Dallas Cowboys Offseason Thread (1 Viewer)

Brian Schottenheimer seems like the perfect pet coach for Dallas.

You guys that live in the Eagles threads and game day threads, there is always time to switch over!:laugh:
All are welcome in this thread. This is fbg, not a fan only board

Anyway, Dallas could sign a drunk monkey at HC and still win the division every other year

Thats not the goal.
Eagles fans are somehow experts on winning super bowls now since they backed into ONE in their entire lives. Can’t make this **** up

No. But we have made 8 nfc championships this century. Still waiting on you guys

Is that the goal? Do they give things for those?

I do have one name that might be a longshot, but he might be an improvement over any other candidates Jerry might consider: Pete Carroll.

That's right. He has a ring from his time in Seattle and he might be the only guy who can get Dak to come back to All-Pro form. Does anyone know if Jerry has interviewed Pete Carroll?

Clearly the right move was to ****can Mike and promote Quinn but that ship has sailed.

My guess is if he can’t get Deion it’s going to be some dope until Witten is done coaching his boys. Then it will be Witten.

I believe it’s a set of steak knives.

Swear I'm not hear throwing shade, but after seeing the MASSIVE turnaround in Washington once we no longer had Dan Snyder f'ing things up, doesn't that make you guys want Jerry Jones out in the worst way? I swear he's KILLING your franchise in the same way Dan Snyder killed ours for decades. I'm sure the rest of this division hopes Jones continues to own the team forever, but if I was a Dallas fan I'd be trying to find a way to setup and bust Jones in some kind of sting operation and force him to sell the team. He's without question the worst owner in the NFL IMO.
Most know this. There isn't anything they can do. Jerry Jones is cut from the same cloth as many rich powerful people, he's Richie Rich, just never grew up.

What we've learned so far... no one with any meaningful NFL clout, or sense, seemingly wants to coach the Dallas Cowboys.
You'd think that Pete Carroll(even though he's old) would look at Dallas as the better opportunity.
This tells us a lot.

I think it CONFIRMS a lot. It tells us nothing we don't already know. Jerry is impossible to work for unless you are agreeable to his meddlesome ways and bend at the knee. That's not Pete Carroll. Pete also now has Tom Brady in the building - a grown-up the Raiders' organization has lacked for decades. He can work with Tom to build a culture. He can't do that in Dallas. The culture is there. It's Jerry's way.

Mark Davis is finally admitting he has a problem and needs help. That's the first step in recovery. Pete can work with that.

For Dallas, it's sad to say but this is going to get a lot worse before it ever gets any better. As bad as 7-9 feels, it's about to get a whole lot worse.

I've been a Cowboys fan since the '80s, and now I've cursed my son. I was talking to him about the bleak state of the Cowboys, and it reminded me of the scene from the Howard Stern movie "Private Parts."

Researcher: The average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes.
Kenny: How can that be?
Researcher: Answer most commonly given: "I want to see what he'll say next."
Kenny: OK, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern?
Researcher: Good point. The average Stern hater listens for 2 1/2 hours a day.
Kenny: But if they hate him, why do they listen?
Researcher: Most common answer: "I want to see what he'll say next."

Cowboys games almost always get the highest ratings, in large part because of their fan base, but also because of the amount of people who tune in to see them lose. If they're watching, who cares why?

Forbes says the Cowboys are the most valuable sports team in the world at $10 billion, despite not having done anything in almost 30 years. Jerry bought the team for $150 million. Jerry is winning, every year. Jerry continues to win. What's the incentive to make a team better when your investment continues to grow despite consistently mediocre results?

Unless something changes in a hurry, Colin Cowherd is reporting that Brian Schottenheimer is the guy. And then, Cowherd eviscerated the move. As he should. As we all should. Well, not Eagles fans nor anybody else in the NFL, but Dallas.....this is a dark dark dark day.

If they're going to go with someone with no NFL head coaching experience, I'd rather they hire someone like Ryan Day or another successful college head coach.

I would prefer Marty Schottenheimer and he's been dead a few years.

This is as bad a hire as an NFL team could possible make. Brian has never been a head coach at any level and has been fired or demoted numerous times as an OC. He didn't even call the plays in Dallas last season. It's like the woman from Major League is in charge here.

This is the key to what is wrong with them.

I think early in his Cowboys ownership he really cared about winning but that's changed. I've got a lot of friends who are tight with the Jones family inner circle and they've been telling me for a few years now he cares more about cruising around the mediterranean in his yacht then chasing Super Bowls.

