We have a bracket attached to the tree at the end of our driveway and I have about 10 different flags that I cycle through from spring through fall. American flag is up now and will be for July 4. As a liberal I don't like that the flag has seemingly been appropriated as a symbol by the right.

All the more reason to fly it, my friend.

I do from spring through fall. Winter where I live is too hard on flags and also the flag does not go well with Christmas decorations, which is a consideration for my wife.In my home office I have one in a display case. It was used to cover my Grandfather's coffin when he was interred at Arlington. I keep it out of respect for my mother who is still alive. We have two other full sized flags that are displayed, in addition to our regular flag, on Memorial day, the Fourth of July, and Veterans day.Recently I received a flag, a uniform, and the medals received by my best friend's father during WWII. My friend having passed without progeny his mother, now in her 90's did not know what to do with them. I have had the items cleaned and preserved and am trying to find an appropriate home for the items. The man fought in WWII at many battles, most famously the Battle of the Bulge before being wounded, captured and interred at a German prison camp. Being Jewish his treatment was horrendous. I like to think that maybe the items have some historic value to someone. We shall see.
There is an awesome museum and monument in Bastogne commemorating the battle of the bulge, with tons of really cool items from soldiers, etc. from tanks down to pocket trinkets.

Me and my wife went there and really enjoyed it. Tons of history and also pretty spooky with how many were killed.

They love Americans there, telling stories of soldiers protecting their land, etc.

Maybe they would put it up in the museum?

Last year I attended a symposium sponsored by the Holocaust Museum. I have a contact there who I wrote. My friend's father's siblings, 5 in all, were all interred during the war. One survived and immigrated to America. I remember his forearm tattoo vividly. At any rate their story is a compelling one, and one that may be relevant to their documentation efforts.

I have also written to the Army. I am wondering whether his unit or Division might have a museum and have interest. Also, there is a Museum in Milwaukee, his home town after the war until his death. They have expressed some minor interest, but without guaranteeing it will become a permanent part of their collection I do not wish, yet, to let it go. Not while my friend's mother is still alive. She is a remarkably good woman, was very kind to me when I was young, and I want to return that kindness and honor that relationship now. She would appreciate, I am sure, it going to a place that would honor his memory, but not one where it would just sit in forgotten storage. If nothing else I can guarantee that his memory will not pass, and his things will be honored during my life. I think that alone will please her.

Still, if the current inquiries do not bear fruit I may pursue your lead. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I do not, maybe if I owned my house and didn't rent so I could install a light to keep it illuminated at night.

As a conservative I'd love to see you fly it. I fly it because I love my country; nothing more, nothing less.

Really? I think it looks cool all by itself, too, in addition to the patriotism.

We have a variety of seasonal flags and the Stars and Stripes are in the rotation. I have to admit that I do like having the flag flying outside my house and should do so more frequently.

i am going to bed but happy memorial day keep those who died to make sure we could argue about flying the flag in your mind tomorrow and remember that at three it is the moment of rememberance so have a brew have a brat and welcome the start of summer but remember the real reason for the day

No. I am far too pessimistic to ever fly an American flag, but the guy 4 houses down from me has had a giant flagpole with an American flag on it since I moved into my house. Just last month he added a second flagpole to his front yard with a Marines flag on it. :loco:

Nothing against Marines, but two massive flagpoles flying two massive flags towering over a neighborhood of single-story homes is a bit much. Guy's an ### too.

The guy being an ### may be the rub. Do you dislike all of the following?

Christmas decorations (especially giant manger scenes and Griswald lighting)

Halloween decorations

People wearing a cross or religious symbols

People wearing cloths with their college name

People wearing Sharks jerseys

People with Sharks or 49ers flags on theirs cars

Easter decorations

Garden gnomes

People with John McCain for president bumper stickers

Anyone with a bumper sticker

Someone with an "I'm with stupid" t-shirt with an arrow pointing in one direction

I could go on and on. To me if you dislike all of the above, then you're not a hypocrite. But displaying pride has a lot different applications, having pride in country or service is better than most IMO.

I'm not a religious person, but I respect those who have pride in their religion. Hell, I respect anyone with pride because it's something I think people fail to properly appreciate. Just my opinion, won't change the fact that guy is an ### I guess.

I dislike sports flags on cars and presidential election bumper stickers from elections over a year ago. I'm a car nut, so bumper stickers in general make me cringe, but I can look past them (stick figure families are an exception). There are varying degrees of obnoxious, and I guess flags tend to bring this out for me. The presidential bumper stickers are the same, but they highlight laziness which I am also prejudiced against.

Did I pass your test?

This may be partially why I hate this guy's flags, but every time I am out front working on my cars he walks over and reminds me that having an eyesore on my driveway is "by law a public nuisance." Meanwhile this mother####er has 25 foot flag poles flying 10-foot flags. As I am fixing my totaled car that I damn near died in after getting hit by a semi truck, this guy has the nerve to threaten suing me for making too much noise as I am cutting body panels off the car.

In fairness the guy could have flown the marines flag below the Americans flag on the first flagpole.

Yes it does. I was trying to say I fly it without an agenda.

What do you must light the flag 24 hours a day guys do to dispose of those little mini American flags you get on the 4th of July?

I'm pretty shocked and pleasantly surprised Otis is partaking in something that I would've thought he deemed a "hillbilly" thing.

Usually people flying the flag do so because they support their country. If liberals aren't flying it, it's because they choose to not show their support in that manner. If the flag is a symbol of the right, it's because the left doesn't use it. if they did, it would just be a symbol of national unity.

I have a flag pole in my front yard, and did in my last house too. I didn't think I was being ridiculous, just patriotic. Grew up in the Chicago suburbs, not the bible belt.

No, not really my thing as I think it looks a bit tacky personally, but good for everyone who does it and likes it.

It is better than a giant flag on the back of your car if we were ranking top spots to fly flags.

Wait....Easter, Halloween, and garden gnomes show pride in what exactly?

My God, how do you even get through the day with all of that optimism your neighbor has? Is there a HOA you can appeal to? Does your insurance offer therapy?
