DeAngelo Williams has the dreaded "high ankle sprain" (1 Viewer)

from the Rock Hill Herald (by way of Rotowire): WILLIAMS OUT, BACKFIELD SHORT: Rookie running back DeAngelo Williams is listed as out for Sunday's game against Baltimore because of the high ankle sprain he suffered last week.

Panthers coach John Fox refused to specify how long Williams might be out, although other players with similar injuries have missed four weeks or longer. There are those around the team who think he may not return until after the Nov. 5 bye week.

"I don't know all of the intricacies," Fox said. "It's an ankle sprain. Right now he's day-to-day and out for this weekend."

So, if he's out for 4+ weeks, is he worth keeping around? If it's only 4 weeks, he'd miss the next 3 games and the bye week. Of course, most folks probably have him as a handcuff to Foster.

Better off to pick up Chris Perry (especially in a ppr league)? He should be back next week.

i took this kid with my first round pick (rookie and non-keeper draft, so equivalent to a mid 5th rounder) I need him to be my rookie keeper for next year, so wont be dropping him, but im so disapointed. I was hoping that this guy would be puting up RB 3 production behind Alexander and MacGahee by playoff time. Thats not gonna happen now

when I read that he was carted off on Sunday in the game-thread, i got very nervous.. A normal sprain is something most guys hobble off the field with (although it can still hinder them for weeks after that) but to get carted off seemed like a pretty rough way to go.. especially for the kind of back that DeAngelo was in college where he hardly missed any time

 Edited: Sorry, I guess I got confused and thought you were saying Perry is Foster's backup. Anyways, who is the guy to pickup in case Foster goes down? Shelton? Hoover? Goings?

He may not have missed a lot of games, but he got hurt every single season he was in college and missed games, and was also hurt in high school:1999: Sat out four games during his high school sophomore year with a fractured bone in his foot. 2002: Suffered a mild concussion vs. Mississippi (9/05)...Sprained his right knee vs. Louisville (10/08), sitting out the following game vs. Mississippi State. 2003: Suffered a grade III right knee medial collateral ligament tear vs. Cincinnati (11/22), missing the season finale vs. South Florida and the New Orleans Bowl vs. North Texas. 2004: Fractured his right fibula in the GMAC Bowl vs. Bowling Green (12/22). 2005: After a mild left knee sprain suffered vs. Alabama-Birmingham (11/01), he chose to sit out the next game vs. Tennessee. His injury history/durability was one of the knocks on Williams coming out of Memphis. Luckily for him (and Memphis), his major injuries usually occurred at the end of the season, so he didn't miss as many games as he otherwise would have.

good question, texican -- who exactly would be foster's backup? probably goings -- he's done well when called upon the past couple of years when he needed to step in and be a temporary #1 for injury reasons...but he's far from the prototypical #1 -- he's basically a fullback!

shelton would fit the description best...but he's young and untested.

another question would be whether it would be useful to try to guess who foster's backup would be if wiliams were out for a lengthy period, versus picking up another back who might provide points (hence my thoughts about perry, who will get points in a ppr league even if he doesn't start...and would get lots of points if he did start because of an injury).

Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm a huge Panthers homer:Shelton seems to be in the doghouse in Carolina. I'm not sure why, as he reportedly looked good in minicamp and had a good showing in his final preseason game. The best local beat writers in the Charlotte area expect Shelton to be active this weekend, but to get a couple carries at the most.If I were a betting man, I'd bet on Nick Goings once again. He's the darling of the coaching staff because of his versatility, and he's produced before. There is a small chance that Alex Haynes could be called up from the practice squad, as Dan "the concussion master" Morgan is going on IR, but I feel that the extra roster spot will be used on a LB or other defensive player. The Panthers knew they were in trouble at the LB position, and have been auditioning guys on Tuesdays like Sam Cowart, just in case.

Didn't Kevin Jones have a high ankle sprain early in his rookie year when he went on to lead the league in rushing the 2nd half of the season?
