sad part is that Culpepper is probably the most accomplished QB the Lions have ever signed in the history of the organization. I don't know if he still has any gas left in the tank, but old man Kitna is done and the rest of this roster is thin with talent.

Well I guess a lot of FF owners like him..in five leagues and he was just picked off the WW in all of them.

With the Lions sch. even Manning can't help them this year. 0-16

Jesus, the Lions refuse to let time heal all wounds. Get draft picks, get better scouts, work internally. QB was a hole but one of many, good luck to them... they're going to need it. I am very curious about the contract though, anybody get any numbers?... Just wanna see if it's close to that 10 mill a season he wanted lolololol

I say week 11 at the latest, he's starting. Picked him up in two leagues a week ago, he's got a nice playoff schedule

The Oline is dreadful. The Lions really should be looking to improve that aspect of their team. I don't know if any QB could prosper with the protection there.

 who needs a playbook? they can't run, pass block, or just about anything else. I'm all for a punter deep shotgun formation, and more often than not, just chuck it deep for Calvin. Like he had in MN (minus Rob Smith & Leroy). watching orlovsky more than I'd like to admit on the NFL ticket, dude just isn't close to starting NFL quality. not sure how he's even backup material, but this is the kittys we're talking about.hope the changes bring some long term improvements to the lions. lord knows the DET fans deserve and need it.

When was the last time an unemployed QB signed with a team halfway through the season and subsequently made an impact?Anyone? Bueller?

:hey: The problem wont be Culpepper. He might have a game or two down the stretch that teases fantasy footballers into picking him up due toa couple bombs that Calvin catches that make the bottom line of his stats look good. The bigger issue is the coaching and GM for the Lions. They're horrible........even without a great deal of talent Marinelli has been a horrible NFL coach. If Ford Jr. really is taking over more of the ownership duties from dear ole dad than he better have the balls to pay up for a big time person who will want the challenge of a major rebuild project. They're gonna have plenty to work with in the draft with a top 3 pick, the Cowboys picks, and even the possibili9ty of trading down their pick for a couple first rounders. They suck EVERYWHERE so as long as they don't keep drafting wide receivers they wont be able to screw it up that bad now that Millen and his wonderul scouting ability is gone.

Kitna is the one who gets value in Dynasty. He probably gets let go and catches on with a team elsewhere that needs a veteran passer with maybe an O line that can block.

How is it possible that this management team and coaching staff can have any input on the future of the organization when clearly they won't be with the team next year? Unless of course Mayhew, Lewand, and Marinelli are all coming back. I will kill myself if that is the case.

Ford believes in stability.

Let's remember that this is a JIM COLLETTO offense. Not that hard.

Well, bringing in Culpepper is an understandable move even for a coaching staff that likely wont be back. First of all, these guys, while lousy at their jobs, are still professionals. They're gonna "try" to make moves they think may benefit the team now and possibly in the future. Culpepper will likely see little game action this year even if and when he gets to game shape. But the free agents next year available for QB's are thin. They get him now and sign him for two years and they've at least got him on the team and he gets a good shot at trying out for the starting job NEXT year. Worse scenario is he continues to stink and they just release him next year.......best case scenario who knows. They know Orlovsky's not the guy and Stanton's just not ready yet. Yes, they could draft a 1st round QB next year but the Lions stink in so many different ways and at so many different positions that drafting a QB next year early may not even be the best way to start.

Stanton sucks. It was a wasted 2nd round pick. Homer pick by Millen. He is now on his second offensive coordinator who thinks he stinks. Please name me one game where Stanton put the team on his back and won in college.

Thank you. The guy threw for nearly 5,000 yards in 2004. That's absurd.Again, I don't understand this thread. He's an upgrade, and if he starts he has the potential to be deadly with a guy like CJ2 in the mix. (Shame Roy still isn't there, that could be absolutely scary).
