There are various rules and regulations that prohibit NBA teams and players from talking to one another in regards to recruiting for a trade. But when that player has been given permission to talk to other teams, that all goes out the window. Such is the case with Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant, who have apparently become like teenage girls gabbing on the phone with Howard weighing where he wants to be traded to, if at all. Unfortuntely for Lakers fans, it doesn't sound like Bryant's doing a great job as a pitch man. From the Los Angeles Times:

Kobe Bryant has had at least one in-depth phone conversation with Howard recently, even discussing how Howard might fit in with the Lakers' scheme.

One person with knowledge of the conversation said Howard came away feeling as if he wouldn't be the Lakers' top option, for obvious reasons. It's Bryant's team.

Bryant scaring off Howard is pretty much the most Kobe thing ever. Yes, the Lakers are 10-5, but they've also looked very beatable this season, more like a "good team that isn't winning a title" than a true contender, never more so than against the Heat (without Dwyane Wade) Thursday night. And yet Bryant has to make sure Howard knows the pecking order. It's his team, and no Defensive Player of the Year, MVP candidate, most dominant center in the league is going to come in and take touches away from him. Bryant feels he's earned the right to determine his order in the pecking order, what with the rings and the Hall of Fame eventually and everything.

But this isn't how you bring a talent like Howard in. That's not how his makeup is geared. You have to try and get him excited. But if Bryant is good with his guys, this is a great effort to sabotage a trade, which the Times says is on the back burner, with both teams not having talked for weeks.

At least if Howard does push for and agree to a trade to the Lakers, he'll know for sure what he's getting into. It won't be Dwight's team. It will be Bryant's.<br class="Apple-interchange-newline">

So when Howard is dealt to LA, and signs the long term extension, will you come back praising Kobe's ability to convince top players to play with him?

This is my feeling as well. But I think the Lakers are going to be stuck playing the hand they were dealt. The team has no depth and no attractive player to move with Gasol or Bynum to get an upgrade. If they move them both, the front court depth is laughable at that point.

There is no way to make that happen, at least not with Odoms trade exception. It cannot be combined with another players salary to net someone with a larger salary.

You're probably right but his abilities are off the charts and he's still very very young. He has the ability to transform any team. If the Lakers want to do the usual Laker thing of bringing the best in, Rubio should be number one with a bullet.

Reddick and Nelson are decent players that I think can help the Lakers. That's why I want them. But I think an Orlando team getting rid of Howard would see it as a positive to dump their salaries. Anderson is a good player that I'm sure Orlando would like to keep. But if Orlando wants Gasol, they need to give Anderson. It would also make sense on their end since they play the same position. And the difference in salaries between Gasol and Anderson would allow Orlando to dump the salaries of Nelson and Reddick. Then Orlando can start Duhon with Morris backing up the point, Richardson with Wafer backing up, Ebanks/Turk, Gasol and Bynum and have the two first rounders.

Well we can look at his last 6, productive years, or 15 bad games. I'd choose to go with the former. He's not as bad as he's shown, and had a pretty good game last night. Laker fan thinking the Magic are going to trade JJ and Anderson in any Howard deal is completely laughable though.

Really my point here is I think the Lakers need to add Gasol to the Howard deal if they can get Anderson and bad contracts in return. I would happily take Chris Duhon (3 years, 11 mil) over Nelson (2 yrs, 15 mil). Turk is the one contract that it's hard to take. It's so ridiculous at 3 years, 35.8 mil. The only way the Lakers could do it is to include Artest and his 3 years, 21.7 mil. But wouldn't it be better for the teams to keep those players so they could amnesty them?

This is kinda why the Howard deal is basically a pipe dream. They don't have the pieces to get a deal that makes sense for either side. Lakers had the right idea with the Chris Paul trade. They need to use Gasol's value to get some quality young talent in their backcourt. Howard is the best center in the game but if you already have an advantage over 28 other teams at a position, is it really a great idea to spend all your remaining assets to get an advantage over that 29th team? The bulk of their problems are in the backcourt and that's where they should start.

Anyway I figure a Bynum/Gasol for Howard deal would look something like this. Maybe they could get the Rockets involved again to make things even more interesting if the Rockets still have some of the level of interest they had in Gasol back in December.

1) They dont get tons of cap room, considering they would get tons of cap room if they just let Deron leave as a free agent. They shed Deron and Petro for a total of 19.7 million, but get Martin for two years at 11.5. Martin at that price isn't bad, and if you are a rebuilding team you obviously need to spend the money somewhere, but to say that 8.2 million in cap relief is tons, is wrong.2) Pau Gasol is a very good basketball player. But the Rockets become a worse team with Gasol, compared to keeping Dragic, Lee, and Martin. Trading away those three leaves Houston with exactly two guards, 2 point guard, in Kyle Lowry and Johnny Flynn. They would be starting Lowry, with 3 forwards and a center. Their team would be awful.3) In the future, if you even have the slightest inkling that the Lakers are getting the better deal, there is a very good chance that your Kobe glasses have clouded your judgment and you should rethink the proposed deal.

1.They are shedding 3, 2 year deals for 3 1 year deals.2.They agreed to trade Martin, Dragic, and Scola for Pau about 5 weeks ago. This gives them a big man rotation of Pau,Scola, and Dalembert. Budinger and Terrence Williams can easily play the two, and are probably better suited there.3.The Rockets do this deal, the Lakers do this deal. My question was if its enough for the Nets.
