Does San Diego care about the 3rd seed vs 4th seed? (1 Viewer)

Jags+Pats or Browns+Colts. Besides that, they would never lay down to the Broncos at home.

Well, they beat Indy and lost to the Pats. But does that mean much? The Charger team that lost to the Pats is not the same team we're seeing right now.ETA: Whoops forgot about the first round. Yeah, I guess they would definitely want to play the Browns or Titans in the first round instead of the Jags.

I wouldn't want to play Jacksonville in the first round and the third seed is better than the 4th in case of second round upsets. I'd say they care.

 
Game plan for tomorrow night:

LT left, LT middle, LT right / Rivers incompletion / Sproles left, Sproles middle, Sproles right

Rinse and repeat.

The real question is does Pittsburgh care? Their only chance is if SD loses one of their last 2 games. Right now the Steelers are playing awful but they're also dropping like flies. Given how awful their O-line is, I think it might be a good idea to give Ben the week off next week. They lose him and they lose the slim chance they would have of beating the Jags. Anyways, I'm pretty sure they could beat Baltimore with Batch.....
 
Seeding between the 3 and 4 really comes down to the odds of hosting the conference title game. The 3 can host it if it meets the 4 or 5 in that game. It can never play the 6 there because 3 and 6 meet in a wild card game. The 4 can host it if it meets the 6. It can never meet the 5 there because 4 and 5 play in a wild card game.

So theoretically speaking, the odds of an extra home playoff game are higher as the 3 compared to the 4.

i hope denver makes it a game. i am down 28 PTs with portis still having to play the 2nd half and LT and Gates

Agreed. The main reason they want to be the #3 is to avoid the Pats and pray that the Jags or Steelers can upset the them. That's the dream scenario for the Chargers.
 
Everything I've read says they care about winning that game. I have to think that the Jags/Patriots are much more worrisome than the Browns/Colts. The browsn are not playing well and the Charges have already beaten the Colts (although it was a mess of a game for both teams). I think it's the Jags that really makes the difference. They're playing great and look very tough.

I hope LT comes out early. I've got a 29 point lead with AP left tonight and Gates (or possibly Scheffler) tomorrow. My opponent has LT. Hopefully, I can make one decision right this week and pick correctly tomorrow (sat Portis for K Smith and sat R White for Driver).

Any Charger homers chime in on this?

You have to think the Chargers NEED to keep winning and playing well heading into the playoffs for the higher seed and momentum! This is a BIG division game either way you cut it too. Only way Charger starters start coming out of the game is if SD builds a BIG lead IMO!

I need LT2 to play as I have a 7 pt lead to protect against J.Cutler for the title too! Like I said, I would be interested in hearing what any Charger homers have heard locally on how much the Chargers want to win this game on Monday night!

 
Regardless of not wanting to face Jacksonville/New England, you have to play for the best possible playoff position. Last year, the difference between the #3 and #4 seed was that the AFC Championship game was played in Indianapolis, not New England.

 
This is an idiotic thread.

The Chargers desperately need to win their next 2 games -- to avoid Jax in the first round and to avoid New England in the second round.

I'm not saying the Chargers don't want to finish the regular season strong, but I doubt they want to avoid New England in the second round. After what happened last season, they'd probably like nothing better than to beat the Patriots in the second round and end their undefeated season.Of course, I'm hoping the Colts earn that distinction (ending the Pats' season) in the AFC championship game.
 
Chargers are 0-2 vs. the Pats the last 2 times they've played, and 2-0 vs. the Colts.

Who do you think they'd rather face? And, as mentioned above, the #3 seed hosted last year's AFC Championship game.

Yeah, it's awfully coincidental how they're a better team when they're not playing the Pats. We heard all about their revenge match when they got torched earlier this year, and if they get as far as the Pats they'll get torched again. Then, if they meet next year we'll hear about it all over again.

If I was a New England fan, I would be slightly worried about them. The Patriots are looking less super-human in bad weather and a team like San Diego, or Jacksonville that can keep Brady and Moss on the sidelines could give them a run for their money.I still wouldn't bet against the Patriots, but at least the games should be close, and a lot of fun to watch.
 
The Chargers are in the playoffs. The question that needs to be asked is this. Are they more concerned with playoff seeding or making sure that they don't get their star players injured in the second half of a potentially meaningless game. It really won't matter who they face in the first round of the playoffs if LT is out with an injury.

Teams don't think that way, especially not the Chargers whose only goal is winning the SB. They will do everything in their power to get the best chance to do that even if it means risking injuries. On top of that, they finish the season with their two biggest rivals so everything points to these two games meaning a lot to them.
 
Given all of this logic, explain to me Gruden's decision to rest his starters and end up with the #4 seed.

I don't think Norv wants be known as the guy that killed the team's playoff chances by keeping LT in one play too long.

This is critical for me as I a down 14 and can choose between Gates and Marshall.
