Culpepper expected to be dealt to Dolphins

BY SEAN JENSEN

Pioneer Press

Daunte Culpepper is about to get his wish.

The Vikings are expected to trade their frustrated and injured Pro Bowl quarterback to the Miami Dolphins today for a second-round draft pick in next month's NFL draft.

Vikings officials and Culpepper didn't immediately respond to interview requests.

The 11th overall pick of the Vikings in the 1999 NFL draft, Culpepper's seven-year tenure with the team included three Pro Bowl appearances.

But after a disappointing start to his 2005 season, Culpepper tore three of four ligaments in his right knee Oct. 30 against the Carolina Panthers, and his attempts to upgrade the 10-year, $102 million contract he signed in 2003 have been rebuffed by the Vikings.

Culpepper said last Wednesday that Vikings management sent him a "disturbing e-mail" that prompted him to request a trade or his release. That night, after learning of his e-mail correspondence to news outlets, the Vikings aggressively started shopping him to other clubs, including the Miami Dolphins and the Oakland Raiders.

In an interview last week, owner Zygi Wilf said he had to change course from his original plan of keeping Culpepper.

"He seems to feel that his future is best served somewhere else," Wilf told the Pioneer Press. "We have to move on for the best interests of our team."

could we add 'possibly'in the title for now?

nothing in the report indicates a source, that is is not hearsay

I think that's great news long term for Chamber's owners. He's put up good numbers with the QB and offense merry go round. Once he and C-Pep establish a rapport he could easily be a 1st tier WR for fantasy.

Did Miami have him take a physical? No way I give up a 2nd rounder at this point for Culp if I'm not sure he's coming all the way back.

What is this Email that the Vikings sent Daunte? What was so disturbing about it?

Did they send him some porn? Probably from a sight called Sex-boat.com and he saw some NFLers having sex on a...ooops!

FOXSports.com has learned the Vikings and Dolphins have agreed on a trade with Miami sending a second-round pick to the Vikings in exchange for the Pro Bowl quarterback.

The trade is contingent upon Culpepper passing a physical.

Listening to Jensen on KFAN right now...Sources indicate its done.

Dolphins were the only team to consider a 2nd round pick and Brees wanted too much money.

Last i had heard the vikes said no physical allowed. If the phins traded for him right now with nophysical they are dumb. Why take that risk? Also, why not wait and make sure the vikes don't gut him before his bonus is due? Odds are they won't cut him, but for all the phins know his knee could be a wreck.

MORE TO COME

I'm sure he'd fail any physical he was given. There's no way his knee could even be 60% right now....

That wasn't there when I posted. If there is a physical fine, if not it would be the dumbest move ever.

I've always thought of Chambers as Moss Jr. so this should make for some interesting games to watch. I believe Dolphin fans owe Brees a thank you card.

If Daunte can be near the player he was previous to his injury the Dolphin fans are in for a treat.

To those who worry about his decision making and other "intangibles" I would suggest that Coach Saban is supposed to be some sort of coaching genius. With the structure that he's put in place (and opposed to the chaos of the Tice/McCombs era), Saban should be able to bring out the best in Daunte and that best is pretty great.

They don't expect him to be 100%, they only want to know that he is on schedule with no setbacks.

I agree. I think this is a great move for the vikes if pepp is healthy, but given the injurry and the speculation this is far from a done deal. The physical could still sour this whole thing.

WOW.

As a long time Dolphin homer this news shocked me. It came out of nowhere. I'm not sure how I feel about this trade right now. I was expecting Brees and now we got CPepp.

The Brees negotiations must have ended very badly. Saban was probably on the phone with the Vikings the minute it broke down.

Exactly. I'd imagine that the physical is a formality at best. There isn't a doctor alive that can say with any certainty that his knee will ever hold up to playing football again. I'm sure it's more to make sure there are no surprises.....like a ligament is still torn or something similar. IMO.

If this is true the most important thing it implies is the Brees has serious issues. ESPN claims that Brees was willing to take less to come here and yesterday all the talk was that the FINS where seriously leaning towards Brees.

 I wouldn't call it a formality. They want to know how bad that knee was hurt, what his long term chances are, and what his chances are for this year

I think the physical could still sour the whole deal.

I understand the Vikes desire to get rid of Culpepper, but he's arguably one of the premier franchise QBs in the league with incredible physical talent - probably the most sought after asset - and the Vikes just gave him away for a second rounder. As a Vikes fan I'm happy to say we've made some great moves this offseason, but Miami is getting a steal here.

I also don't think Brad Johnson is the best choice right now for us next year. I love the guy, but his arm is incredibly weak. Granted we're going to be a more west coast, run the ball type of team, but we have some deep threats (MRob and Troy). Ideally we go after Brees, but perhaps we'll pursue Aaron Brooks.

Gonna be a completely different Vikes team though. Gonna miss those games where C-Pep just launched deep balls to Moss all day and he made sick catches.

B Johnson does have a history of not being able to play a full season due to injuries... they must bring in another QB, I just don't see him as the starter (but that's just me)

I am really pulling for Brooks to go to MIN

:blackdot: You guys are missing the point about the physical. It is NOT just about the knee as the knee is NOT healthy and would not pass a physical. The physical is too make sure his shoulder, back etc.. are in great shape. assume his knee was perfect, wouldn't you give him a physical?

To show I'm not a Bitter Jet fans Ooofffaaa.... I can't say I'm as excited as when I thought Brees was going to Miami....A healthy Culpepper presents a lot of challenges for a defense - To me Brees wasn't going to keep DC's up at night...

It implies that the Dolphins were not willing to pay as much as the Saints. If they thought he had serious issues they would not have offered $8 million in guaranteed money.

As a fins fan this sucks IMHO, not looking forward to watching the big cry baby throw 2 INTs for every TD and fumble once a game. That is if he can even walk onto the field.

Then they were never that serious. A 260 lb mobile QB tore 3 knee ligaments 6 months ago. His knee is f'd up. This is no surprise to anyone. The physical is not to determine that he hurt his knee.

Brees doesn't want to play in NO, I think it was the FINS not Brees who balked.

 135tds

86ints

If he gets healthy he's better then any QB you've sniffed since Marino, by a LONG shot. If I were a fins fan I would be ecstatic! You just got the ultimate buy low. The vikes screwed up again by taking their best player, waiting tillhe is injurred durring his worst year ever and decided that was the time to sell. And you guys got the prize.

:goodposting: What do the Dolphins have to lose. When players are playing well along side him, Culpepper is a top 5 QB. I'm furious right now the Vikes traded him at his lowest market point. We've now given Moss and Culpepper away for pennies on the dollar.

how is he going to pass the physical?

Hope this is true. Now, N.O. can take Brees.

Then, unless they trade down the Titans can take Leinart instead of Vince Young.
As a Stallworth owner :pickle:

I'm still not sure how I feel about this. CPepp is a big strong armed franchise QB but who knows if his knee will ever be the same.So before CPepp is ready I guess the Dolphins are stuck with the following:

Gud Frerotte

Cleo Lemon

Brock Berlin
