Not close -- it's not adding a syllable, it's using a different vowel.Here's the vowel for "Don" (listening sample at right) ... and for those who pronounce them differently, here's the vowel for "Dawn" (listening sample at right).

You're right that it's not a second syllable, but it is an elongated vowel sound (which is not to be confused with an elongated bowel sound, which if properly executed will generally win burritos unless some kind of fix is in). I'll put it to you this way - if we had a race to be the first to say Dawn 100 times between two people, one of whom said "Dawn" differently from "Don", and the other who pronounced them the same, the one who correctly pronounced it as "Don" would win every time, and by a lot if the Dawun people counted aloud and overenunciated the Ws in two, twelve, twenty, twenty one, and so on.
