Desert Island Album Draft - 15th Anniversary Edition - 50 Rounds in the books, sign up now for KP's listening program (2 Viewers)

Refused - Tannhauser - This was different and interesting enough to keep me into it despite its being 8+ minutes.  I wasn't ready for the screaming a few minutes in.  Not something I will seek out, but I thought it was entertaining and worth listening to.
It isn't for everyone but this takeaway is exactly why I added it. Even if it isn't your wheelhouse I think the music can still be appreciated. Hardcore is typically a bridge too far for me, but this isn't anything like any hardcore I've heard before. On one hand it's too bad this album caused these guys to break up, but on the other hand given how much went into this I can see how it ripped them apart.

Just started the album.  I'm predicting a defeat by submission but we'll see how long I last.

Like the retro album cover.
First song has no obvious verse chorus structure, there have been a bunch of disjointed sections connected by a four chord guitar progression.

Not a criticism, just an observation.

And it ends with a minute of random noises and synths.

Unsolicited advice - start with Tannhauser then go back to the beginning - and no matter what you think stick around through New Noise.

Song 2 - Liberation Frequency

Missed most of it because Mrs. E was talking to me.

Heard the last minute, seemed quieter than track 1.

Song 3 - The Deadly Rhythm

Like this one.  Would be fun to hear live.  I miss finding the edge of the mosh pit.

Song made a pit stop for a quiet part so the next loud part would be louder.

New Noise is three songs away but one is a shorty.  I'll listen to the album through that and do Tannhauser as an encore.

4.  Summerholidays vs.Punkroutine

Strong backbeat on this one.  I like this one too but am not sure whether to root for Summerholidays or Punkroutine.  The quiet/LOUD part was there again but it fit into the song better.

Invoke the spirit of '68, I say. Stay through Protest Song '68

Guitarist is playing a pattern like the Edge during the verse or what passes for a verse.

"We dance to all the wrong songs" is one of the few lyrics to emerge from the soup.  That's pretty cool

On the other hand, I had no idea what he kept screaming at the end of the song.

I owe a couple but am so stressed and distressed that I kinda don't care anymore.  :(   Since there are only five to go for me, I'll go ahead and pick them, but I'm not sure they will be exactly what I wanted if I actually thought more about this.

My mom mentioned to me twice yesterday how happy she had been that we had a chance to see him in concert before he died.  She still cries when she talks about him.

I already have an early-version Cohen on my island but will take a late-model Cohen to supplement.

46.16 - Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker (2016)

His final (non-posthumous) album, released a few weeks before he died, and I love everything about it.  My first song selection below became one of my all-time Cohen favorites.

Leaving the Table

Traveling Light

ANNOUNCE:  I am officially changing my island's name from "Island of Sorrow" to "You Want It Darker Isle."

'The new beat!'

OK, here comes Tannhauser/Derive (with an accent grave).  Oh it's 8 minutes long.

6th grade Eephus played a solo from Wagner's Tannhauser in grade school orchestra.  I got to go out in front during the concert and everything.  I wasn't much bigger than the french horn.

Back to Refused, opens with an electric violin.  Attention fans of Kansas and the Dregs.

quiet part early on at 1:45 but building slowly

Screaming starts at 2:30 but not for long

Mrs. E is probably wondering why I'm blasting this in the back

It's a cool enough song but they're really overdoing the stop start stuff IMO.  It's much like the first song in that it's a bunch of parts.  Can't get the groove going.

Is this Tannhauser or has Derive accent Grave begun yet?

Got real quiet at 6:15, just a low frequency hum

and here comes the bass and a melodica.  I didn't expect a melodica solo.  And the violin is back.

The melodica was the only thing playing at the end.  I liked New Noise better.

OK that's my new schtick. I'll randomize a selection and listen to the album.  It's an album draft right?

I'm going to roll a d6 and shuffle the playlist that many times.

New York Dolls (1973) drafted by @otb_lifer at 6.32

Doesn't sound all that radical in retrospect.  Huge Stones influence obviously.  Johansen is a great frontman; I think I drafted one of his solo songs in some draft here.  The guitars sound great, they're all trebley like on the Bowie Spiders albums.  Did Rundgren produce this?

Johansen's fake Black accent in the intro of Looking for a Kiss wouldn't work today.

Glam has gotten a bit of a raw deal from posterity.  It gets derided as being a fashion scene but there was some great music that came from it.  I don't know if the Dolls' dresses helped or hurt their career.  It certainly drew attention.

Nice transition from Lonely Planet Boy into Frankenstein.  This is a solid side one with no bad songs so far.  Frankenstein sounds a lot like Looking for a Kiss.

Trash is the most Punk sounding song so far.   Cool song but not a lot to it.

Bah.. ####ty Friday afternoon. My last living grandparent is in the hospital. Even if she pulls through the doctors say she isn't going home again. She's 91 so it isn't like she was cheated or anything... but still sucks. Then, I take my 12 year old golden retriever to the vet because he has obviously not been feeling well. Cancer. So, he is on the "last meal" diet of whatever the #### he wants - he earned it - until that last fateful vet visit. Before I even get to inform my wife and son about our dog my mom calls. She went to the ER. Apparently, she had some strange reaction to a bee sting. Leg swelled up, very painful, couldn't walk. She's on crutches and antibiotics now but is having balance issues and has tumbled a few times...don't know what the hell to make of that. The doctors asked if she has had MERSA before... not sure where that line of questioning leads but it definitely doesn't sound good. Here's to a better weekend.

