Doctor Visit - What to Have Done (1 Viewer)

Simple Question:

Like most FBG's I'm a paragon of health, top percentile in all categories. However, just to confirm this what tests are you guys having done in your yearly check-ups?

Talking a mid 40's male.

Partially depends on family history.

For example, I think the fingers in your butt start at age 40 if the family history warrants it.

Got that on the list although the doctor seems to say I'm all good. In my last couple of visits. Maybe this will be the year that the behymen gets violated.

My work used to do a blood test yearly as a healthy living program that tested blood sugar, triglycerides, and cholesterol. That was discontinued so I'm getting that done.

Make sure she lubes up your undercarriage real well paying special attention to the ballsbearings and replaces the Fetzer valves that are leaking.

Oh yeah, I think annual blood work should be done for all adults.

They're the doctor and you're the patient. They decide what you need to have done at your physical, not you. Just show up and follow the pre-appointment instructions.  They'll take care of the rest.

This the thing, they don't do that. I have to tell them stuff and then they say "sure we'll do that".

I had my physical last week. Starts with weight check, temp, BP.  Change into gown. Doc comes in, asks a few questions. Checks ears, eyes, nose, throat. Listens to heart, lungs. Presses down in belly area. Checks the junk/nuts. Reflexes. Prostate exam in fetal position. EKG.  Tell him my toe hurts from running, he checks that. Blood drawn for CBC, lipid panel, HIV (wow), other stuff. That's about it. They go to school for this stuff.

Get your testosterone checked.  There is a huge Reddit Sub on it.

I get the parts all up to the prostate, everything after they don't do unless I ask.

Weight, temp, BP I can all do on my own at the grocery store or at home

I put a list together and sent it to my doc. That was on there as well as this stuff:

A "CMP" comprehensive metabolic panel and a "CBC" complete blood cell count. Found that stuff on the internet. Sounds like there's nothing crazy obvious I'm missing.

The finger in the butt isn't only for the prostate. It's also way for them to also see if you're bleeding internally. I was well under 40 and my doctor did this. I was shuked, so I asked him and thats what he told me.

It's called an Oklahoma Physical
It's not. My doctor takes care of everything because he went to medical school. I don't tell him what I think I should have done, he just does what he thinks needs to be done. That's the basic gist of a normal doctor-patient relationship.

Until they give you the "oh man if we only caught this earlier" line.

You're expected to push for certain tests and alert your doctor to potential future health problems? If you have a family history of a certain disease you tell them but they're going to ask you that at your first visit with any doctor when you fill out the forms. If you go to a doctor and he doesn't know which tests to run and what to check during your physical you seriously should look into going to someone else. Have you ever ordered a pizza and it shows up without sauce? "Damn, I should have told them to put sauce on it." Of course not. They make pizza all day, they know it needs to be sauced. Your doctor went to med school and then was a resident for years. Let him make the medical decisions. Again, if you don't feel like you're in good hands ask your friends about their doctor and if one of them has a great one just go to that doctor.

i keep getting a letter I'm due for an upper endoscopy.  I had 3 of them and 2 colonoscopies -

They never found anything wrong and attributed my issues to IBS.

So now this doctor gets all threatening about how failure to come in blah blah blah.

I'm like did he not check his charts - they found nothing wrong

I think he knows what tests to do but they don't seem to order them. Maybe he sucks, maybe I'm super healthy, I don't know that's why I was asking people what they get done around my age.

Have a big list now of stuff to ask.

I'm starting to feel a little insulted I haven't had the doc give me the ol finger up the bum.

Guy has never even offered.

Seems they should have most things covered after you tell them the basics about how you've been feeling lately, any issues you have, etc.

My doctor checked my prostate this year.  While I was doing this...  :tebow:  I did have to question why I felt both of his hands on my shoulders while it was being done.

Yeah, flowers would have been a nice gesture.

I would beg for the fingers in your butt to see how he reacts.

when do we do the PSA test?

my dr (coincidentally my BIL's college roommate) doesn't think it's necessary, in spite of my dad having had prostate cancer and my age (48). plus he won't even stick anything up my butt. :sadbanana:

Got a physical done a few years back at 37.    besides the normal stuff they do at any other visit all he did was blood work. so disappointed.  I though at the very leat he'd check me for Lance Armstrong disease.

I guess this is pretty typical. Always seeing these articles about things you should have done.

I'm at least getting the guy to take some blood this time and have a list of things he needs to at least tell me about.
