Dolphin WR thread (1 Viewer)

Soley based on the pre-season

Bess

Matthews

Were clearly far and above everyone else.

My prediction for 5 for the final 53 man roster is:

Bess

Matthews

Naane

Hartline (if he can sell it to the coaches)

Marlon Moore (special teams gunner)

50/50 shot the Fins trade for James Jones this week.
Also rumors circulating now that Oakland could be wheeling and dealing too. They might be wanting to get rid of DHB who is on the old rookie salary scale. Oakland may be ready to roll with Streater, Moore, Criner, Ford, DHB being dealt makes sense. I don't think it would be a great move for Miami though.
Assuming the price is reasonable, why wouldn't this be a good move for Miami ? DHB would be their #1 WR easily. Gotta give the rookie QB somebody worthwhile to throw to.

Oddly enough, Brandon Marshall is exactly the kind of WR they need. A big possession WR who can get open all over the field and make tough catches to sustain drives. They should've just kept him. There was no good football reason to let him walk, given their other options. They have no one to blame but themselves for being in this position.

DHB is still basically just a deep threat. Despite his improvements, he's not a natural or instinctive receiver.

If I were in their shoes I go hard after Dwayne Bowe. He fits what they need and he might be available given that he's on a one year franchise tender and that Baldwin is almost ready to replace him in KC. DHB and Wallace are good, but they are not move-the-chains types. They are home run hitters, and I'm not sure that's what you need when you've got a rookie QB.

Failing Bowe, I might look at guys like Early Doucet and James Jones for cheap. They're not #1 receivers, but they're better than anything on Miami's roster.

Down here they sold the Marshall trade as a pure Philbin move. He did not want his toxic attitude on the team. He was a cancer in our locker room. Philbin wanted no part of him. We got jobbed only getting two 3rd rounders when we gave up two 2nd rounders....but the word is out about his off the field crap and his locker room poisen. We had no leverage. We have a lousy front office if you have not noticed. While I agree...on the field we need him badly....there is more to being part of a team than just showing up on Sunday to play (and drop 8 sure fire TD's like Marhsall did last year). He was a cancer in the locker room, he did not back up his QB's at all....pure malcontent, head case. A ridiculous talent on the field. But a pure punk off the field. He was not worth the headache anymore and quite frankly they rather not sign his checks anymore. Now he is Chicagos potential trainwreck. Because he is in reality one strike away from a season long suspension.I would love for this team to get Dwayne Bowe down here. But I think that might be a pipe dream. God help us if we trade for a bust like DHB....garbage. We need a potential solid guy. I like James Jones a lot. He has had drop issues....but Brandon Marshall dropped a ton of balls last season...insane how many TD's he dropped..and they were right on the money. James Jones is a guy who could shine here and haul in 75-80 balls easy. Big, strong and fast. Go get him Ireland!

They already have an Early Doucet/James Jones-type on the roster. His name is Rishard Matthews.Something I came across. Not sure if anyone else caught this on twitter:https://twitter.com/ArmandoSalguero/status/240266413858775042
Final factoid on Vontae Davis trade: Jeff Ireland asked the Colts for T.Y Hilton or LaVon Brazill and was told no.

That is interesting, They must see him as a vital part of the offense the next few years. I think by week 4-5 he will be getting a decent amount of targets. At least a couple shots down the field.

:goodposting: - in Reno here so saw him play often and he was a favorite. Just read on rotoworld that dolphins are trying hard to trade for James jones. I know it's already out there but just another source saying it.

Good for Fuller too - didn't think that would happen. Any locals know if this a Tannyhill/Sherman move? Either way, Gig EM

Possible, but more likely they pick up whoever the Packers cut. None of the WR's outside of Bess are safe yet, lots of WR's will be hitting waivers and several of them are better prospects than the guys left.

Agreed. And the beauty of making this happen is that he comes in already knowing the offense, and ready to contribute right away. Wonder what it would take to get him though. 4th?

Bummer for Fuller but not shocking I assume:

I expect the 5-6WRs Miami keeps to change as teams make roster cuts and they also try and make a trade. I would not expect Hogan, Mathews, and Fuller to make it all season. I saw Fuller look OK in game 1, then not much the rest of the way.

Was Naanee released?

Totally disagree with you on Matthews. I saw some special things in the last two pre-season games that no other WR on this team can do. Even Bess who is a solid slot only WR. Matthews ran crisp routes....I mean NFL crisp. And he has great hands. This kid has a future and dare i say Ireland might have drafted a gem in round 7.

Christ he is due for one of those.....ya think?

