Beach Boys - You Still Believe in Me i might be a cretin but even though this is on like every best album list I'm unfamiliar with this album. This isn't surfs up Doo *** pop tho. It's actually really, really good. Wow. Was the pre Brian Wilson staying in bed or post? 9.45/10

Lord Huron - Meet Me in the Woods i like the opening. Feels like this is like if the boss fronted a modern-day band. This is quite good. Layered singing on the chorus(!). No, really, this is good. 8.675309/10

The Cure - Fascination Street I only know the big stuff from these guys. First impression, this goes slightly harder than their big stuff. There's that familiar guitar riff I know from the cure. Bass player is carrying this thing right now. Not enough bass-driven tracks out there. Streaming consciousness til the vocals......running out of thoughts.......ok there they are. Shuffle on a pretty decent streak right now. I like this better than their big hits. Drums are now doing the heavy lifting. Rhythm section killing it here. Vocals back again and yeah this song kicks ###. 8.79er/10

Iron and wine - House by the Sea vaguely familiar with these guys. Made a mental note to dig deeper in their stuff years ago. Must've misplaced that mental not cuz it never happened. The music is really good. Not a big fan of the vocals. But man the music is good. Is that a didjeridooooooo? I think it is. Not enough didjeridooooooo in music. Solo is on point. Shuffle been good tonight. Making mental note to dig deeper in this. Mental not to try to to lose this mental note. The instrumentals on this are fantastic. Somewhere between 8.675309 and 8.79er

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoff's - Monday Monday hey, I like Matthew Sweet. Of wtf this is some hippie stuff. Oh no, I know this song. Who likes Mondays this much? Ugh Somewhere below 3/10.

44.35 Cello Suites, J. S. Bach, Yo Yo Ma

I didnt listen to classical music all that much until i retired. One of the things that got me deeply into it was a series of videos Yo Yo Ma made based on six collaborations with artists in other mediums inspired by each of Bach's Cello Suites. I can only find these two on youtube, but they were all fascinating. Here's the wiki on it 

DVD Volume 1 - Suite #1- The Music Garden, directed by Kevin McMahon. After explaining how the first Cello Suite always conjures up images of nature, Yo-Yo Ma recruits architect Julie Moir Messervy to help him try and design a garden based on the suite. The Music Garden is pitched to Boston City Hall, showing interest in the project for City Hall Plaza as a way to beautifully meet the demands for security. But the demands the film places on the completion of the project turn out to unreasonable for Boston and they pull out of the project. The city of Toronto expresses interest in the project once Boston steps out and over the remainder of the film Yo-Yo and Julie work to get the project to the point where actual construction of the Garden can begin.[1]

DVD Volume 1 - Suite #2- The Sound of the Carceri, directed by François Girard. Yo-Yo Ma brings the music of the Second Suite together with the etchings of the 18th century Italian architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi in this film. Working out of the church that Piranesi built, Yo-Yo with his sound engineer constructs a reverberant rendition of the Second Suite to fit the computer designed three-dimensional version of Piranesi's Carceri d'invenzione (Prisons of the Imagination) that Girard constructs to have Yo-Yo play in over the course of the film. The film explores the connection that music and architecture share as architects and a music historian contribute to the discussion between the performances of the movements.

DVD Volume 2 - Suite #3- Falling Down Stairs, directed by Barbara Willis Sweete. Yo-Yo Ma collaborates with Mark Morris to create a dance for the Third Suite. The film opens with Morris expressing reservation about interpreting the work as choreographer, which he feels is less than the interpretation of a musical performer like Yo-Yo. Yo-Yo assure Morris that his interpretation is valid. Over the course the film Morris works with his troupe and then with Yo-Yo to create a dance. The title, as Morris explains, comes from a dream he had where he saw one of his dancers falling down a flight of stairs in time with the opening scale of the Suite.

DVD Volume 2 - Suite #4- Sarabande, directed by Atom Egoyan. A drama movie featuring Yo-Yo Ma, Egoyan's wife Arsinée Khanjian and Fame star Lori Singer. Perhaps the most enigmatic of the films in the series, Sarabande, as Egoyan explains in his interview for the series, came out his meeting Yo-Yo to begin working on the film. Egoyan came to realize the relation that he and Yo-Yo had as listener and performer when Yo-Yo played for him. The film explores the relationships that a limousine driver, a doctor, and a real estate agent have amongst each other and with Yo-Yo as he travels to Canada to perform the Suites.

