31.12 The Magnetic Fields, 69 Love Songs (1999)

Absolutely Cuckoo
I Don't Believe in the Sun

The Magnetic Fields are essentially cheeky ******* Stephin Merritt and friends, and the triple album delivers on the title's promise. A bit unwieldy to listen to all at once, and I think it works best in smaller doses, but there's so much goodness to find. The first half of the first disc would be perfect by itself.

I chose precisely the first two songs on the album for the playlist, which I feel offer a glimpse into the whole. "Absolutely Cuckoo" is a perfect, circular 1:30 tune that can get stuck in my head in a flash and I end up singing the whole thing to myself once or multiple times. "I Don't Believe in the Sun", at 4:16, is one of the longer songs on the album, and gorgeous. The Book of Love is doubtlessly the most well-known song on the album and has been covered by numerous artists, and is lovely as well, though I didn't pick it for the playlist.
I've almost picked this one a few times.  Great value for a deserted island....

Definitely would've gone with Cuckoo.  Probably Long Forgotten Fairytale for dos.

ANNOUNCE:  Re-announcing for anyone who doesn't read every post (why???).  KP indicated last night that he won't be able to enter songs into the playlist anymore, so please either (1) enter them your own damn self, or (2) let one of your friendly neighborhood drafters know that they should enter your picks for you.  I am entering Uruk's and can do anyone, but not everyone, else's, too.

Smaller announce:  Please double-check your picks on the spreadsheet now and then.  Right now I notice that we are missing a 24th round pick from Mister CIA on there, and I'm sure we have other mistakes, too.  @Mister CIA, can you help with this one?

Signed,

The Staff
How does one go about getting the keys to the executive features of the Googe doc?  Do I need to PM someone?  I should probably keep reading to see if that is covered.

By the way the 24.04 pick was Nick Cave's The Boatman's Call  :bowtie:   1997

Filled in your 24.04.

Binky will be here in five minutes to say the same.  ;)

Do you know how to fix the missing 27.4 and 27.33 lines in the spreadsheet?  There is a double line where those rows should be.  Fixing that is Desert Island Album Spreadsheeting 202, and I don't have the prereqs.
I believe someone hid the recurring skip rows for OH and Doug B - don't need to see them.

ETA:  I'll fish around, I am pretty familiar with Excel, but not so much googlesheets

Added my last picks to playlist and taking it for a spin..

Sister- white lung

Never heard of them or it but like it, will explore more

Drugs don't work- verve- always liked them and this

I finally got a chance to see the Boss on the last River tour at the Meadowlands, filling a gaping hole, man what a show, nearly 4 hours, would have loved to grab that LP, but I'll be happy with this one still available...

OZOMATLI - OZOMATLI

(1998)

This album really works for me here because it can scratch a lot of different itches.  Salsa, Funk, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Rock all shaken up in a delightful blend with a variety of instrumentation.

Cumbia De Los Muertos

Chota

added to playlist

PICK 31.21

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - CAUGHT IN THE ACT (1975)

I am really struggling with not wanting to lose about 4-5 picks here but I have put this one off as long as I can.  The critics gave these guys a hard time, but these guys are' the definition of "rock and roll."  They have several albums still available that I have owned since my teen years ...but I'll take this one cause it showcases them live, which is where they really shine ...AND I get both of these songs.

This takes me back to cruisin' and hanging out in random fields drinkin' beer, homemade wine, and doin' some doobs.

Songs

- I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home

- We're An American Band

Had I watched this Bob Schneider play live I have do doubt I'd jump up and down and swear he's the best live performer of all time, but all I have are links on the internet. Just to keep things on the up and up, I'm going to burn two picks here on Live at the Paramount, Volume 1 and Volume 2.

29.37 - Live at the Paramount, Volume 1

Bullets  euphemism alert; also, hawt bass player alert    ... better quality audio

Trash

30.04 - Live at the Paramount, Volume 2

40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet) the lyrical delivery is excellent.

Big Blue Sea

Bonus Track (definitely NSFW).  Pretty sure he's spoofing bro country here.

I slept overnight on the sidewalk at the Capital Mall in Olympia, WA when I was 16 to get tickets to this show in 1984.  I was 11th in line.

I went to playlist link in first post and there was an add songs option
Huh. I'm not getting that. I guess I can figure it out. Or not. Either way, I'm not necessarily in it to have people hear what I'm selecting; it's really optional. I'll provide links to the songs should people be interested.

I was using phone app- guessing you're on comp or tablet?

KP made it public.  Make sure you are following the playlist by clicking the   and then an "add songs" option should appear.

I've got 10 more records to go. The last three will probably be jazz. k4 unknowingly reminded me of something my island lacks.
