Each State's Best IPA Beer - Value, Drinkability, Taste and Artwork (1 Viewer)

I'd nominate:

1. Minnesota - Surly Furious
2. Wisconsin - New Glarus Spotted Cow
3. Arizona - The Shop Church Music
4. Delaware - Dogfishhead 90 minute

Lots to pick from in AZ. Tower Station, Hop Knot, etc. but I'll roll Church Music.
90-minute is an all time favorite but at 9%, more or less, it’s far from a session beer.

Yeah, we used to be able to import that, but that's over a decade ago when they stopped selling overseas because they had more than enough domestic demand. It's a great beer for sure

In Maryland, more specially in Baltimore there is Speed Wobbles from Key Brewing.
Very smooth IPA and at 4.6% it's a great session beer. Can usually pick it up for $11.99 a six pack
Good choice. My go-to IPA around here right now is Astrodon by Peabody Heights

Cushwa out toward western Maryland also has a couple very good beers, I like Face Chop which is a bit of a hazy

I’ve drifted away from IPAs over the years. Still like one occasionally but the wear out my palate.

For Indiana, Daredevil Liftoff and 3 Floyds Alpha King and Zombie Dust are probably best known.

Peter King wrote very enthusiastically about Sun King Brewery in Indianapolis. Always wanted to sample their wares.

Sun King does some nice stuff but I’m not sure I’ve had their ipa.

For CA I think Pliny or Blind Pig are reasonable choices given how iconic they and the brewery are, but I think there are a lot of breweries putting out better stuff these days.

My personal favorite is Alvarado Street out of Monterey. Not quite as accessible as Russian River, but will probably be on par within the next few years. All of their other styles are top notch too, especially their sours. Cold Pressed is their standard hazy IPA while Mai Tai is their west coast style. Both are solid.

My local brewery, Altamont Beer Works also makes a really good IPA that is good in all circumstances called Maui Waui which I have found in stores in Nevada and SoCal.

There’s almost too many to list in CA. You could bring Beechwood, Pizza Port and a host of others into the conversation. Racer 5, etc.

Michigan for session most popular is Founders All Day though it’s not my favorite. I’m still a 2 Hearted guy though it’s kind of strong for putting back a bunch of them. M43 by Old Nation is a great hazy.
I’ll second the M43. Two-hearted, can’t drink anymore

Technically it’s a pale ale, but I’ll nominate Three Floyd’s Zombie Dust. It’s my go-to, along with M43, and Wisconsin’s New Glarius Spotted Cow and Moon Man(anotherAPA), and Minn’s Surly Furious.

What turned you off Two Hearted? Is it because it rhymes with Who Farted? I think that's one of the best IPAs in the country.

Norm's Raggedy comes in 2nd for me. Griffin Claw is top tier.
Fyi there’s a brewery outside Columbus named Hoof Hearted

I know, the state is robust with good offerings. But I'm looking for the IPA that is found almost anywhere and isn't going to cost more than $20ish for a 12. That's not easy to do, but that's the criteria here.

I think I'm going to shock the California crowd. Have not seen mine mentioned yet. Were I to rank this one, it's going to be right below my Arizona choice and that's not a knock. The Arizona IPA I'm picking is glorious for all the reasons I need it to be.

:lmao:

That is hilarious!

I'll see if I can jump GM's pick with one from AZ, Citrazona from Barrio Brewing in Tucson 6.6% and hopped with Citra, Simcoe, and Mosaic. Not totally sessionable but close.

For FL, I'm going to lean into the sessionable part and nominate the sessionable and light version of Jai Lai, Jai Low. Honorable mention goes to my favorite APA, Reef Donkey.

Love a good IPA, especially in hot weather. The more bitter it is, the better.

Here in North Carolina, my favorite local is Pernicious IPA from Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville. A bit over 7% so it's not exactly session-able, but it's not crazy either. Just have 2 instead of 3.

I tried a bunch of lower alcohol session IPA's, and most of them are little lacking in the taste department. If you drink an All Day IPA after a Pernicious, you know it.

This is precisely why I started this thread - INFO! Now I know what to order when I'm in North Carolina.
A lot of folks stays away from Wicked Weed after being bought by AB Inbev. I still like them but like some of their other stuff a lot more (sours and some stouts).
I hear you, but I still think freak of nature is great

Like a couple of others have said, I've drifted away from IPAs. I don't know if my body changed or my taste buds or what, but the really hoppy brews don't agree with me.

That said, I'm nipping Flying Dog's The Truth Imperial IPA (8.7%) right now. It's on the less-hoppy side and is pretty good.

