RB Laurence Maroney was back at practice today for the first time since the Redskins game. He wore a brace on his left knee and ran without a limp, though he did seem to be stretching it out quite a bit. So maybe, contradictory to the earlier report, he isn’t quite on the shelf yet.

Pats might still hold him out this weekend since they may be able to hang with the Bills without him. Keep an eye on that injury report on Wednesday. My guess is that Maroney will be listed as questionable (knowing Belichick).

ESPN reports that Patriots rookie RB Laurence Maroney (knee) is out for the Patriots' Week 1 game vs. Buffalo. Maroney hurt the knee in the team's third preseason game, but it is not believed that he will be out for an extended period of time. Expect Corey Dillon to be the primary ball carrier for New England vs. the Bills.

Yet people say Shanahan plays games. You can almost never trust an injured Pats player.

Local radio in Boston claimed Maroney will miss week one due to his injury. I have no idea how they know this. Perhaps, they are just picking up already published reports. As a Maroney owner I hope he is ok.

Actually, last year the Pats were right about on average for injured players playing. The leaguewide play rate for Questionable fantasy starters last year was 50.4%. The Patriots played 16 of 31 starters listed as questionable, or 51.6%. The leaguewide play rate for Probable fantasy starters was 89.7%. The Pats played 15 of 17 probable players, or 88.2%.

He practiced in full contact drills, without the red no contact jersey, so I don't know how bad it is. See how he's listed tomorrow, and fret some more, and see what they do on Sunday.

Based on full contact practice on Monday, I'd have to expect that he's not hurt that bad, and they were just resting him. It's just a guess, and that's all you can do w/ BB. But, w/ the Cobbs, full contact practics, etc. You just have to wonder. If it was bad, he would have seen the PUP, and they would have used the roster spot to keep Cobbs and keep the depth. But not that deep gets a whole lot less deep in a hurry when one guy goes down, and then one more. That's how we found Heath Evans last year. We Lost 3 backs in 2 weeks, and had nobody to carry the ball. Found this guys scalping tickets at the Miami game, looked like he could run the ball, gave him a Jersey, and now he's the FB (okay, that's a stretch, but not much).

I just don't think Maroney is more than a minor injury, and they had the week to let it rest.

Not sure what to do...have Rudi Johnson as my #1 back...contemplating on either starting Reggie Bush or Corey Dillon as my #2 this week. Probably will flip a coin. I think Dillon will run all over the Buffalo D.

Same here, except I have Foster as my #2, and keep flip-flopping on Bush/Dillon for my Flex.

Dillon is a no brainer. Wait and see how Bush is going to be used and how effective he is, the whole world will be keying on the guy, strong chance NO will use him as a decoy until defenses stop doing backflips over him. Too many people are forgetting Deuce McAllister is the starting back. The guy isnt a joke and will have something to prove. Bush could easilly net you 20 yards rushing, 20 yards receiving and no TDs. Dillon will be totin the business.

As a Maroney owner, I hope he sits however long it takes to get him full speed. I have a feeling he could be in for a strong finish to the year. So, there is no need to rush him back with a healthy Dillon.

I agree that I would start Dillon, but don't discount Bush, this may be the best matchup he gets this year. Cleveland only has FIVE healthy DBs on the roster right now and Gary Baxter is probably only 80%. Pat kirwan on Sirius this morning talked about the horrible match up problems the Browns are going to have against NO and if any Brown DB gets hurt they won't even be able to play a nickle (asssuming they dont sign someone off the street). Since Horn will demand whatever double coverage they offer, Bush has a great opportunity to be single covered by a linebacker in open space and all Bush owners (which I am not btw) have to like that situation.

This is EXACTLY what I thought. I don't need him to play, I just want him healthy for the long haul.

Mmm, not sure about that. If Cleveland has a brain in their heads they will key on Bush any time he is line up in the slot... and not with linebackers. Horn isnt the player he used to be. He can beat ya and get the 1st down, but Bush beats ya and scores a touchdown, and everybody in the world knows it.

Practice notes

Notes from today's Patriots practice, which was held outside, in full pads:

* RB Laurence Maroney wore a brace over his left knee but looked to be his explosive self while running through bag drills. He didn't look like a player who is going to miss the season opener

The Patriots have never said anything about Maroney missing the first game. Looks like ESPN is making up the news (again) when it comes to discussing the Patriots.

I wonder if ESPN will apologize for the error and admit to either fabricating the story or relying on poor sources?

Laurence Maroney-RB- Patriots Sep. 6 - 4:15 pm et

Laurence Maroney was not on New England's injury report Wednesday.

The first-round pick went through consecutive full-contact practices and, despite ESPN's reports early in the week, "didn't look like a player who is going to miss the season opener." Maroney is not listed on the Patriots' injury report and is set to play in Week 1.

If Maroney plays as it appears he will, how do you see the carries splitting up? I was going to start Dillon over Chester Taylor in a PPR league thinking he would have a huge day all by himself against Buffalo, but this has to cut into that somewhat.

I'm starting Maroney this week. The way I see it the Pats will be up by 2 tds after the first half, and will run heavily in the second half to control the TOP. They'll rest the veteran Dillon, and Maroney will get at least 1 garbage time TD.

Anybody starting to wonder if Maroney will start week 1?
I see it 60% Dillon 40% Maroney.BUT, the goaline carries go to Dillon.
That's pretty much what I see week to week. And the Pats up early and running often starts in Buffalo this week. I even expect Evans to get a few touches this week. Faulk 5-6. Brady throws only about 20-25 balls to 9 receivers, with Watson seing 8 of them. Patriot football 2006.