I would rank Jerry's priorities this way:

1. Money
2. Fame/attention, celebrity owner, etc,etc.
3. Winning

This sucks hard for fans of pro teams when their ownership gets this mindset. And with so much money in TV, taking the "he won't get another dollar from me" stance is not scaring any of them.

Marty Schottenheimer would have been the perfect coach for Dallas. Great regular seasons, only to choke in the playoffs.

On the Twitters I am seeing that Cowboys fans are unhappy that Al Harris has been hired away by Ben Johnson in Chicago.

I remember him as player but was not aware of his coaching with the Cowboys. Apparently, he has a lot of potential to be a defensive coordinator someday.

Yeah, he shined as a secondary coach. Not happy he left the Cowboys. I don't blame him though.

Sadly, this is human nature apparently. You know what type of posts/videos/memes that have the most comments on social media(and therefore the most profitable for the person posting it)? A post/video/meme with something very obviously wrong. Misspelled word, EASILY proved wrong, etc.

Jerry has figured out the team is more profitable when they are bad. His sons are also learning this lesson.

Well, it's official. Schottenheimer it is.

I hereforth declare myself a Buffalo Bills fan. I'm done. Go **** yourself Jerry.

Yeah been a Cowboys fan since I was 9 years old in 1984. I’m done.

I was there in the 1-15 and that didn’t shake me. But the absolute lack of any direction or care by the team gives me no reason to do so either.

I’m out. Sad day.

.... aaaaand they just hired Eberflus as DC.

Clown owner. Clown GM. Clown franchise.
What? Eberflus is an excellent DC hire. Should never be a HC again, but he led some very good defenses, all of which had a lot less talent than Dallas has.

Schottenheimer is an awful hire, fully agree. Why not wait for Kellen Moore? Especially when every other job except New Orleans has been filled. But they at least got DC right.

I've been a fan of rhe Dallas Cowboys since age 7, 1980. I'm no longer a fan of the Dallas Cowboys.
This guy pretty much sums up how I feel and how most Cowboys fans (many now former fans) feel about this decision among many poor decisions by ownership/management.

Agreed

Pretty insane. The guy was completely and totally in over his head as OC with the Jets 15 years ago. I know people improve at stuff, but the idea that he's being hired as head coach of the Dallas freaking cowboys is absolutely insane to me.

Best of luck fellas. Woof

Wasn’t he the OC when they went to back to back AFC championship games?

Did he blow it for them or what? I have no idea

He was.....but the defense (and some VERY good running backs) basically dragged them there. They got there in spite of him, not because of him. 2 or 3 times a year, he was good for an absolutely mind-boggling brain fart of a play call (or an entire half full of them) that would basically lose them the game.

He's a nepo-baby who's been getting chances for 20 years because of who his dad was.

Schottenheimer was a hot commodity in the past. He turned down opps with Miami and Buffalo. Russ had some of his best years with Schotty calling plays. He’s very well respected around the league. I really like the hire.

Hell no to Moore. Leave him in Philly. As far as Deion, I already saw the reaction in here if he would’ve been hired, lol.

Terrible hire.

That said, I don't get how one would just decide to change favorite teams. The way I see it, I had the current and likely future situation, but that's my team and I'm stuck with it.

Yeah. I’m not over the moon about it but I’ll wait and see what happens

ETA: I don’t hate Eberflus at DC

I did it back in 1989. I grew up watching Staubach, Dorsett, etc. & was a huge Cowboys fan growing up….

Then Jerry bought the team & fired Landry the way he did. I’ve hated them since & that feeling will not go away until anyone associated w/ Jerry is no longer remotely close to ownership of the team.

My Eagles friends in our group chat are having a field day :lmao: at the hire and mocking the Cowboys.

I'm not as sure.

Definitely didn’t see that coming a while back and reaction is easy to predict. Will be interesting for sure. Top five offense in 2023. Way more average this year, losing the quarterback. But still ahead of Kansas City.

Plenty of good material for the “Jerry is an imbecile“ crowd. Will be interesting to see.

I go back to the 70s as well, Landry days will always be the golden years for me. Such a stand up guy.

Go look at the stats for Schottenchiemermsers offenses over his career. Almost always top 10
I just read an article that said in 4 of his 12 years as a play caller he finished in the top ten in points.
In 3 of those 12 years he finished in the top half of the league in yards per game.

his best 3 years were with Seattle, so that's 3 of his 4 top ten finishes.
