Dolphin Players bullied Jonathan Martin, Richie Incognito SUSPENDED (2 Viewers)

Am i the only one who doesn't think the texts are as bad as i was expecting given the huge whirlwind on espn etc? Maybe somethings wrong with me but i just don't see the threats. Taken in a vacuum they seem bad but put together with the pictures together, the birthday well wishes, the shout outs etc, it seems like he was busting his balls. Overdone yes, very immature yes but im not seeing the omg here.
How about the assumptions that he can extort $$$ from rookies? Telling the local media that THill will just buy them jet skis and he'll do it with a smile. How about telling Martin he had to pay him $15k for a Vegas try martin was skipping?
I do not agree with this either, but 15k for a guy making about 1.2 mil a year is like .0013% of his yearly salary. Comparatively, that is like less than $50 for a person making 40k. This isn't like a mafia level extortion ring or anything.

C'mon, you don't think Martin has some sissy in him? You think he handled this well?
So you either get in a physical altercation or you're a sissy?
Wooooo dude....you have to read my posts. I said "I'm not saying throw down with the maniac..."I mean none of us know how Martin tried to handle this previously, but start at standing up for yourself and telling the big dope "hey I'm here to play football, leave me out of your bull####". Or, if you're so terrified of the guy being dangerous like some others are suggesting (which I think is ridiculous), how about knocking on your coaches door, or general managers door?

If the guys first defense was to run home to mommy and daddy, then I don't care what any of you think, imo he's a sissy. A sissy that I do feel bad for, but a sissy nonetheless.
do you know he didn't go to the coaches... is the first instinct that martin is guilty until proven innocent, and sort the facts out later?
I'm just going off what I've seen and heard and read.
understood.impotant aspects of the case have only broken In the last 12 hours.

details are still emerging.

does it seem unreasonable to wait for more information before passing judgement on and name calling martin?
This doesn't go both ways?
Others are being irresponsible for not calling him a sissy when we don't know what happened?is that your point?
No. Incognito and Pouncey getting destroyed in here you're ok with? For the record I'm all for it. I have no problems name calling everyone involved at this point.

Only if we assume the earning potential is replicated every year, and we know it's not.

You want guys like Incognito on that line....you need guys like Incognito on that line.
YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!
It does seem that some of this likely happened from Philbin down to the OL Coach(Jim Turner) and then Incognito as basically Keifer Sutherland here.

It's good banter, might be partially true but likely a wet fantasy for most of us.

First of all, it was 100k total. Secondly, unless you are (say) EXTORTING CASH FROM A ROOKIE, you typically pay some tax on that. And you pay your agent, and your lawyer, etc. 100k aint chump change. Half these guys squeal like a stuffed pig when they get hit with a 10k fine for taking a guys head off.

Yeah, I was expecting more. Its hard to take a threat from April seriously if you just bring it up now.

Yeah, but after 1 season of forking out 100k he would get to do the same to future rookies for the rest of his career. So you could make way more than you initially shell out if you have a long career. Just more motivation to play hard. :sarcasm:

Unfortunately this story is not just gonna be the nightly NFLN at 5:00, this is now on MSNBC, the View, lot of people who know very little about professional sports are going to weigh in with their opinion and that is gonna muddy the waters a lot here.

Ancient civilizations used to fight to the death to settle their disputes. That would stop the bullying....when did we get to be such pansies that a punch in the mouth was enough?

The wussification continues...
That would be great if we could just bring back duels. They worked pretty well hundreds of years ago.

This will be historic in the realm of hazing and bullying. This topic was already toxic enough with modern tech and the tragedies of young people. This will be a catalyst for something. I don't know what though.

LeBatard basically saying Incognito who fancies himself a leader and also a little nuts basically did a Col Nathan Jessup if you are familiar with that character in A Few Good Men...Incognito went to the coaches and said that Martin is soft or perceived as soft, coaching staff said to toughen him up. So now Incognito was ordered to toughen him up perhaps especially after Martin was crying about being bullied to the coaches. Maybe the coaches thought Martin was soft.
That sounds pretty damning of Philbin...jeeze.

Great, so were gonna lose Martin, Incognito AND Pouncey.
Christian Peter is available...
If Martin got bullied maybe a guy named Christian Peter shouldn't go to Miami.
There was a day when Christian Peter made Incognito look like Mother Theresa.
I believe it. If you are going to carry around a name of Christian Peter you better be tough.

Oh he doesn't know it yet perhaps but he's gone. Has to be. As soon as I inserted him in as my avatar last Sun/Mon, things have gone downhill for him 1st. Coincidence of course.

Something else people need to remember is the NFL isn't like other jobs. You can't quit and work for someone else. If anyone here were in a work environment where everyone was a total d*ck, kept yelling at us for money and calling us stupid nicknames we hated we would just get up and quit. That is not possible in Martin's case.

