Broken English - Marianne Faithful (1979)

... more '79 goodness!

Carnaby St. gadabout, the muse for "Wild Horses", chart topper in '64 with "As Tears Go By" ... fell on some very hard times in the early 70s, even being homeless for a spell ... was quite a hellish planet.

career resurrection with a mildly successful '76 release ... but nobody saw this one coming.

producer Mark Miller Mundy pushed Faithful to a more "modern" sound, and the final result was a redemptive smash, sliding the smoky throated chanteuse perfectly into the 1979 soundscape.

it’s a mix of punk and blues and rock and New Wave and Reggae, with a generous amount of synthesizers from Steve Winwood ... but it’s Faithfull’s throaty, cracked voice singing vulnerable songs about sex and heartbreak that led to a Grammy nomination and critical acclaim.

she thrilled me with this one, i'm packing if i'm traveling  🚬

30.34 the Go-Go's Beauty and the Beat 1981

Getting this record and Duran Duran Rio so late makes me very happy.

80's party!!
Some of my friends and I played Our Lips are Sealed in a talent show in high school. It was a disaster. I laughed so hard I thought I'd puke on myself. The audience laughed too, but it was not supposed to be a comedy routine.

ALICE IN CHAINS - DIRT

(1992)

Songs later
damn, i must have listened to this album way more than i even remember.  i've certainly been a huge fan of their sound and would mix in some of their songs, especially the unplugged, into my regular spotify listening.  But i certainly haven't listened to this whole album in maybe 20 years, but i know every song and everything feels totally familiar.  weird.

down in a hole

would?

added to playlist

Boom.   My favorite Chains album.  It’s tough to beat their debut but the songs were crafted better songs and improved their sound.  That sound.   That sound.
yeah, i went with a couple of the more well-known tracks for the playlist, but listening through again, every song is really good.  no skips on the island for that one.

Playing Division Bell now.  I went with my shorter favorites for the playlist, but man, this record is loaded gold.
This reminds me of one of my many blunders.   My brother was  getting tickets to see the Division Bell tour and I told him not to get one for me.   You see, I was even more of an idiot as a young man than I am now.   I wasn’t into Floyd at all but probably didn’t even give them a chance.   It is a great album.   Now I am irritated that I didn’t go to that show,   Ugh.

Just a damn fun album.   There are certain albums that make you smile.  This is music that puts you in a happy place.

32.29 Miles Davis, The Complete Concert: 1964 - My Funny Valentine & Four and More (1965)

My Funny Valentine
Walkin'

(There was a different album I was considering here, but despite thinking it's amazing, the subject matter's so harrowing at times that I'm on the fence over drafting it.)

I need some Miles on my island. This was a concert played in NYC in 1964, and Miles's band was essentially what would come to be known as his Second Great Quintet (with Tony Williams, Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter), except that it featured George Coleman at tenor sax, instead of Wayne Shorter. This would be Coleman's last recording with Miles. They sound absolutely incredible here.

This might be considered a bit of a cheat, because it was originally released as two separate albums, with the slower tunes on My Funny Valentine and the faster ones on Four and More, but they were eventually sold together as a double album, and that was the version I got - another one of my first-ever jazz albums, bought at the 1999 Montreux Jazz Festival when I was there as part of my high school's jazz band, which was there to play in the free, open-air part of the festival (one of the most amazing trips of my life).

Considered not putting "Valentine" on the playlist, given it's uh 15 minutes long, but it's one of the greatest things I've ever heard - the definitive "My Funny Valentine" imo. The faster songs on Four and More are a genuine revelation, and I went with "Walkin'" here, but they're all great.

/jizzy jazz

PS. They're filed as separate albums on Spotify. Added the songs to the playlist.

   Wish I'd thought of this one; could use more estrogen on my island and wore this record out for a couple of years.  "Linger" is my favorite.  I've added all your picks today to Spotify.

@Binky The Doormat  you're amazing at keeping this up today.  I've tried to enter a pick now and then when I could, but it's been a busy busy workday.  Let me know if you need more help.