DVD Volume 3 - Suite #5- Struggle for Hope, directed by Niv Fichman. Yo-Yo travels to Japan to work with "his favorite Kabuki actor" Bandō Tamasaburō to choreograph a dance for the Fifth Suite. The process is not always easy as Bandō finds himself struggling to express emotion while keeping up with the tempo of the suite, especially in the Allemande movement. However, with guidance from Yo-Yo, the completed piece is an exquisite work that takes the viewer through a range of emotions from lamenting to denial and dreaming all through the movements and gestures of a master Kabuki actor and the playing of Yo-Yo Ma.

DVD Volume 3 - Suite #6- Six Gestures, directed by Patricia Rozema. Rozema and Yo-Yo explore the life of Bach when he wrote the Cello Suites with the help of ice dancers Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean as well as Tom McCamus, who plays Bach. Each of the movements of the Suite is equated to a gesture. The movements begin with McCamus as Bach narrating events in his life, setting the stage for Torvill and Dean to portray the particular gesture involved on ice. Over the course of the film we see Bach encounter joy at having the freedom to do "music for music's sake", question whether he is growing more isolated from the world-at-large, suffer the waning attentions of his patron, and grieve the loss of a wife.

So cool.  I'd never heard of this.  I really hoped the above would be one you'd found, since this is one of my favorite directors.  I'm going to watch the other two, though.

Yo-Yo Ma from all accounts appears to be an amazing human as well as musician, so I love this even more.

 
I just remembered a record I meant to take in the single digit rounds and forgot.  IT'S STILL AVAILABLE.  Hopefully I can get it tomorrow.  And don't forget again.

 
I was so into Styx that I had cut out any mention of them in any magazine and taped it on my bedroom walls and door.  I recall now that I had a quote from Tommy Shaw (who was ####### dreamy) that at the time I had no idea what it meant.  He was complaining about a show in Cleveland or some such and said something along the lines of, "We couldn't get laid there if we were in a women's prison with a handful of pardons."  Yes, my mom let me have this on my wall as a pre-teen.  She probably just didn't want to explain to me what it actually meant.

My Bloody Valentine - When You Sleep iirc this one went pretty late. These guys wrote the shoegaze book, yeah? Highly influential album. Good song selection. 9.6 or 9.7 depending on which way you round/10

D'Angelo - Playa Playa  :wub: :wub: I took this one. Dat bassline, those horns. So smooth 9.89 because I had a 10 cent off coupon/10

John Mayalls & the Bluesbreakers - Little Girl - Mono almost every blues song sounds the same. Pretty sure Chuck berry wrote this tune decades ago. Also the fact that I have 2 hyphens in the bolded part of this segment bugs me. a bluesy 4.42/10

I bought this cd the day it came out and I think this was my favorite cut off it for a while. Zack de la Rocha always goes hard af. I gave up after awhile. Didn’t even know they put out the stuff they mentioned. Not a big fan, but there are three songs I really like: Suite Madame Blue, Miss America and Crystal Ball.

Crystal Ball is one of my favorites, too.  (I like the other two as well.)  I hadn't heard of a bunch of stuff relating to those questions, including some of the later members I guess they brought in.

Derek and the Dominoes - Why Does Love Got to be So Sad? answer: It doesn't, Derek, if that's your real name. Clapton never gripped me but this is kinda harder than what I'm used to and the geeetar solo is good. Still, it's Clapton and it overstays its tepid welcome so a bluesy 5 or 6.oh I don't know/10

Billy Idol - Rock the Cradle of Love should've waited to refill my drink til now [insert lip curl]. Actually not a turrible song. Thanks for not taking monie monie or locamotion. I never realized how kinda by the book this song is. Even the breakdown. Probably because i was a child when it was released. A sleepy 5.80sish/10

