Da'Rel Scott (1 Viewer)

The Giants would need to plan the game around Scott's skill set to make him effective. The Giants played the game yesterday to pound the ball and weren't set up for a more finesse attack (flares, screens, pitches) that would have better suited Scott. Unfortunately, the way the O-line played, I wouldn't have held much hope for the finesse approach either.

A source tells NFL Network that the Giants will wait and see how Da'Rel Scott performs Sunday before considering a veteran addition at running back.
It's notable for two reasons. First, it suggests that Scott is ahead of Michael Cox in the battle to back up explosive workhorse David Wilson. Second, it confirms that the Giants don't want to sign a veteran like Jonathan Dwyer or Beanie Wells before Week 1 because they would then have to guarantee their contract for the whole year. Wilson owners looking for a handcuff are trapped in wait-and-see mode. We're skeptical Scott can be anything more than a change-of-pace scatback. Sep 4 - 11:19 AM

From 9/1/11:

Giants seventh-round RB Da'Rel Scott tallied 114 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries against the Patriots in the preseason finale.
The fastest back at this year's Combine broke off a 65-yard TD one week after taking a carry 97 yards to the house. He entered the game in a competition with Andre Brown, who boasted a strong camp, for the final running back spot. The Giants will have to keep Scott because there's no way he makes it through waivers after exploding for 183 yards and two TDs on 14 preseason carries (13.1 YPC).
7/28/11:

Giants agreed to terms with seventh-round RB Da'Rel Scott on a four-year contract.
Scott had high yards-per-carry averages at Maryland and ran a 4.34 at the Combine, but was injury prone. Scouts deemed him to be more of a track athlete than NFL-caliber runner. He'll have his work cut out to make the final 53.
5/1/11:

Giants GM Jerry Reese compares seventh-round RB Da'Rel Scott to a young Willie Parker.
"We took a flyer on the guy because he's big and fast," said Reese. "This late in the draft, you look for redeeming qualities. We're hoping we can catch lightning in the bottle with this guy." If Ahmad Bradshaw is re-signed Scott will likely head to the practice squad as a rookie.
2/27/11:

Maryland RB Da'Rel Scott ran a 4.34 forty at Sunday's NFL Combine, topping all running backs.
Scott continues the recent history of Terps burning up the track at Indy. Merely a late-round prospect, Scott was Maryland's second-leading rusher (708 yards) while notching MVP honors in the Military Bowl after exploding for 200 yards on 13 carries.

I gambled on Cox over Scott... partially because of the KR role (my league rewards return yardage), but also because he seems more like Brown than Scott does. If they're looking to complement Wilson with a between-the-tackles hammer, it would seem to me that Cox fits that mold better.

This is the worst depth I can recall the Giants having in the backfield in quite some time.

I don't in anyway foresee them signing some slow veteran for a veteran presence or some plodding type if they wanted that they'd have kept Torain (who probably remains an option in the curious way cut players do nowadays).

Scott hasn't shown anything more than that he can win a footrace. I imagine they want to see him succeed in-between the tackles like he did in camp.

Cox probably would have been cut and to the PS if not for the Brown injury.

IDK what the deal is with Beanie Wells but not one team has liked him following a tryout. Leon Washington was in NY with a tryout for the Gmen. He could be a megget-ish third down back on occasion but he's an older back that seems more suited for return duties til he retires. If Scott can't hack it, they'll have to find a backup that can give Wilson some rest. I doubt any of these guys are it.

I've heard nothing but good things about cox and from what I've heard he wouldn't have been cut even if brown stayed healthy due to special teams play. Hopefully he gets a shot.

I'm on board with Scott, and have been since grabbing him with a 4th round rookie pick 3 years ago. It should have raised eyebrows when he was kept over FBG darling DJ Ware last year. He's also has been a significant contributor to special teams, which keeps his foot in the door. He had the top 40 time among RBs at the combine in 2011 (4.34) and has shown glimpses in preseason games that he can take it to the house on any given play. Being #26 on a deep dynasty roster, it's a bit tantalizing to think he's an injury away from getting a chance.

Why would you expect his timing with Manning to be down? Downgrade Scott if you want, I'll pick him up. He was running behind Wilson and Brown all pre-season.

I'm not planning on running out and picking up Scott, but it is interesting that in one game he had nearly as many targets as Wilson had in the entire 2012 season. Even if Wilson were to get a hold of the fumbling issue, Scott would stand to be the third down back and quite possibly get goal line carries (assuming another RB is not signed). That might be worth something on a Giants team that looks to be in a lot of shoot-outs.

No he wasn't.

He was running behind Wison, Brown, Cox and Torrain.

Had 10 carries in the 1st preason game and failed miserably. He had 5 carries over the next 3 games (4 after Brown was injured) and was going to be cut if Brown had not gotten injured.

Someone has to go if the Giants bring in a Vterean RB so there is a chance that he will be cut.

Personally, I thought he looked explosive and servicable when he did play.

5 Carries for 23 / 4.6YPC

5 Catches for 51 Yards

74 Total Yards on 10 Carries. Would love to see him get a full game's worth of carries.

Looked like garbage time plays in space that the defense was glad to give up. I'm not sure he could repeat that performance as a starting RB within the confines of the normal game plan.

For the latter amount of the catches, yeah, agreed. But fortunately, Eli Manning plays from behind quite a bit. Still, I like this guy's size and speed combo. Not sure how he'd fair in the RZ but I'd like to see him get a shot.

Da'Rel Scott is one of my favorite RBs in this class but he's a fifth- or sixth-round pick at best. Saw him at the Shrine Game where he was the 2nd best back there behind Delone Carter from Syracuse (another favorite). Scott is a versatile guy, can catch out of the backfield, runs with a good pad level, has good footwork and leg drive. Then saw him at the Senior Bowl as a replacement player and he once again stood out against better competition (Orlando/Shrine wasn't that good this year). Talked to him again at the Combine, where he sat alone at his table. He's focused, dedicated, and ready to prove the doubters wrong. Late round kid with good upside.
Do you think he has a chance to break though in his current situation?

Some of Coughlin's quote were all about giving Wilson chances like he's the prized pony here. There wasn't as much disgust or disappointment as I'd have expected.

No. Scott is a prospect whos overstayed his welcome. Im a die-hard Giants fan and all but I can't be a homer on this one. Talked with a friend of the team yesterday and he beleives Scott/Wilson will split (maybe 60 - 40) in favor of Wilson for most 1st and 2nd downs. Jacobs will fill in on 3rd down to protect Eli.

Stay away from this backfield for a week or so and see how things shake out. You want a flier on the Giants? grab Reuben Randle. Hes one injury away to Cruz/Nicks from being a high upside WR2.

seems like he was holding back then and exploded this morning venting his frustration

I'm emergency starting Scott tonight. Who else is going to run the ball and catch dump-offs, Jacobs?? He's only good for so much.

I'm either starting Da'Rel Scott or Kendall Hunter. It's a PPR League....you guys have any thoughts out there. Hunter is going against Arizona Defense....with Gore Starting....versus Scott [against the Bears] with Jacobs starting. Again...its a PPR League.

Thoughts/Opinions on which guy to take? I know its the worse of 2 evils....
