dawn=don=prawn=fawn=ron=gone=lawn=non=on=pawn<>won

hairy=harry=merry=marry=fairy=jerry=larry=nary=tarry=cherry=vary=very

marrow=arrow=harrow=sparrow=wheelbarrow

hair=hare=air=bare=rare=spare

Making that subtle change may make you feel better about yourself as you pronounce it, but it doesn't aid communication, so it's not part of the language. It's an optional add-on that is shared by some dialects.
It's not optional, it's correct. Harry and Hairy do NOT rhyme. Marry and Mary rhyme but not Hairy and Harry. Listen to how he says it. "ahhh" not "air"

Hopefully exhibit B is as exhilerating.

Has anyone addressed the "law = lawn - n" issue yet?
I believe it was covered in at least one of the first 900 posts in the thread, but let's put it out there again - law rhymes with raw which ryhmes with ha and bra and fa la la la la, and all of them have the same vowel sound as don, dawn and lawn.

18 pages of Shtick has got to be a record, no?
Technically shtick rules were broken in this thread if it's indeed shtick. If you're asked point blank if it's shtick, you can't deny it (like if you ask a cop if they're a cop). You have to say yes or it doesn't count. So, no, this is not 18 pages of shtick. It's just 18 pages, like a cooking meat with fire thread.

WTF is wrong with you people?Harry does not rhyme with hairy.Marry does not rhyme with mary, and neither of those rhymes with merry.There is no rational argument for why any of those words should be pronounced the same way.
You're extremely confused with "rhyme" and "sounds exactly alike in every aspect". Even if there are small pronunciation differences based on the dialect where you learned to speak, they still rhyme.

I imagine I should be shocked that this thread is between pages long. But I'm not. At all.

I can't even fathom a way these two words would sound different.
Hairy = Hair reeHarry = Ha(ve) reeMarry and Mary are the exact same. No two ways about it.

:goodposting: OK I'll admit that there are people in this country that had the misfortune of living in certain places where there is some sort of strange collective compulsion to over exaggerate the vowel sound in "dawn". The kinds of places where you spend 4 or 5 months out of the year worrying about salting your walk way and chipping ice off your windshield with a rock. They're still wrong but I can see it happening. But this whole 'hairy' doesn't sound exactly like 'Harry' is insane.Who was the guy that did all the Cubs games? Harr-E Carey?
