DT Jalen Carter, PHI (1 Viewer)

And Suh was a dominant NFL player...AND head case.

And it is important to note that Suh had a 5 season NCAA career (53 to 35 career NCAA games). After 3 seasons, which is where Carter is, the argument over who was better may favor Carter.
Suh was only a year older though. He just happened to hit college at a younger age than Carter so that gap sounds bigger than it is.

Literally just hit "save" on the ETA of my post above about that issue. We're thinking along similar lines. But it still isn't a slam dunk.

far better DT prospect than Carter
Not from what I have read. Think you are really underselling what people have been saying about Carter for two years
I think your memory on Suh is a misunderstanding. He almost (and probably should have) won the Heisman. As a DT on a 10-4 team.

Though Suh was a year older so that's a fair leveler.
My memory on Suh is just fine. Dude was a force of nature. We haven't seen one like him in the NCAA since. Not Donald, not Dareus. No one...IM(not so)HO.

Yeah i don’t want to besmirch Suh.

I think I would say I cannot think of a better prospect since him.

yeah that’s fair

I’ve posted Aaron Donald’s NFL.com Combine profile here before, it’s pretty hilarious. Tons of negatives & gives him a grade of like 5.90 (average backup or special teamer.)

Disagree. We hope he becomes Donald.

Suh makes an argument for the Mt. Rushmore of the NCAA for sure but, in the NFL

Donald>>>Suh

And Suh was/is great in the NFL but, not as good as Donald and he's a head case to boot.
For sure, I was excluding AD as an outcome because he's been too good. It's unfair to expect anyone, even a top 5 pick, to live up to AD.

To be fair, if we had read:

Has unmatched tensile strength, which along with his athleticism, will make him unblockable in entire games

We'd all have have been like, yeah, whatever.

A true outlier. There's a bunch of 290 lb DTs that have come along since then, only thing they had in common with him was the weight.

Detroit News beat writer Justin Rogers on how the Lions feel about Jalen Carter

Sounds like the Lions are out on Carter. Has nothing to do with red flags or his legal issues, formed this opinion before the misdemeanor warrant. It's just one guys opinion, he doesn't offer anything concrete or direct quotes, just his sense of the undercurrent of how the Lions view the prospect. Rogers called "questions about his football character."

What he is saying here tracks though. Campbell gave a presser at the Combine and said he'd interviewed about 35 players so far, and had about 15 more to go. Of those, "4 of them got it." For Holmes and MCDC, players who get their culture are passionate about ball, can break down a play and their role, have a passion to master their craft, etc. They've said it a thousand times, guy can have all the talent in the world but if he doesn't love ball then he's not a good fit.

Again, just one beat writers opinion, this isn't a leaked report and doesn't come from Allen Park.
My biggest take from that video is that somebody needs to buy Justin Rogers a comb.

yeah that's why I don't wear knit beanies

jealous of the bald guys who don't have to worry about it

I think that red ink masterpiece on the wall behind him does a really great job at drawing attention to his messy hair, while also subtly pulling the ginger highlights.
Reminds me of my childhood photo where I was standing in front of the tv. It looked like the rabbit ears were sticking out of my head. 📺

Setting aside the Pro Day and driving stuff, sell me on Cater. Why was his production so low? Just part of the Georgia's scheme? I look at the other "transcendent" college DTs like Suh, Fairley, AD and I see a lot more sacks and TFLs. I see the highlights and no doubt he has an awesome combo of strength, size, quickness and athleticism. I just wonder why it didn't result in more production. Any thoughts?

His pass rush win rate in 2022 was 18.9% which led all Power 5 DI. Sacks alone can be a bit of a fluky stat.

If the rate is good then maybe we have to come back to how many snaps he’s playing and why? Just UGA being insanely deep or is it also conditioning?

