Yes, Ohio, early 90s.

I somehow kept ending up with one of the most attractive girls in the class as my partner. Poor girl.

Wha???

YES.  Suburbs of Louisville, KY; elementary school in the 70s.  No idea why that pic is in B&W, but a friend posted it on FB a year or so ago and I thought of it when seeing this thread.  Yes, I'm in there.   :)
I stand stupid...

Thnx, K.

OK, lemme guess - you the blond with - what looks like - 3 pony tails -----mid/upper left - back to camera - and maybe, standin' on yer skirt?

Geeze though, how did I miss this?

75-83 here - I was just too square for all this I 'magine.

Girl middle left completely ignoring her partner (ongoing life theme!), with curly hair and curly ribbon in her hair, taller than others, one layer back from cute pig-tailed girl (Darla!) in front left trying to woo her partner.

I was less than 1 foot off...

👍

And - way to be so aloof - guys always loves that;)

I think it actually did come from the newspaper.  Because in the suburbs of Louisville, KY in the 70s, six-year-olds square dancing was a major story.
Tell me bout it!

I got covered in the 90's - Saturday Scene section/when it was around - for bein' in a Fitness Factory - major story as well.

I’m just glad it wasn’t this...which is what comes to mind when I see “Kentucky square dancing”

Yes, Yuba City, CA (45 minutes North of Sacramento)

Late 70's/Early 80's

Yes, suburban western NY public middle and high school in the 90s.

No, north central New Mexico 80s.

Bet they did in southern NM though.  Culturally, New Mexico is like two different states joined together.

Yes in middle school in Michigan. We were having our first dance and for some reason we all were taught a few line dances so we could do them at the dance. They also taught us some other group dances like The Time Warp.
Same, mid 80s, Detroit area.

I recall we had to pick our partners, but the fear of being last picked was exponentially more stressful than it was for any sport. You never wanted to be an unpaired leftover that the PE teacher had to find a partner for. It was perfectly designed  to psychologically torture 13 year olds in front of their peers. This was done every day. I enjoyed PE every day from elementary school through senior year EXCEPT for this one chapter.

I learned ballroom dancing in school as part of an etiquette class (actual covering your hand w a hankie before putting it on a girl's hip & stuff - my Mary was floored that i could foxtrot, i know that) but i'm pretty sure i learned square dancing in Scouts for a thing w the Girl Scouts (or maybe earlier - Cubs v Brownies). It was before the war so.....

Michigan. Middle school in the mid/late 80’s. I believe it took place in gym class.

Yes, North Carolina, 70's. My grandparents on my dad's side loved to square dance. They would take buses with other senior dancers, and go to square dancing conventions. It kept them in good shape, but high blood pressure caused both of them to die of massive strokes in their mid-80s. I imagine they are dosey doeing up in heaven.

I am genuinely shocked that there are over 130 responses to this poll. And the best range of info I’ve ever gotten to this question.  I should have done this years ago.

You've all made an old man very happy.

Other than someone who didn't remember that they answered yes to the first question by the time they got to questions 2 and 3?

:lmao:

Not in elementary or middle school, but yes while that age.

My family (parents, aunt/uncle, grandparents) were all members of a Square Dance club.  Once a month everyone packed up and hit a different campground in South Carolina for the weekend.  It was here I learned to square dance.  My partner during this process?  Yep, my cousin.

My parents only did this for about a year.  My grandparents and aunt/uncle kept going for years.  My uncle passed away last year, in his early 80s, and was still calling Round Dancing.

Was just talking to the soccer team parents about this on Saturday.  80's here, California.  Learned to square dance in 5th grade.
