Is anyone concerned that Luck will turn into a captain checkdown in the NFL? Tonight it seemed like he checked down a ton and only went downfield when someone was wide open because of the damage Stanford was doing on the ground. On 3rd and 13 in OT with a true freshman kicker who had just missed twice he went straight to the 1 yard crossing route right into a zone that had no chance of gaining more than a yard or two.

ETA: His YPA is actually surprisingly low given how high his completion percentage is (and how well Stanford runs the ball), and the only recent prospect that panned out that he compared to favorably in yards per completion was Matt Ryan.

Just saw that too. In my main $ dynasty league, keep 3 and can't keep rounds 1-3. I would definitely not hesitate, other things being equal, to spend a 4th on him and burn that 4th every year I get to keep him. Love the size advantage he brings, amongst speed and route running.

Luck doesn't have much to work with. His receivers suck so it almost forces him to checkdown more than usual. He's showed the ability to hit the deep throw when it's given to him. Give him a WR like Blackmon and he's thrive. When his biggest weapon was/is his TE's it limits what he's able to do down the field. Add to that the injury problems that plagued his go-to WR Chris Owusu and it complicates things even further. Tonight, Stanford went with an overly conservative style of offence which got worse when they lost Fleener but I think that is more of an indictment on the rest of the team instead of Luck. I wouldn't be worried about it.

Not sure where you're getting your stats from, cause Luck's YPA is actually pretty damn good, particularly when you consider he's in a pro style offense and doesn't have particularly good WRs to throw to. Andrew Luck had a 8.50 YPA this year (his lowest ever), the past 2 years he had a YPA above 8.9. Matt Barkley had a 7.9 YPA this year despite having arguably the best WR combo in the country to throw to. And in Matt Ryan's 2 seasons where he started at BC his YPA was never even above 7.0, so Luck's numbers aren't even close to Ryan's.

Thanks for posting this. I guess he figures one serious injury is enough and I feel if he thinks he's at least a 2nd rd pick he will declare. I personally think the scouts will return a 2nd or 3rd grade for him, only because of the injury.

Pre-injury he was clear cut #2 in my rankings and could've challenged for #1.Now I don't think he beats out David Wilson/Lamar Miller, but he could put up some crazy numbers at the combine too.

I never thought Knile Davis would declare this year after that injury...if he did, that would be great for dynasty rookie drafters. This is turning into a great class.

Edit: Interesting that Tyler Wilson submitted paperwork to be evaluated. It would be a HUGE shock if he declared...but then, it was a huge shock that Gabbert did last year at his age (although a little less shocking once Luck had decided to stay).

I would be extremely excited if Davis declared. He was the #2 guy in my rankings before the injury and hopefully without any games under his belt this year he'll be undervalued in rookie drafts in 2012. If I could get him in the second half of the 1st round in a rookie draft I'd take him and run. Davis is a great RB who's had the entire year to recover from the injury and should be good to go next year.

Jeffrey is a completely different player. He gets by on his ability to play football. He has great hands, he is a great competitor, he is fluid - football comes natural to him. He is a fiery competitor - he is a great blocker and, while subjective, I would call him a winner. Baldwin is very fluid in the air and that is about it. He is much more mechanical than Jeffrey, in my opinion. Baldwin gave up at times at GT and I questioned his mental toughness. The NFL is quickly becoming a game of mismatches. Aaron Hernandez was a TE in name only, often this season; Gronkowski too. Jeffrey (Baldwin too, IMO) will create mismatches in the NFL. He is too big/strong/fluid to leave on an island with most NFL corners. The team that drafts him will take advantage of that. The guy put up 1,500 yards in the SEC. For reference, AJ Green never reached 1,000.

That is reasonable. I think he has to be behind Floyd and Blackmon at this point, as they both project to be future #1 WRs. They are the only two that I comfortable saying that about, however. I will feel a lot better after the NFL draft when we see what NFL teams think. But, I would put Jeffrey at 3-4 right now, with Wright.

