Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (2 Viewers)

Dolphins are set on Tuesday to place Jonathan Martin on the non-football injury list and Martin himself does not believe he can return to the team ever again...

Well no #### Sherlock, I know this is gonna sound callous so I apologize but WTF did he think was gonna happen when he left the team and did all this?

It sounds like Miami is also taking a slightly stern approach with him as well as Incognito.

I guess we are supposed to support Martin and say he is brave? Am I capturing the mindset of some of our viewers and listeners out there? ;)

Martin is basically being removed form the roster. Miami has to do it so they can go out and sign a few OL, wonder if there are any guys without jobs that will pass on this and say they want no part of.
Regarding this:

Doesn't this require a diagnosis, ie an actual physical or mental "injury," of some kind?
I was thinking folks were assuming Martin checked himself into a Betty Ford type place for people with mental instability. Obviously if he was going to see a psych Dr, I guess that qualifies even if he isn't getting round the clock treatment...maybe they took Martin's word for it and are putting him on the non-football injury list. I would also guess that term encompasses several types of things off the field.

Wow... just read the text of a voicemail (there are apparently others, and similar texts) Incognito left for Martin.

Imagine Riley Cooper -- except 5x worse and towards a teammate.

I'm just throwing some ideas out, but maybe Martin has some form of autism.

Or a completely different line of thought could be Martin is gay. I could easily see other players harassing big time on that and how the evidence could be so compelling that the team would act so decisively.
Or Incognito is just a d***.
it sounds like this happened to others...

it is unlikely they were all gay or autistic?

easier to conclue incognito is a touble maker, since he was suspended from college twice, and suspended or fired for conduct at least twice as a pro.

if the MIA vets borderline extorted some rookies and young players as alleged, and took things to another level, coupled with ingognito leaving threatening messages (another post in this thread, i don't know if it has been vetted, noted a report that message could have been racial in nature), that would be a more straightforward explanation for the swift and decisive action, as PFT called it.

it also may have been at the urging of the league, or their own internal legal department?

Maybe the NFL needs to take control of the team for the rest of the season. At least have advisers in the Miami offices looking over everything.

Yes, that is what I genuinely believe. Plenty of things are bigger than football and addressing cultures like this is an important act that requires important sacrifices.

But then, I see this as potentially along the same spectrum as Curt Flood giving up his baseball career to fight the reserve clause...

Updated after midnight last night after the suspension, did you watch the video? Pretty damaging stuff all the way around.

They keep referring to this as rookie hazing. Why is that? Martin is in his 2nd year and technically a veteran.
Went to Philbin in the Spring with issues from his rookie year.

Other rookies speaking out about this as well, current rookies.
But there was the stuff from this year about paying for a Vegas trip or something, right?

This sounds like extortion to me.
It is, and Richie might have a jail cell to look forward to at some point.

Incognito is done. No team will touch him now.

Other Dolphins players have apparently told Schefter (and presumably the team?) that Incognito left racial/bullying texts and VMs for them as well.

ESPN just read the text of one VM to Martin and I didn't transcribe it. I'm sure it'll hit the Internet shortly.

Is there any context to these messages or a root cause or reason as to why he is so focused on Martin? I'm not asking what Martin did to "deserve" such treatment, just what in Incognito's mind made him think this was at all ok.

I'm sure Incognito is a big obnoxious goon, but I'm finding it hard to believe he's not being singled out right now to take heat off the coaches and higher ups. He's an easy target.

Having said that, it's very likely Martin is a big #####.
I like to see you say that to his face.

Class bully develops a little gang, picks on kids different than them year after year, grade after grade. Teacher and school do nothing about until the bullied kid lashes out; now the school district is involved and management is cutting heads to save themselves. Pathetic, Philbin should just acknowledge that he has failed as a coach and beg for mercy instead of playing this "i didn't know" card.

I blame the management of the team just as much or maybe even more so than the player to allow this behavior to go without intervention or punishment.

That's great Josh, good for you. I do think there are going to be a sizable amount of fans that will not be on this side of the fence. I am most aggravated with the extortion which is highly illegal and carries more than a Goodell stiff suspension. He could be facing jail time. The other stuff falls into personal morality and I think it's naive to think hazing does not happen on most NFL teams, NCAA teams, college frat houses, if you want to wipe that out of society, good luck in that.

Career Over.
Martin's? Maybe

Richie? He'd get signed tomorrow if the Phins cut him.

Hate to say it, but nobody likes a whistle-blower. Right or wrong, bullies bring less drama. Publicly everyone says, "yes, bring in the rat" but behind closed doors they say "gimme the bully"
if the allegations are true and the ingognito case gets blown wide open, he may be facing league sanctions.

i'd be really surprised if incognito is with another team any time soon, for that reason.

but again, apart from that, with his troubled history, and the added layer of controversy and being a potential locker room cancer, i don't see teams breaking his door down and clamoring for his services, with his potential to be a toxic disruption.

Do you know anything about Incognito? He's a straight up sociopath, and not just on the field. This guy is the best argument i've ever heard that Suh isn't such a bad guy.

was he drunk during this?

The threatening voicemail Richie Incognito left for Jonathan Martin has been revealed and heard by both the Dolphins and the NFL.