In Delaware, the widely available Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA is solid. Dependable, goes down easy - basically the Najee Harris of beers.
And 90 minute is the Saquon Barkley.
I've heard that's a doozy.
Not really, the 120 is the one that will get you
Yeah IIRC that’s like a 17% ABV.
Good Lord. When I was homebrewing, I got a Belgian Tripel up to about 15%. I tried to ramp it up even higher on the next batch, but it lost some flavor and I kept subsequent batches to around 12 or 13%.

Excuse me sir, we'd prefer to list beers that don't meet any of your criteria.

I think many here confused session with succession, as in the succession of their liver into shock.

For California, I guess it has to be something from Russian River but here in Tennessee, I can easily get Stone's IPA and that's my go to.
Yeah, Pliny the Elder would be my California vote.

I fly in/out of Santa Rosa when I go up to my parents, and I always make it a point to get to the airport a little early for my flights back home as the Santa Rosa airport always has Pliny on tap. Couple of those before the flight and it's a great way to end the visit up to help the parents out around their house.

CA

Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’

Think I'm going so surprise with my pick for CA. I've got one I L O V E love.
I am not an IPA guy and it gets frustrating going to various breweries and they have 10 beers on tap and 9 are IPA's. Ugh.

Anyway there are a few I like and my favorite by far for CA is Pliny the Elder. My daughter went to Sonoma St so every time we went for a visit I ended up at the Russian River Brewery and had to take a box home. Not a fan of most IPA's but really like Pliny.

I also went to Sonoma State - actually grew up in Rohnert Park from 7th grade until I moved to Southern California after graduating college and getting married - bummed that they are cutting all of the sports programs and about 20 majors.

Russian River will now ship within California, so you can get Pliny the Elder and their other offerings sent to you. During Covid they did a Pliny the Younger bottling and you could order that for shipping - you would get a mixed 12 pack with I believe 3 Youngers. I'll need to see if they still do that, it's getting to be about the time of year that they release it.

I'd nominate:

1. Minnesota - Surly Furious
Without question.

For California, I'll throw this out there... Hangar 24's Betty IPA
I don't even think Furious is Surly's best IPA. It is very very good, but Todd the Axe Man is better (I guess Todd got the boot and it is just Axe Man now).

But also, there are better IPA's in the twin cities anyway. Barrel Theory and Blackstack and Falling Knife all make excellent IPAs

Barrel Theory has good stuff.

If I'm understanding GM's request though - where it's a reasonably priced, decently available IPA (with Four Peaks Hop Knot as his ideal example) - Surly Furious seems like the right Minnesota answer.

Not a hater by any means. It's also a good value that you can find. I just think of their great sours or their Milk n Cookies before their IPAs.

An IPA like Surf Wax from Burial is great and approachable, but you never see it.

Minnesota - Surly Furious (5)
Delaware - Dogfish Head 90 Minute (5)

.... and I'm spent. That was a trip down memory lane. Overwhelmingly, my highest rated IPAs came from California, Arizona, or Colorado with a big nod to California. CA had to have 25 beers are so in my top 100 IPAs ranked.

Yup, you've got the right idea. That's what I'm identifying. I know there are better IPAs available in Arizona, but in my 11 days down there Hop Knot was the clear-cut winner. More tomorrow.

Yeah with that criteria I'll modify my original post for these clear-cut session IPAs for the following states:

Arizona - Tower Station
Minnesota - Surly Furious
Pennsylvania - Victory HopDevil
California - Pliny the Elder
Delaware - Dogfish Head 60
Illinois - Goose Island IPA
Colorado - Sierra Nevada Celebration or Beer Camp
Michigan - Bell's Two Hearted
Washington - Space Dust

Gun to my head, if I had to drink just one IPA for the rest of my life, I'm torn between Two Hearted and Pliny the Elder. Probably would lean the latter based on taste but man I have a ton of good memories of times with the former in my hand as it's served on my favorite golf course, we had a case at my bachelor party, I ordered it for the first time at a trendy bar in law school on a date with you know who, etc.

ETA: That Duet Alpine was also so damn good and I could see drinking several.

I wouldn't serve Ninkasi beers to my worst enemy. Their beers are gross.
Apparently I really liked the Tricerahops (or I was feeling mighty good when I entered it into my app). I did have some other Oregon IPAs right behind it.

It's probably the hoppiest beer ever made by mankind. It'll get you wasted but it tastes like tar and tobacco spit.
Trying to recall what you sent me in that beer package last NBA season when the Kings outperformed the Trailblazers. I liked many of them.

Do you ever get tired of being right all the time?

I'd personally drop a few of the >s though.

California deserves 3 regions for this. Pliny The Younger is the OG. Russian River it is.
Then I thought it should be a specifically "California" IPA, and to me that's Ballast Point's Grapefruit Sculpin.
#3? Dozens to advocate for.
