DE Kalimba Edwards Signs w/ Raiders (1 Viewer)

Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Oakland Raiders have signed free agent DE Kalimba Edwards, formerly of the Lions.

The latest in a string of Raiders' off-season purchases is expected to receive a two-year deal for $5 million. Edwards' six-year career has been notable for its incredible inconsistency. He can look like a potential sack leader one week and be riding the bench a week or two later. For now, he's the favorite to start at right end, ahead of second-year DL Jay Richardson. I still think Oak goes with either Ellis or Dorsey if they are available.
I think Chris Long is still #1 on their list with Dorsey behind him. I do not see this signing as an indication that the Raiders are going to look to draft McFadden, although I certainly do not think it is outside the realm of possibility considering Davis loves speed guys.

I think it's time to come to grips with a few highly probables at the top of this draft......Both C.Long and Dorsey will NOT be available after Pick #3........Of course, Kalimba Edwards is no savior, nobody ever said he was. But what he is is another body to put in the DL rotation, and the terrific Hall/Asomugha/Routt CB trio will allow for more blitzes to be implemented to apply pressure on the QB. G.Warren (who played pretty well last yr when healthy), T.Sands, and Kelly will be called upon to hold up vs the run.......But one thing is for certain, the Raiders need a homerun threat on offense.......and with few early picks in this draft, I just don't see any way that they pass on McFadden, if they keep the pick.........

If giving Kalimba a lousy $5 mill means we aren't going D-line, then what does giving Justin Fargas $12 mill mean?

The Raiders had two DEs on the roster before this move. Now they have three. Maybe. Signing Kalimba doesn't mean a thing.

It means The Raiders will always be the Raiders. 4-12 sounds about right.

Insightful. Shouldn't you be throwing feces at the people tapping on your cage?

:lmao: Edwards prolly isn't the answer for their d-line woes but he gives them a serviceable d-lineman and increases the chance they take dmac.

Insightful. No Fact. Yes. Raiders will have another long season. Question for ya, do you like your Head Coach(Kiffin)? That will be a problem this year. When the Raiders start losing, who will the team turn too. The Raiders are a mess.

I think it means the Raiders Defense looks even better as a sleeper in '08
A sleeper defense based on Edwards? Did you watch the Lions at all last year? He's just another underwelming/overpaid Lions castoff. Veteran depth is all he is.
Until the Raiders prove they can stop the run, I don't think their defense will be really worthy of sleeper status. Either stop the run, or put up a lot of points. Either one would put other teams in a position to the turn the ball over. Otherwise, I don't really see much opportunity for turnovers.

:goodposting: From the looks of it there(Raiders) are going to force other teams too run more. Funny but isn't that there weakness?

:goodposting: I am interested how this will turn out. The way to build a Defense is through the middle, IMO (D Tackle, MLB, SS), and it looks like the Raiders are trying to build their D through the perimeter. I don't see this ending well.

Perception is a funny thing.....what often looks like an obvious situation usually isn't suchPiecing together such a dynamite CB tandem will allow the Raiders to play 8 in the box more frequently, especially for teams that think they are going to just run all day on OAK.......and guess who else has been added....SS Gibril Wilson......who will step up and make the tackles that were too often missed in the past few seasons. For those outsiders who can't (or refuse) to look a little deeper, you'll soon find out that the Raiders will certainly not be anyone's pushovers in '09......Adding McFadden will place the fear back in the opposition that has been sorely lacking......Respect will be due as the Raiders bounce back in '08......How far? Time will tell.....

Edwards will hopefully for the Raiders' sake fill the void left by Chris Clemons who signed with the Iggles...and that's it. As mentioned Edwards is an under-achieving-injury-prone speed rusher, so besides that, he's a good player.

I still don't see them finishing better than Denver or San Diego, but if everything (and I mean everything, falls right, they could get to 6-10.

Might work in theory. Do you have any practical examples? I know that the Broncos have good corners and were not very good against the run. It seems like that the teams that were good stopping the run also had good DTs ie the Vikings, Jags, Baltimore etc.

Gibril Wilson has been the best of the signings in this offseason. It allows Huff to move to his proper position and strengthens defense against both the run and pass.

I would truly like to see Oakland draft in the trenches this year, either side of the ball. Arguing about how horrible they are going to be is foolish at this point. Did anyone watch the Browns last year? Oakland can turn it around quickly, especially if they hit a few licks at DT and OT. I would be thrilled if they made a trade with Minnesota for Bryant McKinnie. The #4 for McKinnie and the Vikings first. It likely won't happen, but.....

Edwards is simply a cheap rotation guy with upside. Last I looked they needed another warm body at the position. But it is funny how little moves frequently pay more dividends than the large and loud moves. Burgess was another injury-prone DE before he got to Oakland.

Agree w/ you Donnybrook. That's why I want Dorsey 1st, J.Long 2nd and Ellis 3rd. Dorsey and Kelly in the middle would be an upgrade in run D but a huge upgrade in pass rush. Burgess is great from the RDE spot and Richardson looked very promising for a LDE (almost SOD for a 5th rounder). I'd love to have Howie's son on the Raiders but he isn't nearly the need that the two DTs are and despite the sour taste left from Gallery, a LT who only gave up one sack in his career (to a CB it was credited) and is regarded as a better run-blocker could really help. Chris may just edge the other 3 in talent (I'd argue that Dorsey is as good or better) but when it's this close, team need says no to Chris or McFadden and we reinforce the trenches.

True.......but last time I checked, the Vikings and Ravens were home for the holidays. ....NO PLAYOFFS....Also, Broncos have shoddy tacklers......their LBs get pushed around very easily.......And the Jags weren't all that great vs the run as they have been in the past.Sometimes, it's more important that you get key stops, not that you have to be ultra-stout vs. the run......Bottom line is....The team that puts the most points on the scoreboard is the team that wins the game. All the speculation about the Raiders run defense is pretty much overblown at this point. For '08, nobody has gained 1 yard vs anybody, so let the games tell the story is what I always say. The difference between success and failure, winning and losing, in the NFL is very small....talent is everywhere, execution is the key.

About a month ago, a Sacramento sports radio station was interviewing a supposed Raiders insider (media guy and I can't recall his name), but he was of the opinion that if Chris Long and Dorsey were already taken, that the Raiders would go Gholston.

Again, somewhat dated information and it's close to four weeks old AND it might be total BS. But, it was his opinion that the team was very high on him.

There's been a ton of people talking about DE, Long or Gholston to the Raiders in the draft and I'm just not getting it. Is there some serious concern w/ Burgess' health, or is Richardson just not as good as he looked to me? T.Kelly can play DE if needed. Maybe the Giants 4 DE dime package? Honestly, J.Long and Ellis make more sense to me than either DE even if Howie 2 is a slightly better looking prospect.

Short answer is: We had zero pass rush from the RE spot. Richardson looked nice-for a 5th round pick. in my mind, the ideal is for him to spell Burgess whenever possible. But the only time we got pressure from the RE spot was when Clemons was in there, as a designated pass rusher.