ESPN's Adam Schefter has the vile quotes. "Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of (expletive). I saw you on Twitter, you been training ten weeks. (I want to) (expletive) in your (expletive) mouth. (I'm going to) slap your (expletive) mouth. (I'm going to) slap your real mother across the face (laughter). (Expletive) you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you." Jonathan Martin has left the team and Incognito has been suspended indefinitely.

Its not that hard. You just have to not allow it as the coach/GM/Owner/Team Leaders. Its not rocket science.

This argument that hazing is a part of football and will never go away is just false. It can be eliminated. You just have to want to eliminate it. And I reckon - after this - the NFL will see a very big, financial reason to want to eliminate it.

Schefter also said that other Dolphins have come forward to say that, like Martin, they didn't feel safe during team activities.

The Dolphins' brass really need to hope there's no evidence that players brought this stuff forward and they ignored it. That would move it into a whole other category of legal trouble.

At one point, I was part of the "Man-Up" crowd in response to Martin leaving.

Now I think he/NFLPA did the right thing legally. He did the right thing stepping away from this amount of drama instead of confronting it head on.

He would prob run home to tell on me.
I guess I understand you jealously give that he's tougher than you, smarter than you, and richer than you. Keep typing internet tough guy.

Ohhh... Do you mean "not expected to re-join the team anytime soon"?
In the video the NFLN reporter there says Martin is not comfortable returning to the team. I'm not gonna argue with you about this much more. You feel strongly Martin was bullied and you want to see this permanently removed from not just the Phins but the entire NFL. We're on two different missions buddy I'm a Phinsfan and your not.

I can't even think about the better good of the NFL right now and making this some crusade thru a message board to right something that has happened forever and ever in the NFL.

You asked for the link, I sent it, others can chime in, I'm not splitting hairs with you. I have an emotional attachment to the team and you don't, OK? I think that's fair and I am being brutally honest about myself which most in here are not gonna do. And I agree with another poster, you are trying to bully posters who are just trying to get information out if it doesn't exactly line up with whatever your motives are here. At least that is how it is coming across.

Let's focus on Incognito' messages coming out now on the internet. This sounds larger than the NFL, it sounds like more than bullying/hazing here, it sounds like Incognito needs to be arrested in put in handcuffs.

To those saying Martin is a puzzay; he almost certainly had that thug Pouncey and Incognito against him. Apparently the other two starting linemen followed them. How was he going to 'stand up' to that?

He's smart enough to know what the Hernandez clique does to people that stand up to them....

ESPN

Transcripts of voice mail messages and text messages left for the Miami Dolphins' Jonathan Martin by teammate Richie Incognito indicate a pattern of racial epithets and profane language.

Multiple sources confirmed to ESPN that the following is a transcript of a voice message Incognito left for Martin in April 2013, a year after Martin was drafted:

"Hey, wassup, you half n----- piece of s---. I saw you on Twitter, you been training 10 weeks. [i want to] s--- in your f------ mouth. [i'm going to] slap your f------ mouth. [i'm going to] slap your real mother across the face [laughter]. F--- you, you're still a rookie. I'll kill you."

sounds like a misunderstanding here....that can be construed in a number of ways... ;)

You're contradicting yourself or at least you're not being consistent.

Sure hazing has occurred forever. This is not the same thing and you know it. This isn't shaving some hair or having a guy get up and sing his school fight song.

Rookie dinner -- I get it. Making them carry equipment, playing practical jokes, fine.

My question is, what kind of idiot would agree to give someone money? You're a 6'5" 320 lbs man, if someone is trying to extort money from you, tell them to get bent and stand up for yourself. Wrong of Richie to even ask, but telling him to get lost a few times would have resulted in A) him moving onto to another target (unlikely) or B) you getting into a fight that is quickly broke up, then you expose him for being a complete idiot and fighting you for not giving him thousands of dollars. Either way, you win if you stand up for yourself.

Richie Incognito - G - Dolphins
Sources tell FOX Sports that suspended LG Richie Incognito sent text messages and left voicemails with Jonathan Martin "that are both threatening and racially charged in nature."
Incognito was not suspended indefinitely for simple bullying. These texts and voicemails will be shared with the league as both the NFL and the Dolphins investigate the incident. FOX Sports goes as far to say this is an "alleged hate crime." Martin left the team following a prank played by his fellow offensive linemen in the cafeteria last Monday. He has not yet returned. Incognito has a long history of wayward behavior both on and off the field.

This bozo's career is toast.
I'm not sticking up for Incognito but, this says a prank played by "fellow offensive linemen." I wonder if there will be any other guys that get in trouble. It doesn't sound like this is just on Icognito.
Hard to say. Standing up and leaving the lunch table the moment Martin sits down could be easily be done by most in strictly good, every day sort of humor. I wouldn't make the leap to say because people participated in that, they necessarily crossed the line otherwise.

But the other comment from the rookie defensive player who has had to pay so much he's nearly broke, that does seem to me to suggest it's more prevalent than you'd expect if it was just one person doing it.

<_< C'mon, dude.
I mean I think its a disgrace that this could go on amongst adults. Incognito is a big, dumb ox and I'm sure there are other similar dumb #######s all over the league. But imo, Martin comes off like a big sissy running home to mom and dad. I'm not saying throw down with the big maniac, but there has to be a better way for a grown man to stand up for himself.