Sandro Perry - Changes 7.5 minutes...settling in and crossing fingers. 4 minutes in and the song found its legs, ok here we go. Keep the singer off the mic and keep on with the instrumentals and I'm in. Whoa heck yeah the singer really stepped aside and it was a weird 3.5 minute outro. Kick ###. 7.1/10

The Smithereens - Room Without a View theres a theory that if a person listens to a song a certain amount of time they will likely develop an affinity for it (pretty sure modern pop music is excluded from this). Couple weeks ago these guys were an anonymous early 90sish sounding band. I be nodding my head to them lately...hmmmm 6.charley Steiner from sports center/10

Massive Attack - Inertia Creeps me gusta El trip hop. Sounds like another didjeridooooooo hmm what are the odds. I know this song. My favourite massive attack song is still on the board but the album itself is kinda weak so it might stay on the board. Lol yeah that's a didjeridooooooo. Not enough didjeridooooooo in music. Vocalist isn't doing it even tho the didjeridooooooo is doing its best to carry this thing. 7.kinda sounds like early tool/10

45.08 Freedom Highway - Rhiannon Giddens (2017)

This is a harrowing album and I can't often listen to it front-to-back. Giddens wrote or co-wrote 9 of the 12 songs. I can't think of another artist working today who understands and encompasses American rural music - blues, folk, country, gospel, blue grass - in all of its forms more than she does. She reminds me a lot of Rosanne Cash in that way. I want this LP on my island to smack me upside the head when I'm listening to too much of the silly stuff I've drafted.

"Better Get It Right The First Time"

"Freedom Highway" This is one of the few she didn't write. Pops Staples did and it's a Staples Singers classic.

44.16 - Dan Bern - Dan Bern (1997)

This was a guy I first saw play during The Chicago Years, and I was puzzling today over why he never became huge, and then I read his Wiki page and realized he's done a'ight; he's just been doing interesting stuff I didn't know about, expanding his realm.

"In early 2007, Bern's Breathe won in The 6th Annual Independent Music Awards for Best Folk/Singer-Songwriter Album.[

In 2009, 2010 and 2012, Bern played with Common Rotation from Los Angeles, California which consists of vocals, guitar, banjo, trumpet, saxophone, and other instruments. Their concert in September 2009 at the M Bar in Los Angeles, was released as a live album in the spring of 2010 called "Live in Los Angeles" with about half the songs Bern playing solo and the other half including Common Rotation.

Bern's songwriting skills were used in the biopic parody film Walk Hard where he helped write 16 songs for the movie. Many of these songs made the theatrical cut of the film including the Dylanesque "Royal Jelly," and the melodic "(Have You Heard the News) Dewey Cox Died." He continues to write songs for films, including Get Him to the Greek and Father's Day. Bern’s song "One Dance" was also included in Kasdan's first film Zero Effect. Bern wrote "Swing Set," a duet with Emmylou Harris, for the off Broadway production of Family Week directed by Jonathan Demme, and wrote the title song for Demme's documentary Jimmy Carter Man From Plains.

In 2012, Bern released two studio recordings of American roots music: Drifter, featuring a duet with Emmylou Harris, and Doubleheader, an 18-song tribute to baseball culled from close to 30 years of songwriting and recorded at Bob Weir’s TRI Studios in Marin County."

Anyway, his music is heavily influenced by Dylan in an obvious way, and his lyrics are SO ####### GOOD.  I'm doing a swing through this record now to choose my songs, though I kinda know what I'm taking, just marveling again at how good they are.

I'll put this record as my answer to KP's Question #3, the record I wish people would listen to.

very nice, I've seen Dan Bern a few times, haven't stayed current, but love pete rose, marilyn monroe, tiger woods, jerusaelm etc... great pick!

 
I've seen Luka few times and he was a furious live performer on the electric acoustic, but that style of play led to hand surgery and he had to change up his style to a more spanish string.  I love his first 4 records and will go with this one which has my wedding song on there, (the Elvis cover) and when my wife and I traveled to Ireland in '96 many of these songs were rolling around my head.. great memories to take with me to the Island... I Need Love is an LL Cool J cover

Mine’s the one with the clever camera trickery in the music video to show different scenes in an apartment building.

Kinda feel like spotlighting is/should be fine at this point in the draft or whatever. More than 40 rounds in.