Not sure if this RUMOR is floating around in one of the other threads this morning, but....

The Redskins are working on a trade that would send WR Anthony Armstrong to the Dolphins for RB Steve Slaton.

Related: Redskins

Source: Mike Jones on Twitter Aug 31 - 12:30 PM

There were quotes from one of the Dolphin execs earlier in the offseason saying they expected big things from him (Gates)

None of it really means anything right now. What matters is who's on the field when the games start.
So true. Buh-bye Clyde!

I see that as no help. What happened to James Jones in Green Bay? I'm thinking the Packers asked for too much. Philbin did not want to commit big bucks to Flynn and that looks like a wise move in hindsight so far, be interesting to see if Jones does make it down here.

Same here. Too bad his QB situation is this bad. he has some of the best hands I've seen from all of the rookies this preseason.

Bad? I don't know if you have watched Tannehill in the pre-season.....but he has looked solid for a rookie. He will be a good one. In the third pre-season game they dropped 9 balls. Nine!!! he has put the ball on the money.Ryan Tannehill is part of the solution....not the problem.

Now the rumor is that Miami and Washington are in trade talks that would send slaton to Washington for Anthony Armstrong...I don't think that's really goin to help will it? I don't know much about Armstrong but he doesn't strike me as a #1 WR type. Jane jones on the other hand maybe

I have no problem sending a Steve Slaton who will not contribute to this team as a #4 RB for a guy who can stretch the field. We have absolutely no deep threat. Armstrong was on our practice squad years ago. So we know this kid.James Jones is very much still in the works. I am sure we are making a strong push to try and pry him away from GB. We are not just making one move at WR.

Any thoughts or impressions on Hartline yesterday?

9/111/0, 12 targets, yes vs Oakland, but that's pretty darned good.

Previous week was 3 for 50 (0 TD), but on 8 targets (vs Bess' 3/43/0 on 6 TGTs).

I only saw parts of the game, but he almost had another TD in the first half that he easily could have held onto. I think Oakland is the worst team in the league, but Bush looks good and teams will be loading up to stop the run. Hartline should have some decent numbers.

Always has been just a matter of health with Hartline. Miami seems to be a graveyard for players with talent who never seem to really showcase it there for whatever reason (see Chris Chambers, Wes Welker, Davone Bess, and Hartline).

I've always liked his skill set (solid hands, solid route runner, deceptive deep speed) and actually grabbed him after last week in part because he was targeted 8 times. If Tannehill locks onto him every week, that alone makes him a worthwhile gamble.

Hartline is off to a bad start but I think he's the best of the group. I was listing to the Audible talking about Miami and they said he doesn't have deep speed which is bull. They said he was the fastest guy on the team and I seen interviews of him talking about running against Ted Ginn in hurdles in high school state finals and things like that. And lets not mention he led the team in ypc at 15.7 so who know what he can do with wr1-2 targets. After an appendectomy and a calf injury I'll pass on him, maybe later in the season I'll revisit this topic. Chad looked lost in NE. I'm sure he can still beat guy one on one but I doubt he will light it up as the focal point of the offense at this stage of his career.Bess is Bess. You already know what your getting from him.
Wish I listened to my own advice

As long as he hands the ball to Reggie Bush he'll be ok

Hartline: 9 targets, 1 catch.Any observations from the game?Thanks.
Just was not open enough. A few balls were not thrown well. But mostof the time he is covered well. The Phins WR situation is very week to week. Obviously a huge area of need going into the 2013 draft and free agency off season.

Saw the same things last year.

Maybe they keep getting him the ball going forward.

In all fairness though.....Tampa ignored him all night. Like he was not there. Atrocious coverage in Matthews tonight.

Frustrating that a coaching staff that can't see what they have.

$18,000,000.00 a year tied up in Wallace and Hartline. Great game for Mathews, no way this keeps up for long. Sell high.

If you start Mathews on a week to week basis you have bigger problems.

He's legit bro. Just hope QB play doesn't turn him into Andre Roberts.
What does that mean, he's legit? Because no one covered him in 3 receiver sets? Tell me what makes him legit. I love a good story, I root for the Dolphins, I like him but he isn't gonna be starting at the WR1 or WR2 spot, so how often do you think you can legitimately start Rishard Mathews the rest of the way this season?

Sow me the weekly box score…is it gonna look like he had tonight with not 1 RB not he Miami Dolphins netting any yards and the WR1 and WR2 pretty much shut down by superior DBs…how far do we go with this candy fantasy that we discovered a top 20 WR?

I'm just being realistic for everyone running to the waiver wire.
