Seems like for something so easily contained with proper protocols there sure are a lot of people getting it. 60 doctors, nurses and healthcare workers dead from this outbreak is a rather large number for the total cases so far, isn't it?Maybe in Phillippines too:Likely in London.

Frankly, if I were given the choice of the survivor's blood vs. the experimental serum, I would choose option #1 too. My guess is the experimental serum might not be working as well on Nancy Writebol when Tekmira issued a disclaimer that she did not take their drug.I heard he refused the serum so that the other American infected could receive it. Regardless, he's a good man for going over there and putting himself at risk. Let's hope he makes a full recovery.
The pattern for past outbreaks was health workers were the first to go then other people who knew and came into contact with the victims. Why? Do you have expertise in hemorrhagic fevers, developing world economies, or are you part of EIS?People dying in airports is a scary turn of events. Nothing has happened so far in the past 3-4 days that make me worry for me or my family (even the Tennessee doctor returning to ).
But I'm still convinced that if this isn't contained quickly, it can ravage the 3rd world.
What's worse is what this could do with the advent of social media. Can you imagine the reaction of people to the Spanish Flu if twitter were around? Some sort of mass panic could easily begin to happen.
That's true to some extent but it's more likely the case when the doctors/healthcare workers don't immediately know what they're dealing with. We're talking people who are being infected knowing full well what they were going to deal with. The pattern for past outbreaks was health workers were the first to go then other people who knew and came into contact with the victims. Yeah, but a similar incident already happened earlier in July when Patrick Sawyer travelled trough several busy airports before he collapsed in the airport in Lago, Liberia. He contracted Ebola from taking care of a sister who also died from the same disease. Obama was briefed on the situation but again we were told "it was unlikely he would have infected anyone". I think the media downplayed the fact that he was an American citizen.People dying in airports is a scary turn of events. People were a little "over confident" because the disease could "only be transmitted through bodily fluids.". You will hear the media repeat this. What is scary to me is another straint of Ebola which was airborne. It was discovered in monkeys shipped from the Philippines (via Malaysian Airline) to laboratories in Viginia, NYC and Texas. The CDC had to killed all the monkeys the both times when this virus was found and we were lucky that no humans were infected. That's true to some extent but it's more likely the case when the doctors/healthcare workers don't immediately know what they're dealing with. It basically passed from pigs to monkeys in an experimental setting through large droplets of saliva/mucus. Not actually airborne like other viruses.Kobinger took pains to point out that the airborne transmission process is not like that of influenza. In the case of human Ebola outbreaks in Africa, he said: "The reality is that they are contained and they remain local, if it was really an airborne virus like influenza is it would spread all over the place, and that's not happening."

I have been on flights that were almost that bad. This is true for the current outbreak in West Africa. If a victim coughs or sneezes, the virus can land on surfaces and survive outside a body for several days. You have to search for Ebola Reston instead. This strain was first found in monkeys but later discovered in pigs in 2008 and a pig farmer in 2009. It is not deadly like the Zaire strain in W. Africa but can become more dangerous for humans as it infects more types of animals.Google "Ebola airborne."I did not do an in-depth search but here is something from Stanford University.http://web.stanford.edu/group/virus/filo/ebor.htmlLink?Preferably not to Alex Jones' radio show.People were a little "over confident" because the disease could "only be transmitted through bodily fluids.". Nearly 900 people have died from Ebola in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Two Americans working in Liberia contracted the disease but were given an experimental serum that appears to have halted the deadly virus. Dr. Kent Brantly is being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, while missionary Nancy Writebol is expected to arrive in the U.S. on Tuesday.
Border patrol agents posted at major international airports are on the lookout for potentially sick travelers. Ebola symptoms include fever, sore throat, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhea, according to the World Health Organization. The incurable disease is considered fatal in 90% of cases.
Supposedely strains have been as high as a 90% mortality rate in the past. This current strain is at roughly 60% in Africa. Talking heads predicted those receiving treatment at a modern faciliity (I.e., US hospital) would most likely be right around a 50% mortality rate, if not a little less.linkSomeone just checked themself into a NY hospital who had recently been to W Africa and is showing symptoms of extreme fever conditions and is being quarantined.