If you want to play in the NFL, you don't decide where to go and once you get there you are stuck for 5 years. So if Martin went to the coaches last spring and they did nothing about it, then he would be facing another 3 1/2 years of this if he took no action. So he really has 3 options then. Go on the offensive, request a trade or walk out.

Not everyone is a fighter so going on the offensive may not be Martin's thing. And Incognito sounds like one of meanest/toughest SOB's out there. Demanding a trade may have been the better option, but that puts a lot of the pressure on Martin. People may think he just made this stuff up for leverage. So there is walking out which sounds more like the move of a passive person who just couldn't take it anymore. Could Martin have handled it better? Maybe, but you can't blame a guy for being passive in a situation like this.

I would pay money to watch the "punch the bully in the mouth" crowd - try punching Incognito in the mouth.
Let me ask you......would you rather take a chance and punch a guy in the mouth or give him 100,000 dollars of your money.
$100k, I'm short and don't like pain.
What if you were 6'5 320
What if the guy I'm punching is 6'3"/320 and insane?

I might not worry about the fight. But I'd worry about my back being turned after the fight.

I listened to part of the broadcast. I did hear something like what MOP says, and if it was the same thing as what MOP said then LeBatard absolutely didn't say Philbin suggested the toughening up. It was much more indirect. What LeBatard said was more like Incognito saw Martin as a guy that needed toughening up. Not that Philbin told/suggested to Incognito to toughen Martin up. Maybe it was a different part, but I don't think so. There is quite a bit of editorializing going on in this thread.

If that girl wouldn't have just killed herself over "cyber-bullying" I don't think this story would be so big.

More stories coming out against Martin now. That he 'stole' rookie OL Josh Samuda's car during training camp. That he had done the lunch room prank many times before to other players (apparantly with Incognto  ).

Again, important to separate the vile threats made by Incognito from the prevalance of hazing generally in the NFL. Two very different animals. The question is where and how the team (and the NFL) draws the line

Just an FYI.

Christian Peter's home town? Jersey

Christian Peter's college team? Nebraska

Christian Peter drafted by? NE Patriots (I bet you thought it was going to be the Dolphins) Cut one week after the draft, once Pats learned of his 7 prior criminal convictions.

If you aren't a co-ed, then you are reasonably safe around Peter. Serial rapist and abuser.

You added an extra 0. It's 0.0125, or about $500 for someone making $40,000 per year.

And if the $100,000 number is true....it would be $3,300 for someone making $40k

I would pay money to watch the "punch the bully in the mouth" crowd - try punching Incognito in the mouth.
WTF.....you don't think there are men in NFL locker rooms that can handle Incognito? Is he Superman??
No need to put words in my mouth. But, I'd pay money to watch you fight him. Because you're a man - not no sissy!
Little tip for ya....the posters suggesting Martin could have maybe stood up for himself are not suggesting they personally would be capable of it. At least I hope not.

I'd happily give Incognito all my lunch money, personally.

Incogstupido said to be released by the Dolphins. Also said Martin would like to still play football.

This made me laugh.

And not only is it funny, but it should shut up the "punch in the mouth" crowd because it answers every question as to "why don't they just punch the bully in the mouth?!??" I'm not expecting any in depth thought from people who think everyone should act like they think they should act, though.

Again, it's the way I live my life. I don't believe in violence. It usually just leads to more violence. Punch a guy and he returns with a knife. Pull a knife and the guy returns with a gun.

The only way it ends is when one person is dead. I believe this is why you are seeing kids lash out in such violent ways. Due to social media, the taunting and bullying never ends.

Little tip for you: That was the irony I was pointing out.

Adam Beasley-MIAMI HERALD saying Martin forked out $100,000 to Incognito.
Jeezus.......this Martin guy has some problems. I thought Stanford graduated intelligent guys?
Maybe he just needed you as a bodyguard.
No...he shouldn't need a bodyguard. Sounds like he needs a George Milton.
He shouldn't need one, but he did. A real tough guy, not just on the internet but in real life. Someone that could just give Incognito a look and the situation would be diffused. Probably needs to be a Bears fan.

Link to the texts? I've only seen a quote from a voicemail and tweets in this thread.

And it's not hard for me to take the threats seriously now if it was part of a pattern of behavior. Maybe Martin thought they would stop or maybe he reached his breaking point.

Many possibilities and dude clearly has some issues.

Right and then when the coaches have Martin coming to them whining about Incognito back in the Spring...you do know that Martin went to Philbin in the Spring and the coach basically threw his hands up and did nothing.

These reporters and Beasley from the Herald said "I can't tell you where I got that from directly" because it puts their sources at jeopardy.

OK, anyways there was plenty discussed about it, there will be podcast up of the show, people can pull it up and draw their own conclusions.

Again, DL is saying right now that toughening up weakness is part of the fabric in the NFL...that's a quote from the show right now. 2 DETAILS MAKE IT ABNORMAL...Giant flees the scene and the phone/text leaks.

Sure if you want to take a 95% pay cut and live in another country. Not the same as working for another company down the street.

Not necessarily. Teammates have come to blows going back forever in sports.
