I eat at a diner

Maybe it's just my neighborhood, but it feels like diners are disappearing. There were 5 diners in my neighborhood when I moved here, we're down to 3 and the building of one of those 3 was just sold, it'll prob be gone soon.

Not just here, but it feels like regular diners are disappearing. 

Anyone else notice this trend? I like diners, just got back from one with the fam.

Chicken fingers and french fries are  my primary order in a diner, what's your go to at a diner?

 
I think the decline is due to more people being health conscious. Diners don't offer much in the way of healthy food.

and restaurants are a tough business anyway

 
Have one close to my house we go to about once a month. This place thrives. Plenty of joints like that around here. Nothing like bacon, toast, hash browns, and eggs for $6.00.

I'm in NJ and have no idea about this decline you'd taking about 
I was on Route 9 a little while ago in Central NJ - The PeterPank (nicknamed PeterSpank) which had been there throughout my childhood was closed down. Only place within 5-10 miles open past 2am, was a regular for stoners in the middle of the night. 

 
In Michigan we have a lot of Coney Islands.  Basically a diner but not sure if it's your traditional diner

Used to be once a week or so, now if say maybe once a month or less

 
Why open a diner when you can start a coffee shop/cafe and serve coffee and sandwiches/salads with much higher margins?

I'm from Southern Cali-and I do see this happening. Out here--I think its namely due to a few things. Cost of doing business out here is insane. Insane rents, insane levels of regulation, workers comp, high costs of living, high state tax--plus tons of other things really make running a successful small business in Southern Cali very difficult. Even the small businesses that are successful out here are drowning in discomfort and stress trying to stay above the massive levels of bureaucracy and regulation.    Our small ma and pa coffee shops are turning into Starbucks and Coffee Beans. Our diners are turning into Chipotles and Waba grills.   It's a damn shame in my opinion. The fabric of each community is woven in the small businesses and their owners that give these communities their character.  I go out of my way to patron my local small businesses (including diners) when given the opportunity. I don't go out to eat much--but when I do--give me a local diner or restaurant over any restaurant chain every time.

If this is the criteria then we have one too. Always packed with fast turnover. Rarely necessary anymore, but that hangover cure is batting 1.000.

It's the Michigan version of a diner, same thing really. Just that it definitely serves chili dogs and is probably owned by Greeks. They look to be as popular as ever.

If I miss my diner breakfast on Saturday, I'm a force to be reckoned with.  Diners should serve breakfast, then close the rest of the day. That's their downfall.

 
I used to have to travel with this dope from former job and all he would eat at were diners/ family restaurants..    will never go to one again!

 
Same thing with pizzerias in NY. Good ones are scarcer and scarcer

No. Wrong. More quality pizza joints than ever. But a whole lot less Rays, original Rays, famous Rays, famous original Rays, original famous Rays, etc 

I agree about the diners though. Healthy or quality they ain't. But kinda cheap, and yeah, giant breakfasts. And yeah, disappearing left and right in lower Manhattan... even old timey classics like Kiev or Odessa in the EVil.

We ate early tonight, like 430 - wife had an omelette, kids had pancakes - almost got roped into a breakfast for dinner myself, but stuck with the chicken fingers & french fries - honestly, now I'm craving two eggs over easy, toast, & bacon :kicksrock:

 
One of our favorite places is a diner out in the country, delicious fried stuff.  But then it was shut down for a couple weeks for health code violations.   

I'll happily go back.

I bake, then freeze 3lbs of thick cut bacon at a time just so I can do this in minutes ...ANYTIME I WANT.

Agree on pizza, so many fancy boutique pizzerias popping up everywhere. 

Last two years within 2 blocks of each other, 4 new spots close by my house.

 
A family from NY opened a classic diner here about 15-20 years ago, Marietta Diner. Open 24/7, always packed at peak times, and it's been expanded & renovated several times. It's identical to any quality diner you'd find in NY/NJ -- huge menu, breakfast all day, big case up front with enormous homemade cakes.  They've made a killing and opened 4 other restaurants over the years. Diners are awesome.

 
They will all eventually be replaced in urban areas by Paneras, Chipotles, etc. 

Such garbage - in 25 years the term "breakfast" will be replaced by "brunch" in most cities. Good way to take the simple $7 eggs/bacon/toast and replace it for $29 with eggs/bacon/toast/mimosa

 
My town has a tiny diner on the main road and I took the kids for breakfast on xmas eve morning while my wife did some errands and wrapped gifts. Small place. Maybe 7 tables and 5 counter seats.

2 eggs Sunnyside up w/taylor ham and home fries.

I was surprised the one on 10th Ave in Chelsea closed. Used to go there late night after going out (when not in the mood or energy for Florentine). Wife said it's been closed for years

I don't know that it's unique to diners. In retail anything, it seems like the last 20 years or so has been one continuous process of local/independent getting drummed out of existence by national/international chains.

Love diners. I go for breakfast at dinner. Few eggs over easy on hashbrowns.

If they don't do that go for a meatloaf or a roast beef manhattan if they have it. 

Can't go wrong with chicken noodle soup.

Right, and I'm saying diners are suffering the same fate as all the other local/independent retail type stuff that's getting supplanted by national/international chains. I'm basically agreeing with other people in the thread who have also mentioned this.