I rank Wright over Jeffery because I think he's more well rounded. I think Wright is a better route runner and is more explosive and obviously faster. Jeffery relies more on his size and lets the plays come to him while I think because of Wright's speed he creates plays. Jeffery has as much, if not more, talent than anybody else at the WR position in the draft but I still don't trust him and think he's also got the biggest chance of busting than anybody. He did a lot to raise his stock yesterday before he got ejected but it wouldn't be enough for me to vault him into the top 3. I think he definitely moved ahead of guys like Sanu and Jones just because his upside is so high and because he's probably one of the top 1 or 2 guys in the red zone but I'm still firmly locked into Blackmon, Floyd, Wright as the top three. One of my biggest fears with Jeffery is that he would put the work in leading up to the draft and deceive people with an improved look and better performances until he got paid and his possible natural tendancy to slack off would take over again heading into next season.

I think the combine will help too. That's when you see a players REAL size. Plus measurables, which I count as broad jump, vertical, 3 cone, short shuttle as all more important than the 40 yard dash.

I actually think BMW was the better prospect - I remember thinking he was well worth a top 10 pick and think Jeffrey is a late 1st/early 2nd guy.But, I think the comparision is unfair, once we start using it to call Jeffrey lazy. They are two different indivduals - Alshon is either too fat and lazy for the NFL or he's not. It is easy to look at one picture and jump to conclusions, but not wise, in my opinion. And yes, all of this started with one picture. If NFL scouts tell Alshon he needs to cut weight, and he doesn't/can't, then I'll worry. If stories come about him being lazy in the weight room, I will worry. But the guys suits up every game day, wants to win, and doesn't seem lazy on the field. He is one of the better/willing blocking WRs and I don't see him take plays off.

His stats make him look like a text-book possession WR. 10 yard average. In 115 recpetions this year, his long was 32 yards.

My biggest issue is that WRs are almost exclusively the most lean, physically built athletes on the field. A few years ago a couple of GMs (or ex-gm analyst) thought that BMW was a naturally big guy who would always have weight issues. Except for 2010, whoever was correct in terms of NFL impact. I am not as down as some of the people here, but jeffrey as a late 1st or early 2nd NFL draft type makes in terms of risk/reward sense.

I watch a lot of Carolina's bowl game. Jeffery is big and strong with pretty decent receiving skills. He's not very quick though and he doesn't seem like a very smart guy. Character doesn't mean much for me, but it does mean something. I don't know if this guy will put in the work. I rate him a little bit below Baldwin. To me he's more of a 2nd round NFL pick than an obvious first round lock. For rookie draft purposes I certainly wouldn't use a top 6 pick on him. From an athletic standpoint I'd say Mike Williams (USC) is the best recent comparison.

As for Luck, he did everything possible to win that game last night. It's laughable to criticize his performance when he goes 27 of 31 for 340+ yards. As others have mentioned, Stanford's receivers are very spotty. Ty Montgomery is talented and fast, but a true freshman who's still learning on the job. The team's best deep threat, Chris Owusu, has been sidelined indefinitely by concussions. Griff Whalen is a decent college player, but very limited on deep routes because he lacks size and speed. Stanford has three very good TEs, but you don't generally count on your TEs to run deep routes (and Coby Fleener, the team's fastest TE, left the game with an injury). Basically, there are no legitimate downfield receiving threats on the team at the moment. Hence why the gameplan involved shorter passes. Luck executed it to perfection. He was on the money all night and he converted several clutch third downs.

Being an overweight WR is a sign of laziness IMO. Not just WR's either - I wanted nothing to do with Jamarcus Russell when he took his shirt off at the combine.I was fan of BMW and overlooked his weight issues and his 40 time (4.6) but I'll be more careful about guys' weight in the future. Now if Jeffery commits himself, gets under 220 and run a 4.5 I'll be a little more positive about him.

Given the competition at RB in this draft it makes sense but it's disappointing.