Unfortunately, only a 4 song EP:

Round 27) Drugstore Heaven - Houses or Dawn Golden & Houses (no idea how Spotify lists it) (2018)

Fast Talk

Left Alone
Well, RIP my dog. Had to put him to sleep today. A vet came to the house and performed the procedure outside. COVID19 makes the grieving/comforting part kind of awkward I'll tell you that for free. My 7 year old did a google search this morning of "pets that live a long time and are not noisey[sic]"  - it came up with finches and canaries... ffs. finches... canaries... He was doing OK until the vet confirmed the heart stopped. Then the finality set in. My wife was adamant we weren't getting another dog... but, it looks like once we finally rip out our carpet and replace with hardwood, we are getting a new dog.

What is the lead "singer" so angry about?

I need some funk and more importantly I need some female representation on my island - and I’m going with one of the baddest funk divas there is. This is mainly a live double album, with three sides featuring all their best songs live, but one side of all new studio recordings, one of which is my jam that I’m gladly taking for the playlist. Yo Mama selects:

47.19 - Rufus and Chaka Khan - Stompin’ at the Savoy Live (1983)

Side One

1 - You Got the Love

2 - Once You Get Started

3 - Dance Wit Me

4 - Sweet Thing 😍

Side Two

5 - Tell Me Something Good 😎

6 - Stop on By

7 - Pack'd My Bags

8 - I'm a Woman (I'm a Backbone) 🥰

9 - At Midnight (My Love Will Lift You Up)

Side Three

10 - Ain't That Peculiar

11 - Stay

12 - What Cha' Gonna Do for Me 🎶

13 - Do You Love What You Feel

Side Four (new studio recordings)

14 - Ain't Nobody

15 - One Million Kisses

16 - Try a Little Understanding

17 - Don't Go to Strangers

Oh well, side 2 actually began with Trash.  Rundgren did produce the record.  He was 25 at the time.  It sounds terrific--the drums are buried in the mix by modern standards but not for 1973.

Bad Girl - Is this still Johansen singing at the beginning?  His voice sounds shot by comparison.

Subway Train - I guess it's Johnny Thunders in the right channel and Sylvain in the left.  Johansen included a song very similiar to this on one of his solo albums but I can't remember which one.  Any song that ends on someone's in the kitchen with Dinah is alright by me.

Pills - Harp solo to open.  This one has the bad sounding Johansen voice too.  I got the rock n roll nurse and she's making it worse.

Two more songs

Private World - It's got that Louie Louie beat.  Good Johansen voice is back.  Not a great song though, never went anywhere.

Jet Boy - Not many post 1990 albums would put a song this good at the very end of an album.  This song started off hot and turned it up higher around 1:10 with dual guitar freak out mode.  Should have mentioned before that The two guitars on this album have been great-really wide separation too.   Big finish worked well.

Sorry to hear this - that’s tough for everyone, especially for the kids

I'm so sorry.  That's a tough thing for a kid.

Our dog died just before shutdown.  It's taken three months but I think we're ready for another pet.

Rolled a 5 this time

1. System of a Down - thank God

2. CSN

3.Tori Amos

4. The Jam - All Mod Cons

and here we go...

5. Soundgarden -Down on the Upside (1996)

Cool.  I don't think I've ever heard this album before.  I like Soundgarden and was really into Louder Than Love when it came out but then we had kids and everything changed.

It's 65 minutes long.  I'm going for a walk and should be back before the album is over.  Impressions will be short but hopefully better organized.

Try Jack Vanessa Del Rio to disguise it.
zam, did you happen to watch the two part documentary called Laurel Canyon on EPIX? The last one was on Sunday night. If you didn't see it it was about the music scene in Laurel Canyon in the mid 60s to mid 70s. It was interesting. I never even heard of the channel until Laurel Canyon was advertised. There is an EPIX on demand where you can watch both episodes, which are about an hour 20 minutes long.

I recorded the first part, but haven’t watched yet. Have to check to see if I set it up the second. Looking forward to it.

I was thinking something similar for those reasons.  At the very least, do an am song shuffle then in the PM doing a full album of something.

So sorry @rcam

I'll just chime in to say we lost our dog at the start of October. We got another dog mid-November and she has been wonderful to have around. She's a rescue, so the training and walks and kind of mandatory time needed to spend with her helped fill the void. We have another dog as well, so it was super weird going for walks etc with only one of us holding a leash.

We're still so sad about the dog we lost though. My family has a cottage and for the ten years we had Abbey we went up basically every summer weekend. They're all retrievers and she was such a swimmer, she'd spend hours on end in the water. We've kind of realized in retrospect we largely went for her. We haven't been able to bring ourselves to go up there yet this year without her. Our plan was always to spread her ashes up there but I don't know. We got her as a puppy before we were married and we don't have kids so she was our baby.

Anyway, that got sad and off course but the point is the new girl we adopted has brought us so much love and joy, she's amazing and as hard as it is not having Abbey, she helps to ease the pain. (And if you can, consider rescuing).

I was thinking because there's been so much emphasis on the playlist, once we finish round 50 we should probably do another 50 rounds of songs to keep adding to the playlist - with anything from an album taken in this draft off limits of course.

I think I'm joking...

that's a pretty good idea

Is that the one with Jakob Dylan?

48.25  Oscar Peterson - Night Train (1963)

I don't own a lot of jazz--probably 20-30 albums.  I own several of the albums drafted so far but I don't listen to them very often. I'm enjoying the songs when they come up in the shuffle.

The local public radio station has a late night jazz show that I tune into from time to time.  I heard something from this album for the first time on this show 15-ish years ago and loved it. It's still a favorite.  One of the few I've sought out on vinyl.  I need to make a point to listen to more jazz because I like a lot of it when I do.

I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good

Hymn to Freedom

I’ll have to check that one out