Yeah I mentioned this in my short write-up in the Lions thread. He played less than 400 snaps the last two years, less than 300 in 2020. The first two DI off the board last year were both Georgia players. That's not all of the explain but just raw numbers here are the pass rushing snaps for other 3-techs:
  • Jalen Carter 21.0 /g
  • Bryan Bresee 20.3 /g (*missed a couple games due to injury or family tragedy + three partial games when he wasn't 100%)
  • Calijah Kancey 25.0 /g (30.6 2021)
  • Mazi Smith 28.1 /g (yeah he'll play 1-tech in the pros but Michigan deployed him at 3-tech way more often - 185 NT 400 DT)
  • Moro Ojomo 17.2 (not a good comp bc he's literally a run specialist, only 281 lbs but his technique is a freaking clinic; could see him playing 5-tech bc he'd be a great edge setter)
  • Keeanu Benton 18.9 /g
  • Jaquelin Roy 29.0/g (played a lot more 1-tech than Mazi)
The rotation is a real thing but I don't think that's the answer, the other 3-techs were just playing more on run downs and maybe that's why Carter doesn't have a ton of TFL.

IDK if I could CFB find snap counts for past years where we might be able to compare more productive 3-techs with Carter, it wasn't easy finding this data for the most recent year.

Hard to believe he drops all the way to 18, but that's where Mike Tannenbaum has Carter going:

I can say with confidence, if one of the top QBs like Richardson or Levis are available at 10. The Eagles will find a partner to trade that pick and move down. I saw a mock where the Vikings moved up to 10 for a 2023 1st, 2023 3rd and 2024 1st to take Levis. That's a no-brainer trade for Philly.

you made it that far?

after I saw Hooker at 5th overall I stopped reading

Lions are doing their due diligence on Carter.

Dan Campbell on Jalen Carter: "We talked to a teammate of his the other day and, man, he told us some things we didn't know. That nobody probably would've known. It was like, 'Oh, that's interesting.'" Asked if it was good or bad: "It's interesting."

Someone told Tannebaum he needs some hot takes for his mock, and he ran with it. Pretty sure this dude is a clown.

He was a big star on Reddit, Twitter & YT yesterday. Just trying to raise the brand level (33rd Team.) Maybe he’s hoping Barstool will buy them out?

He was successful in generating discourse on twitter so I am sure it got the engagement and clicks that he wanted.

His teammates rave about him. Could have been the story about giving a walk on his meals.

Maybe but that would be public info already, not sure why Campbell would think it was some kind of inside scoop.

Yeah if there is one team that probably should pass on Carter, it's the Raiders.
Let me tell you something, if the Raiders pass on this guy and he is drafted with the next pick, history tells us that he will probably turn into Reggie White, but even a nicer guy.

So no, I'm not passing on the alpha DT for that.

I think it comes down to your take on this. I give him the benefit of the doubt, you are doubting. I guess you can read into it either way.

Hoping that the Raiders are out for reasons that make football sense. Maybe they saw a lack of effort watching him on every play. It would be a bad look to take him after the Ruggs disaster but the NFL has its share of not so nice guys and the fans get over it if the player performs.

I am not really doubting anything here. Just saying why would DC say it was something probably nobody else would know if it was about buying the walk-on food? Even we know about that!

This guy is an idiot. Stay far away from the Bears, please.

@AdamSchefter

Georgia DT Jalen Carter is visiting the Bears today. It is his second visit, with him already having visited the Eagles. Carter’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said he is declining visit requests for any team drafting outside the top 10 picks. “I’m confident Jalen will go in the top 10,” Rosenhaus said. “He’s a good person, a family man, loves football and is a generational talent.”

Carter was invited and plans to attend the NFL Draft later this month in Kansas City.

We're not doing visits with any teams that might trade up for him is an interesting strategy.
So idiotic after what the guy has been connected to recently. Terrible pro day. The car crash stuff. You'd think a normal person would show some humility and be on their best behavior. Guess not. Just double down on the arrogance

I expected better from Rosenhaus... throughout the entire process. He should have made sure Carter was better prepared for his pro day too IMO. An agent is supposed to do more than just negotiate and review contracts.

More when they are starting out trying to make a name for themselves

Recent comments from Poles make me think they will go in another direction. He wants a "safe" pick and a "good locker room" guy. He also mentioned how this team isn't one player away from winning a championship. If Carter is there at #9 I think it creates a good opportunity to trade down again which is what I think the Bears would like to do.
