D-Will sits out on Wednesday with knee injury (1 Viewer)

I'm not much of an insider, but maybe I didn't convey the rain angle enough in my previous post. In 36 hours, we had almost 5 inches of rain and wind gusting to 40 mph. The Panthers do not have a full size indoor practice field. They practice off site at Charlotte Sports Center on turf of unknown substance.

This is the field: http://www.charlottesportscenter.com/football/surface.shtml

Not exactly NFL stuff.

Practicing on a cramped field with no football lines and a low ceiling while toddlers run around nearby and U2 blares from the speakers above isn't the most ideal place to do it.

With the remnants of Hurricane Ida stubbornly hovering over Charlotte and with the Panthers one of only 10 NFL teams without an indoor practice facility, the team's workplace the last two days has been a small artificial turf field at a nearby indoor sports complex.
The width forced the Panthers to run plays sideways, with the equipment staff putting tape where the hash marks should be. Cones marked a virtual sideline.
So perhaps you can see why someone with a sore knee might not want to risk further aggravation. This isnt an unwarranted change in practice participation. There's serious extenuating circumstances here.

"It's somewhat like an NFL field," Fox said.

I think he's active and see 30% of the carries. I
I disagree. If he plays then it's a full workload. What is the point of activating a starting RB only to give him 30% of carries? This minimizes his game flow and contribution. He's either active with 100% workload or inactive.
I am not saying the idea of a full workload wont be there. If he had problems enough in limited practice yesterday to miss practice today I think it's a real possibility he aggervates it during the game.I just dont see him getting a ton of carries when he has a knee that is limiting/missing practice and his backup is very ggod as well. I see no better than a 50/50 split this weekend and a nightmare.

Man, that sucks. Why can't they get a decent practice facility?
Neither the Giants nor Jets had one until this year. The old practice bubble was about 60 yards long.

Hmm, dinged up DWill and/or Ronnie in a somewhat decent matchup and/or Benson going up against a stout run D...

Be interesting to see what the pregame shows call on this. I have a feeling it'll be a 12:45 lineup set.

I don't think there's anybody that does more with less than DeAngelo.

Benson is revived in Cincy because he's getting 30+ carries a game and not sucking terribly, D-Will is basically the inverse of that. He's averaging 5.2 ypc and 9.3 ypr YTD on a team with no credible passing offense and in a 60/40 carry share with Daily Show. He has 75% of Benson's carries and has MORE total yards, 7 TDs and a long run of 77 yards.

I think even if the workload is limited against a mediocre run defense, he's still start worthy unless you have overwhelmingly better options. A limited workload in Carolina has a slightly different definition than in other places, because of their total lack of passing offense.

If DWill is active tomorrow and you are an owner who handcuffed Stewart, do you roll with Stewart due to the uncertainty of DWill's injury and the fact that his playing time and/or carries could be limited? I myself am leaning towards Stewart.

No.I think if he plays that he gets a normal workload. Why would they let him play if he isn't well enough to do so? And I do think he will play and do well.edit: Just saw that Carolins plays next Thursday, so that could play a role in the usage of both Williams and Stewart this week.

I'm thinking about rolling with both.

On radio talk I heard something about how DWill sat out due to poor practice field conditions on Friday more than he was really hurting. Also many close to the team think he is fine. Maybe thats wrong but I hope not

Is it true that D Will has practiced both Monday and today this week, preparing for Thursday? And I saw that J Stew actually missed both Monday and today.

How did D Will look on Sunday? I couldn't watch the game.

The Panthers didn't practice yesterday, but they did today and Williams did practice. Stewart didn't, but that isn't unusual for him this year. Williams looked good this past Sunday. The only thing to worry about this Thursday in regards to the running game is that they lost Jordan Gross for the season, so the OL will have to shuffle a couple people around.

Yes.....from what I've read, Wharton moves to LT which isn't a horrible downgrade from Gross. But who takes over at guard? Their running game didn't miss a beat when Gross left in the 2nd quarter. Still was very strong.

Mackenzy Bernadeau will take over at guard. Gross was the leader of the line and a great LT as well, so his absence will be felt. Bernadeau did a nice job filling in at guard in the second half last week, so hopefully all will be well with the line. Hopefully FB Brad Hoover will be back soon. They need him.

Rotoworld...The Panthers will start Mackenzy Bernadeau at left guard for the rest of the season.Normal starting left guard Travelle Wharton will shift to left tackle to replace Jordan Gross, who is out for the season. Bernadeau was a 2008 seventh-round pick and isn't nearly as powerful as Wharton. Downgrade the Panthers' potent running game a little.

With the short week, Deangelo being fine, and J Stew always needing time to rest his aching achilles, does anyone sense a big week for D Will on 20 or more carries?

I think it will be like it always is. Stewart has been playing with that injury all season, but he is tough as nails, and I don't think a short week will result in him having less playing time. He might not even practice tomorrow, or just practice lightly. I could be wrong, but I think it will be the usual carries for Williams and Stewart.

The local insiders think Wharton/Bernadeau > Wharton/Gross as far a run blocking goes. Major downgrade in pass protection. Calling it the Oreo cookie line...with only the center being a white guy.

I am wondering with D-Wills knee issues if J-Stew wil be the primary goal line RB from here on in?

http://profootballfocus.com/by_position.ph...&numgames=1Gross has been less than advertised in pass blocking this year. Not terrible, but Wharton has been there before and should be no worse than Gross.

I think you're right about the run blocking downgrade though. Gross was top 10 for run blocking value among tackles (RT and LT) and relatively penalty free.

Guards aren't too bad either. Vincent leaves a little to be desired, but nothing's changing on the right side, at least.

Interestingly, Ryan Kalil is the #1 run blocking center, top 10 in pass blocking. Win.

I think the impact should be minimal, imo.

I really think DeAngelo is the one that puts up the #'s tonight. Stewart usually doesn't get much work until a 4 day rest. Due to his sore achilles I think he might be used lightly tonight.

PS I have both so I'm showing favortism.
