*** Dan Lambskins Top 25 Most Overrated Movies *** A.K.A MoP Hates Hollywood (1 Viewer)

16 - Edge of Tomorrow

Sci-fi with Tom Cruise and Emily Blount and they keep dying and repeating the day during an alien invasion or something

didn’t care for it at all but I see this one pop up on underrated movie lists a lot when in fact it’s the opposite

What will the American Cheese of movies be?

Find a movie that's only liked in America but is still heavily divisive even here. The components of the movie should be really poorly done, acting, directing, filiming, everything. It should scream mediocre in every sense of the word. And it should be only about an hour in run length, so that it barely qualifies as a movie.
There must be a Beverly Hills 90210 extended length episode that fills this bill, though it would be a bit generous to call it mediocre.

15 - Spider-Man: Into The Spider Verse

I like superheroes. I like animation. This was constantly billed as one of the best Spider-Man movies

It was not

12 - The Blair Witch Project

quite possibly the most overhyped movie of all time

Also largely responsible for the horrible trend that is found footage

Really nothing redeeming about this one

I probably should have had this a few slots higher to be honest
Bingo

10 - The Hurt Locker

One of the worst best picture winners ever. Not sure what the academy (or anyone else) saw in it. Not trying to be a jerk but I feel like Hollywood was just looking for a way to reward a woman and Bigelow and this steaming pile fit the bill

I dont disagree with Blair Witch in hindsight. I saw it when it first hit indie theaters and the marketing campaign made you wonder if it was based on real tapes and that made it very scary at the time. Doesnt really hold up though as well.

I'm not sure what people were expecting with Contact? Actual green aliens or something? That wasn't even the point of the movie.

19 - The Talented Mr Ripley

This one might be a stretch because it’s more for Matt Damon’s acting performance, but IIRC that was the main draw of the film? He was supposed to be able to sound like other people but in the movie when he was trying to imitate them he never did

Been awhile since I’ve seen this one but i remember me and my good buddy always trashing it
doesn't someone have to like it to be overrated?
It's very much loved and respected. Dan is way off on this one. It's sexy and a ton of fun. Great movie.

Best movie about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday was Tombstone, but the worst one that came out at the same time I believe, was with Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid called Wyatt Earp.

8 - Tombstone

covered in Tim’s thread already, but this is another film that was completely overhyped. Outside of Kilmer it’s crap and I have no interest to ever watch it or Kurt Russel’s stupid fake mustache ever again

Also I kept this at 25, I felt like trying to get to 50+ would just lead to me being disingenuous

But to give a little flavor here are some of the ones that didn’t make the final cut

Rudy - while this movie definitely sucks, I just don’t think it’s good enough to be included. Outside of @timschochet snd Notre Dame fans I’m not sure anyone else actually likes it

Boyhood - I get that it was an ambitious project, but again just not sure this one is rated highly enough to include. Complete bore though

Super Troopers - I don’t think I’ve actually seen it, I’ve just heard my friends quote it so often I feel like I have. Ineligible

I Love You, Man - has 2 strikes right off the bat (Jason Segel and Rush). I just don’t think this is good enough to be included

Pineapple Express - only made it through about 30 minutes before I turned it off so ineligible. Maybe I need to get baked and try again but I have a pretty low tolerance for Seth Rogan these days

12 Years A Slave - one of the worst best picture winners, certainly of the 21st century. I think I fell asleep for part of it

Superman - specifically the Christopher Reeves one, but I don’t think I’ve actually ever seen the entire movie. But you could include any incarnation, there has never been a good Superman movie.

Will get started on the top 25 a little later
I disown you

-But I dig the thread title and will still be keeping an eye on it

Rudy is a heckuva lot better than you give it but I had to fight to get into college so it hits home for me
Superman II with Terrence Stamp as Gen Zod is one of the best sequels of all time and some would argue that it's better than the first one.

I'd like to submit English Patient, Oscar nominated film and one of the worst most boring movies I have ever come across
Just about anything in the last 5 years that has actually been nominated and won some awards
That would cover 25 films in a heartbeat because all the movies have been **** and filled with **** ideas.
Oh you're welcome to feel different but look what is going on around you in real life, you know the films have gone in the toilet.

Hasn't been a good movie since Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
That should keep the thread spicy

Cheers Dan, good job

Yep, movie that was underraated and then became overrated.

I agree about the English Patient. I still give my wife grief for making me go see that pile of poo.

I do agree on Animal House, Hurt Locker, Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Tombstone. You are cooking now. EEAO is great too even if Banshees was better.

25 - Halloween

I was born in 79, so growing up in the 80s / 90s I always found Halloween to be a distant 3rd to the Nightmare and Friday series

It’s not a bad movie by any means, but it wouldn’t rate that highly in any personal horror list of mine and others definitely like it way more than I do
Bad start. Halloween is the best of those types of movies IMO. I don't think that movie or the genre is great but I wouldn't put it among the most overrated movies.

But interesting list idea and I'm ready to criticize more :)

23 - Bridesmaids

Women talking dirty and being gross is funny I guess? Im just not a big fan of modern mainstream comedy from that era and i remember being sold that this was one of the funniest movies ever. Its just ok IMO

Totally agree here. Everyone pumped up this movie as better than The Hangover, and it just didn't meet expectations. Funny in parts but overrated.

6 - Tropic Thunder

One of the least funny comedies I have ever seen. Outside of an unrecognizable tom cruise and downy jr doing blackface I can’t remember anything about this

Brutal take. Might as well check yourself into your senior living center right now.

Agree Rudy is terrible.

You are TOTALLY missing out on Super Troopers, though. That movie rules. Its really, really funny.

8 - Tombstone

covered in Tim’s thread already, but this is another film that was completely overhyped. Outside of Kilmer it’s crap and I have no interest to ever watch it or Kurt Russel’s stupid fake mustache ever again
I loath you. “ Why Johnny Ringo, you look like someone just walked over your grave “.

5 - Get Out

sorry, just not a fan. Didn’t think it was all that great on the surface and I’m not a fan of heavy handed social commentary

Hard pass

9 - Animal House

Sorry Boomers, but it’s not funny, at least not to people not yet eligible to collect social security

Might be the most disappointed I have ever been in a movie, for years the olds would tell me how funny this movie was. Then I finally watched it and

While I get the AH influence on the raunch-comedy genre of the 1980's, I'm gonna have to agree here. If I am in the mood for frat-house hijinks, I'm watching PCU over Animal House.

17 - Everything Everywhere All At Once

Counting the trend of terrible movies to win an Oscar . No idea how this got picked over Banshees.
Wow. I loved Everything, and absolutely hated Banshees. I kept waiting for something, anything, to happen in Banshees.
A donkey choked on someone’s fingers what more do you want???
Yeah, not to get too into spoilers but a lot happened. Buildings burned down, people were assaulted, people died.

3 - Mad Max - Fury Road

it’s just driving back and forth in the desert for like 2 hours. With a rock band for some reason. And people love this movie
Sorry but I just don’t get it

4 - Caddyshack

similar to Animal House but even less funny. Maybe if I was old or liked golf? One of the rare movies, especially comedies where the sequel is far superior to the original
I can allow that you think that Caddyshack is overrated.

That said, I cannot allow your follow-up statement to stand. Caddyshack II is an absolute nightmare. Pure trash from any perspective. All credibility you had (which had been dipping) has now sunk to absolute zero.
