Looks like we are at 16.    Maybe let the dust settle, finalize picks, see if others want to join, and then I randomize stuff on Thursday night? 

 
Just finished my 2nd listen of Sound and Fury, this time on a speaker and not my phone.

Really like the instramental opening that leads into Remember to Breathe which is also a great track.  8/10

Sing Along. /. A Good Look - solid but not spectacular 6/10

Make Art not Friends- a quiet rocker with some interesting electronic effects. 7/10

Best Clockmaker on Mars- another rocker and 1 of my favs. Reminds me of something Clutch would do. 8/10

All Said and Done- the closest thing to country on this album but more a bluesy ballad.  Like this alot too 8/10

Last Man Standing- short throw away rocker that's really the only bad song here. 5/10

Mercury in Retrograde- another slower song in the country/rock mix. It kind of reminds me of Jimmy Buffet for some reason. 7/10

Fastest Horse in Town- another great song with a rock/blues sound. About 2x longer than anything else on the album but I like it alot and it's a great closer  8/10

This is only the 2nd "country" album I've ever listened to on purpose and glad I did. Even the lows are above average and it has a cool unique sound 7.5/10

Long White Line started up as I'm writing this and that's way to country for me or probably KP.

JEMINI THE GIFTED ONE & DANGER MOUSE - GHETTO POP LIFE

Been sorta circling this one for a while, as it was always an album that I found intriguing for its production and lyricism.  Was always confused why Jemini never did anything else.  Finally googled it today, where they claim to have "solved it" though frankly I am more confused than ever.

The Hip Hop artist Jemini aka Jemini The Gifted One aka Jemini The Funk Soul Sensation, is indisputably one of Hip Hop’s greatest talents. He released singles and an EP throughout the 90s, however his big entrance came in 2003 when he teamed up with super-producer DangerMouse, note, this was before DangerMouse would attain worldwide stardom as one half of Gnarls Barkley together with Cee-Lo Green. The album ‘Ghetto Pop Life’ was released via Lex Records and featured J-Zone, Prince Po, The Alkaholiks and others.

Aside from the unique style, awesome production and cohesiveness of this project, one of the most fascinating aspects is that what from a first glance would be just another dope underground Hip Hop LP (not easy in itself of course), managed to grab the ear and attention of the english and international media’s upper echelon, the success was groundbreaking. So what happened next ?

Well… nothing. Or so it would first seem, for Jemini at least. Whilst we saw DangerMouse go onto release his acclaimed ‘Grey Album’ mix, then slowly take over the music world with Cee-Lo, we heard nothing from Jemini. It was confusing, Jemini had a style like no one else, the album was a hit, the fanbase was solid, but over 10 years would go by with one question on every fans mind, where is Jemini ?

Accordingly, those who were close to Jemini were probably aware, but for us distant fans scattered around the globe, we had no idea. So let’s stop dithering and get to the point, we recently came across a YouTube video that was uploaded in November 2013 and the time of writing has 81 views and simply titled ‘Big City’. Why ? Jemini has changed his name, we and pretty much nobody one else it would seem had any idea. The video reveals that Jemini for one reason or another landed himself up in prison sometime after the release of ‘Ghetto Pop Life’, this can probably explain the Jemini silence.

So to clarify, Jemini is now going by the name ‘Big City’.

We then learn something interesting, Jemini or Big City is currently shopping around a documentary film entitled ‘Mice & Men’, the story and making of ‘Ghetto Pop Life’ to be released soon !? If true it would be a long-awaited treat for DM & Jemini fans, but will it happen ? For those who may recall it was some years ago now we heard that Jemini was planning to release a similar documentary entitled ‘Memoirs Of An MC’, the film was never released. We can only hope this one is.

So what now ? Well, a possible release of ‘Mice & Men’, talks of new music and more. Does a change of name mean a change of style ? DangerMouse reunion ? New LP ?

Alright, I have the day off so I was going to try to tackle a couple of these albums.  Been trying to work out a tad more because I am feeling my age, so I popped on the Greta Van Fleet album while I biked this morning.  Mostly because it looked the shortest.  LOL.  

GRETA VAN FLEET - FROM THE FIRES (2017)

Cover:  Again, I dig the cover.   Seem like once again evoking a little bit of some occult/metal imagery.  

