I'm now an old guy but am I correct that there is no distinctive decade since the 80's?? I can reflect to previous decades with their own identification starting with the 80's going back, but the 90's moving forward have zero identification IMO, is this just me or general perception? What do you have to add for each generation?

40's- WW2, greatest generation
50's- happy days vibe, American dream started to be realized, baby boomers boom, foundation of modern way of life started here
60's- the world is being questioned for good cause, Vietnam, equal rights, women's rights, music stands the test of time moving forward starting in the 60's
70's- greatest decade for pop music IMO, TV and pop culture jumps off the map, sexual revolution, last real bond to previous generations IMO
80's- fashion & music still distinctive to the era, still a small thread clinging to the way life was with the previous generations, right or wrong the division from old school thinking and modern sensitive feelings started to change here
90's- grunge, ???
00-'s ??
10's- ??
20's- ??

I would leave off the 90s from your list. It's pretty distinct.

Also, this is going to be highly dependent on when you were born. If you go back further, were there distinct decades in the 1800s? When I look at that century, I think of two things. The Civil War and the Industrial Revolution. Not much else. But I bet if you asked people back then they would disagree.

I asked my niece this once and she says there is a clear cultural distinction for her from the early 2000s and the 2010s.

Also, the internet and social media and how everything is connected probably plays a role.

Even the decades in the 2000s seem distinct to me. The aughts is that weird post 9/11 early internet phase. The teens is post economic crash and rise of social media, 20s are [redacted due to board rules]

I think the tv and movies were generally pretty solid in the 90's

pretty solid? easily the best decade for the arts - music and film were incredible with all the great indie films and alternative rock+hip hop really taking off
It’s amazing how subjective this is, seemingly based entirely on your age and experience. The 80s seems like the best days for TV, movies and music to me but that’s probably 99.9% because a was 4 when the decade started and 14 when it ended. Ghostbusters, Indiana jones, Star Wars, goonies, and others are loved but if made today I’m not sure most of us would enjoy them half as much as 8 year old me did.

We're about the same age

It's crazy to me how little has changed in the last 20-something years and it's just be a constant state of uncertainty ever since, with nothing to distinguish today from decades ago.

It's like 9/11 derailed everything.

I remember, when I was growing up, like in the 1980s, I'd watch a TV show from 10 years previous and it'd look waaaaaaaay out-of-date. Like just the clothing. I'd watch an All in the Family rerun and it wouldn't look anything like the world outside. An old WKRP or Brady Bunch would have stuff nowhere near in style.

In like 1995, watching the X Files then going to an episode of The Jeffersons from 1975, was like peering into ancient history.

Meanwhile, watching an old episode of The Office, today, is the same difference... 20 YEARS OLD... and the clothes still look contemporary. The show still feels accurate to today's world.

Once we left the 90s grunge look, we just went basic and haven't had anything new.

It's more than just clothing but that just seems where it's most noticeable. I know "the world has changed a lot" in the last 20 years but it's kinda hard to see where when looking at stuff 20 years old it's all still the same as today.

Good post. Id at least add the countries westward migration as a 3rd big thing the 1800s. Gold. Better life. For whatever reason, Americas push west was massive and is a pretty significant piece of our histories fabric. Imo
