Can anyone who watched last weeks DEN/NO game tell me what happened to Eddie Royal? Did they just not use him as much? Was he blanketed all day? What happened? From his stat-line it looks like he caught a few screens that never materialized.

Cutler has an eye for one receiver and one receiver only. If anyone else ever catches the ball it's because they ran in front of Marshall's route.

denver opened up a big lead. saints clawed their way back. time of possession heavily favors the saints, especially when you consider the saints threw the ball 48 times.

The way that Cutler is concentrating on Marshall, as a defensive coordinator I'd double team him with the two best corners that I had and try to make

Cutler look to other receivers. This would require going nickel most of the game, but Denver's running attack has not been too strong.

I watched quite a bit of that game this weekend. There's no doubt he's second fiddle to Marshall. Marshall is probably the best fantasy WR to own in the entire league at this point however.

Here's a breakdown of targets to date: (Week 1, 2, 3)

Marshall: S, 20, 11 = 31

Royal: 11, 7, 7 = 25

Scheffler: 2, 10, 4 = 16

Stokley: 5, 6, 4 = 15

Royal is the #2 receiving option on one of the most explosive offenses in the league. That makes him a good bet to score in any week. However, he doesn't get the consistently high targets of some of the top WRs in the game. That will make his weekly totals inconsistent, just like every other #2/3 WR in the league. l expect him to finish somewhere between the #20-#30 WR by year end. Last years average for which was about 950/5, although Royal may get more points from TDs and less yardage than that. 800/7 maybe?

Nice post.
No kidding. That's great stuff. Thanks!

If we're looking at target ratios, we should probably just count the last two weeks. The first week when Marshall wasn't there was different-in-kind from what the Broncos offense will look like going forward.Marshall: 31Royal: 14Scheffler: 14Stokley: 10ETA: I do think Royal has plenty of value. He's a darn good receiver in a very explosive passing offense.

I would look to use Royal when DEN plays a team that SHOULD contain Marshall. I don't think DEN has played any decent defense yet.

Then again is there any team that can contain Marshall? I'm totally on board that the Cutler+Marshall combo is going to be lethal for years to come. They both have unbelievable skills!

FYI-Living in New Mexico I am blessed with watching EVERY DAL and DEN game. Everybody here is either a Broncos or a Cowboys fan. Doesn't help that I'm a Vikes fan. :goodposting:

I think Royal will continue to be come more relevant over the coming weeks. Teams will double and triple Marshall, so Cutler will have to go to his 2nd option, which is Royal.

Royal has a lot of talent. He's obviously second fiddle right now but Marshall could get himself suspended at basically any point. Royal showed a ton in that first game, so he's got the talent. He can read zones and find soft spots. I agree with the poster above that stated that game situations and opponents have somewhat dictated Royals fading into the background.

He's certainly a viable WR3 in almost any format. I wouldn't put him too much higher than that because of his inconsistency though at this point.

I would try to see what you can get for Royal from the Marshall owner (He may want to handcuff Brandon and offer something good). Week #2 it was looking like a Dud before the last minute TD & 2 point conversion saved his day and week #3 was disappointing. Cutler has a history of sticking with one WR.

JMHO

Updated for week 4:Marshall: DNP, 20, 11, 13 = 44Royal: 11, 7, 7, 12 = 37Stokely: 5, 6, 4, 10 = 25Scheffler: 2, 10, 4, 2 = 18Since Marshall's returnMarshall 44Royal 26Stokely 20Scheffler 16I am starting to think that week 2 is going to prove to be an outlier. Cutler just cannot target Marshall 20x a game. It cost him a huge pick last week vs the Chiefs. Scheffler was running open down the middle of the field, and Cutler chose to throw it across his body to a double covered Marshall. The throw was a duck and got picked. I am not saying Marshall is going to tank. Just that the last two weeks may be a better representation of the distribution between the WRs.Marshall 24Royal 19Stokely 14

Royal is averaging a shade under 9 targets/game in that potent offense since Marshall's return. I think that's must start material right there.

Great info here. :hophead:

Kitrick Taylor's fine work here helped prevent me from making a poor trade of Royal last week. Thank you, sir. I'm rolling with Fast Eddie in the three hole until the bitter end.

If nothing else, Royal's worth a ton if Marshall ever misses time (suspension, injury, whatever).

He proved that in Week 1.
He proved that in ONE week. Anyone can have one good week. I'm not dropping him, but I'm not 100% sold either.
Very true. However having watched Royal in that game, and in the 3 games since I am personally of the belief that the "one game" being referenced is a valid barometer of Royal's value if Marshall went down. Not saying he gets 150 and a TD every week, but that he will get a ton of targets and has the skill set and the supporting cast to make the most of the targets. Even with Marshall eating up the Lion's share of the Tragets, Royal has shown value as a WR2/3. Tough to be "100% sold" on any rookie after just 4 games - but all signs are extremely encouraging with this particular one IMO.
