Is it supposed to be some sort of girly thing to buckle up? I'm way behind the times.......
Yeah, I'm a little lost, too. I'd like to hear from non-bucklers why they don't buckle up.
I don't. I've never put much thought into it. It wasn't the law when I got my license. I just never did. The results of this poll surprise me as much as you but for different reasons. It's certainly not smart. It's safer and there's no downside.

Though, I do normally sit in the middle on a 3 person roadtrip. Easier to pass beer and my hearing's not great. Not that those happen often anymore.

No good reason, but I suppose that's why I don't

Does wearing a seat belt in the backseat even prevent anything? Someone find me the # of people that have died in an accident while riding in the back seat without a seat belt where the people in the front seats wearing seat belts lived. My guess is the # is pretty darn small. I'd much rather be able to spread out in the back without some restrictive seat belt. I'm 6'4. Those backseats can get pretty tight.

The NIH estimates put the reduction in fatalities by 55-75% for adults in rear seats with the use of seat belts.

WTF is with all the people getting busy in the backseat? You're not 16 anymore. You can go inside.

35 years ago you would "insult the driver" buckling up around here. Then friends starting dying needlessly so that stupidity became a casualty.

Thanks for the link Officer. I had no idea there was a backseat law in any state. Guess I'm the ####### now. Do you have any links to which states allow open containers in vehicles?

Ugh, I can't remember what movie this is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I have to go look it up.

edit........I can't believe I forgot that was Old School. Slapping myself in the face.

Regarding back seat, no, I dont wear my seatbelt in the back seat, though I very rarely am in the back (though on my recent trip with friends in the back seat of the van I did wear it), and yes, always make my kids it.

"Sorry, your seatbelt seems to be broken. What do you recommend I do?"

"I recommend you stop being such a (bad word). You're in the backseat."

High school kid just died this week after a SUV rolled and he was unbuckled in the back seat. The other back seat rider was in the hospital (also unbuckled). The two kids in the front were buckled and not injured.

Can't believe this is serious, and 1/3 of the people answering NO. Is this an "age" or "south" type of thing?
OPM's link shows it's focused on the South, but not exclusive either.

Not illegal to skip the seat belt in the back seat in (for adults).....

Alabama

Arkansas

Connecticut

Florida

Georgia

Iowa

Kansas

Michigan

Mississippi

New York

Oklahoma

Tennessee

West Virginia

Apparently, in 3 other states, you can't be ticketed for no back seatbelt unless you were pulled over for some other citation (MD, NJ, NC)

Read this, and then tell me it isn't "cool" to buckle up :(

Overwhelmed and grateful for the community’s support, the teen’s father, Greg Alyea, broke the hushed conversations of those grappling with a teenager’s death.

“We don’t want his death to be in vain,” his father told the crowd that encircled the family.

“If you’re the driver of a vehicle … please make sure your occupants are buckled in or don’t drive until they are.

“He may have been alive today if he had been strapped in.”

State Patrol Lt. Eric Roeske said Alyea and Borchardt were seated in the back and were thrown from the SUV. The lieutenant said that “for some reason [passengers] are less likely to wear seat belts in the back,” even though belts are legally required regardless of where a passenger is seated.

If I'm driving, I insist that everyone has on a seat belt (including back seat). I don't want someone breaking my neck in an accident.

I'm amazed how many times I pick up business partners/clients for lunch and they give me a weird look when I ask them to buckle the seat belt in the back too.

"It will help save your life."

"Yeah. But is there a law that makes me do it?"

"Umm... well, no. I guess not. But your chances of surviving a crash are 75% greater if..."

"No law? 'Nuff said. Get that seatbelt off of me, pansy."

Me not wearing one has nothing to do with being "cool"..

I'm 42 and drive a mini-van.. way past the point of worrying about my image. I don't wear one because frankly it doesn't even cross my mind when I get in the back seat (which is rare).

It's like being shocked that somebody doesn't wear ear muffs and safety goggles while mowing their lawn...

Good question... The answer is "sometimes"... I know it's stupid and reckless and dangerous.. But the simple truth is, if I think about it, I put it on.

My wife has a 2007 Camry Hybrid that will absolutely drive you insane with beeping until you click it..So in that car, I have it on 100% of the time. In my truck? not so much.

It's a GMC 2500HD crew cab and I drive 3 miles to work. I know I'm still rolling the dice by not wearing it, but it's not like I get in and think "screw it, i'm taking my chances"..

I honestly don't even think about it.. when I do, I put it on. Does that make sense??

Yeah that makes sense. I would be more surprised by someone who religiously buckles in the front seat but doesn't buckle in the back.

Reminds me of high school, some kid would be showing off and everyone in the car would buckle their seat belts.

Congratulations on making the worst analogy in the history of this forum.

Back in 1979 my mom and I were in a serious car accident. We were crossing over 4 lanes with a turn lane in the middle. We got to the turn lane and a guy in the left lane stopped for us. We inched forward and a car going 85 (in a 35) zone hit the side of the car (my side, the passenger). Neither one of us had seat belts on. My mom was knocked out and taken to the hospital. I was knocked out but came to. I had the car door with tons of glass on my lap, and I was practically on my mom's lap. The cop told me it was a good thing we DIDN'T have seat belts on. If we did, we wouldn't have been able to move with the seats/absorb the shock the way we did. I for sure would have been dead as the seat belt wouldn't have allowed me to move practically onto my mom.

I know this is a fluke and not the norm, but can't say wearing your seat belt will always save your life.

Say what you want about Hitler but at least he wore his seatbelt in the backseat.

No. I don't wear one in the front seat either. It's my silent protest against the asinine Texas laws that tell me I must wear a seatbelt when in a vehicle yet I can legally ride my motorcycle without a helmet.
Your silent protest will do you a lot of good when you're launched through the windshield.

Morons.
I've totalled 2 vehicles while driving unbuckled and walked away from both without a scratch. Neither vehicle had airbags or crumple zones. Come to think of it, I've never broken a bone or missed much work. Maybe I'm unbreakable.

Need to start a poll to see who wears a helmet while driving. That's got to be safer, no?
True story... we were getting a damaged vehicle fixed... It had to go from the body shop to the glass shop for a windshield.. no windshield in the car.

My dad drove the car from the body shop down the road without a windshield, wearing a full face snowmobile helmet (it was Winter)...

He got pulled over by a cop.. :bag:

If there is a shoulder harness, yes, I wear it. Lap belt only- no. Maybe it's an urban legend, but I had always heard that wearing the lap belt alone was more dangerous than not wearing the belt at all due to the high risk of internal injuries.
