Saw in another thread where a lot of owners are so concerned with the weather in London that they are benching Brees this week. I remember the game last year was nasty, but Brees is likely the leading point scorer in a lot of leagues, and that makes him very hard to sit...even in bad conditions.

Who are you benching him for? I have Cambpell vs the Lions as an option but really don't know if I can make myself do that.

Weather shouldn't be anything like last year....field conditions should be better too. I have Shaub and Brees but I'm probably sticking with Brees.....he couldn't put up two stinkers in a row .... right????

I'm in the exact the situation as you in one league, with Brees and Campbell. The weather isn't that big of concern for me wrt Brees. I feel that Bush being out and the long flight are more significant factors. With Portis being a little banged up, I see the Skins passing more than they have been lately, and of course the Lions are giving up the most points against fantasy qb's. I'm starting to lean towards JC.

Bench Brees against the 32nd ranked pass defense in the league, which is also subsequently his former team that didn't want him back? I think not.

He's going to light SD up.

it's not so much the weather that I've been hearing is bad, it's the field conditions. But it's good to know I'm not the only one who thinks owners are crazy for benching him. Gotta stick with him unless it turns really bad.

Brees put up great #'s when Bush was hurt last year.. This doesn't affect him that much... I'm starting him.. Luckily my opponent has Rivers as his QB, so if the weather/field does mess things up, I just hope Brees comes out a little better.

Brees put up 300 yards & 2 TDs per game in four games without Bush or Deuce last year.

I just traded for Brees and I'm driving my new toy this weekend come hell or high water (hopefully the high water stays away). This is a MUST WIN for both teams so I'm pretty sure they'll be pulling out all the stops. As mentioned, Brees had great stats last season with Bush out. I'm a little more concerned by Colston's thumb and Shockey's injury than I am with Bush being out, but with that said, there's still alot of passing firepower on that offense (Moore, Meachem, Henderson, Stecker) and I think Brees will be just fine.

Thanks, I didn't know that. Looks like I'm going to roll with Brees. Forgot about the 'playing his old team angle' too.

... biggest reason to have Brees starting? first game vs. the Chargers since their less than cordial split .... revenge is always a dish best served cold, and i think Brees serves up a heaping plate of "eff you" to the Chargers ...

edit to add: missed grahamburns post in this thread, needless to say, i echo his sentiments

It's London, not Siberia.

Last year we had a freakish amount of rain the week the Giants and the Dolphins came - every day before the game and then incessantly for about six hours on agme day and during the game itself. It's very doubtful that happens this year - rain is forecast the night before, but it's expected to be bright and breezy on Sunday with just the odd shower. Talk of benching Brees is madness - people will happily be starting their studs in places like Chicago and Green Bay in the next couple of months and the weather in London will not approach the conditions you'll see there. I didn't hear too many calls for Cleveland or Pittsburgh to have their franchises removed after the blizzard bowl with Buffalo or the mud bowl v Miami last year.

Granted, the field itself does have a bit to prove after last year, and it's worth keeping an eye on the wind speeds (as it is everywhere as we get towards November), but Wembley were very unlucky to get the deluge they did last year and there aren't many grass venues in the NFL that would have held up to that much rain.

Going to stick with Brees myself over da Schaubster, even though Dodds has him ranked #2. Even tho the projections have them seperated by a decimal point, I am hoping Brees way outperforms his yardage guesstimate.

The field conditions are my biggest concern. My concern is that the field surface will be a mess even in temperate conditions acceptable for soccer matches (where skinny players in shorts and t shirts run on top of the grass) and rugby (where loose turf would actually be perceived as adding to the atmosphere of rugby scrums for the thick rugby players) but not for NFL action (where the defensive and offensive lines will just shred the trenches, the running backs will have trouble running the shredded middle of the field, and wideouts will have difficulty with making cuts on the outside). My concern is that the field conditions will make the offensive playcalling similar to a Tennessee vs. Baltimore game.I'm hoping I am wrong about the field surface in Wembley.

Why do people think Brees will seek "revenge" on the Chargers? He moved on and has had nothing but success on the field... arguably he moved into a better situation for his talent. And he got a huge contract. It's not like they released him, they just chose not to sign him to a huge contract when he was an injured UFA. It's also been more than 2 years since it happened.

Anyway, back to the thread topic, no way you bench Brees this week or any week that he is healthy.

Says Saints QB Drew Brees of playing his former team, "I'd be lying if I told you it was just another game."

From the same article, Brees said:
“Here’s the thing,” Brees said. “It worked out the way it was supposed to work out for everybody. I mean, I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I belong here, obviously he belongs there. He’s doing a great job. I feel like we’re doing a great job here. So I think it worked out for everybody.”
I'm sure he'd rather beat the Chargers than many other teams, but I don't see this as a factor that means he will play better.