Album:   Yeah, yeah - I get the grumbles about it being a Zep cover band.  In the end, I usually don't care about that and just care if I like the music or not.  I mean, what would we have left if we didn't listen to anything that took the sound from other artists?  I see the voice comparisons, but for me they definitely get in enough Skynrd/Black Crowes type sound that takes them away from being a full on Zep comparison to me.   Ironically, one of my least favorite songs on the album was Flower Power, and for me that was the closest Zep song they had on there - it sounded like something from LZ III/LZ IV era maybe?    Besides that, I really liked pretty much everything else on here and thought the album (I guess EP?) was a damn good way to start the day.    Songs 1, 2, 5, 7, and 8 were all top notch rockers.   It shouldn't surprise me that 2 were covers because they did seem to stick out a bit from the rest of the song and didn't fit quite as well - still liked all of them though.   

I am probably going to try something similar to my movie ratings which would put this as something like a 7 or 8/10.   An 8 out 10 would be in the "best of the year" category, and I am not sure what else came out around then and if it would land on there.   Like I said before, this is one of my favorite things I was introduced to so far in this draft.

That's probably my least favorite on the EP as well. It isn't an outright skip, but I don't seem to pay attention when it comes on. The opener, Safari, was by far their best one to experience in concert. And I'm in lockstep with 4 of your 5 high points - I don't lump Talk On The Street (7) in with the others, but those are the top tiers. And what got me into them in the first place. Glad you enjoyed it  :headbang:

We are basically in sync with this.  I think 7 is "worst" of the 5, but I just lumped those 5 together because they were a bit above the others.

Going back to this earlier post just to note that being super into video games all my life, I wish I could've gotten some game music on my island. Alas, it's not something we typically consume in album format, but there are so many game songs that bring me joy or move me immediately when I hear them. There were multiple game drafts in the FFA, but I don't know if there was ever a game music one. I'll try to come up with a list of some of my favorites, though mine'll be pretty different from Tasker's 'cause I wasn't a Nintendo kid.

I was thinking about this as I stare at metal albums, that I don't think people will like at all, so I skipped over them.  

2.  Those who drafted live albums - and be honest now - what % was preferring those versions of the songs to the albums and what % was a "more bang for your buck" approach?  

If there were decent full Radiohead concerts on Spotify, I would have gone that route because like I've said before - I prefer the sound of songs from KidA especially in the live form.   There have been a couple live songs pop up that I thought sounded kind of bad, so that got me thinking about this as well.

1. I scaled way back on jazz records and song lengths once i saw the effect on shuffles. I took the desert island aspect very seriously, so there are no records in my stash for the purposes of impressizing or edumecating anyone. If the artist was obscure or old, i skewed my playlist songs slightly to give novices the fullest possible picture of what they were about.

2. I took a few live albums, but never to dogpile hits and was disappointed by the amount of that which went on. I took Peter Gabriel Plays Live because it is where his post-Genesis sound came together (using what he calls "electronic skiffle" to bring world rhythms and ambient sounds into his mixes) and influenced the making of all subsequent albums; Joni Mitchell's Shadows & Light because her band (Metheny, Pastorius, Mays, Brecker Elias) was so amazing for a chickie folksinger; Tom Waits' Nighthawks at the Diner because it was from a phase where his patter was as much a part of the performance as the songs; and Genesis Live, because my very first exposure to them happened to be at their first-ever American concert and the set lists were similar. U2's Under a Blood Red Sky was a small cheat but also iconic on its own

50.35 Handel, Suites for Keyboard, Keith Jarrett

I was going to make my last pick what i consider the greatest musical achievement of my lifetime - Sondheim's score of Sweeney Todd - but i was deeply moved by Bonnie Pointer's death and decided to take the revelation that was the Pointer Sisters jazzy, snazzy first album as my last popular record and the mix is better for it.

So i'm down to a boring piano sonata record as my capper. No matter all the rockin' i done, i will always have a greater orientation toward keyboard-written songs over guitar-written. They usually seem more clever, intricate and finished. So i complete my Desert Island stash with our greatest living jazz pianist doing excellent service upon the work of a classical master.

Besides Sweeney Todd, my hardest leave-offs were Procol Harum's Broken Barricades, Gato Barbieri's Last Tango in Paris, Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething, Fleetwood Mac's Then Play On, Thomas Dolby's Golden Age of Wireless, Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson's Winter in America and Sufjan Stevens' Age of Adz

I had a very difficult time with this one because my favorite OAR song is on the follow-up and as much as I enjoy them live three of their weakest cuts on their live album are that song and the two above. So I'm reluctantly going with their debut in the studio. And for those that are only familiar with major label OAR, I share your disdain for them. I've chosen to only remember them for their indie label days.

Sex Type Thing - swing version, this is why it must be the super deluxe version. I can take or leave the studio version. But I LOVE this rendition of it.

Honorable Mention: Local H - As Good As Dead, Sevendust - Animosity, and something by a Corey Taylor group. Painful going to the islands without any, but every single one of his pieces of work just has too many skips.
