@Joe Bryant

Would you be open to hosting a single election thread where topics can be discussed in a respectful manner? I'd hope the moderators will be quick to suspend posters who aren't engaging in a productive way.

The mundane topics here are fine, but the internet is also a place where people can come together to discuss their differences and understand where each other is coming from. I'd at least like to give it a chance under the condition that we remove people who aren't productive to the conversation. This is a major milestone in our American timeline and I find it discouraging that we can't have adult conversations about the future of our country.

I think there are a fair number of us that are still very anti any discussion of politics.

If you get your way maybe open the political forum with only a single unlocked thread just so that it isn't here. Even the ukraine thread is too much IMO.

Left Verse right, right verse left is just tearing this country apart, but if politics wasn't so big of deal we could all have normal conversations, since we are all the same people.

Fock politics.

Is there a scarcity of sites on the internet to post political views?

Do we need the FFA to fill that void in our lives?
I think the politics board was definitely a net negative for these boards in terms of civility but it was quite something to me to see how quickly the (short lived) debate thread blew up on here. There is obviously is a very real appetite for it among people here and part of me does wonder if having the occasional political thread might bring more people back to these forums more regularly. The trade off in loss of civility probably isn't worth that for Joe/the moderators, like I say, I was just surprised how quickly/how many people jumped right back in when given the opportunity

I enjoy the wide swath this site offers. Other sites tend to lean too far in one direction or the other. This site also has a pretty educated user base which I find more enlightening to engage with.

I don't disagree with you, Max. But I got the sense closing down the Political Forum was not a rash decision. Joe foreshadowed it for months and let us know he was contemplating it.

His space, he gets to make those calls. With busy season around the corner probably not a priority for him. I know if I made my living off a hobby I would be acutely aware to keep the main thing the main thing.

In another site I frequent, we have a political subforum, but it is hidden. By invitation only; no partisans allowed. The discourse is civil.

Things devolve pretty quickly at FBGs. Not just politics, could be the long term value of a post hype WR or how faithful a movie/show was to it's original source to BBQ methods. Love the community but they do have a collective propensity to ruin almost anything if the mood strikes.

For England? That might fly

It's election day in the U.K.

The year 2024 is notable for the large number of elections being held worldwide: at least 97 countries, home to nearly half of the global population, will vote, including eight of the world's 10 most populous nations – Bangladesh, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, and the United States.

Around 2 billion voters – approximately a quarter of the world's population – are eligible to vote in elections this year.

I get it, if it's a no, it's a no. Joe's site to run how he sees fit.

I just hate how we as a community have to stick our heads in the sand over such an important topic.

a) Yes, it would bring more people back to the forums.
b) No, those are not the people we want to bring back to the forums.

But wasn't life more civil / better before we all weighed in on every single topic, every single day? And I've been hearing for 20 years now how <current issue> is the most important ever.

An election thread will quickly devolve into "how could you vote for x when he/she did/said y". It's predictable and exhausting.

I miss the politics thread, but I don’t.

It was a time suck, and there were so many bad faith arguments. But it was actually active (good and bad) and I learned a decent amount.

Unfortunately IMO ffa is pretty boring (YMMV, I’m sure many disagree), beyond the wnba play by play by @pollardsvision

When I moved into my neighborhood three years ago, I made it a point to introduce myself to my neighbors. One of them immediately made a snide comment about the general politics of where I moved from compared to here. I mean, before I even knew the man's name, he threw out the political comment to try and see where I stood. That basically told me this guy had zero to offer. That was the last time we spoke - I want nothing to do with people like that.

Go to The Shark Pool. Visit the "Is it ever O.K. to start an inferior lineup?".

Your quick clean answer is - train wreck.
I chalk that up to the slow news season. There is zero groundbreaking fantasy content right now.
I was shocked at the "slow news season " comment until it was followed up with the "fantasy content" comment. Then it made sense.
I stayed out of that debate about the inferior lineup mess. :tfp:

My next door neighbor told me he knew where I stood politically because I flew an American flag.

Interesting....my flag is flying right now......

Yea I saw an old friend last night for the first time in a while and within 30 seconds she was telling me how difficult the economy is and other bullet points to where I was like ok cool hey nice seeing you again and that was it.

I agree on Ukraine, and I appreciate the posters that keep bringing news links but this is a broader topic that needs discussed.

-I feel strongly some folks can handle an intelligent discussion and agree like 1 open thread in the Political forum would perhaps solve some of it.
As an example, I sort a jokingly put up 2 beers to vote on Thrusday Night...Reef Donkey vs Fat Orange Cat, legit beers and from what I understand a couple posters just couldn't handle a little fun and made sure to have that thread locked and that seems to be the real issue

-On another note this forum has a large following of Left/Left-Middle and I hate to say it but some rather extreme or Far Left views that when broadcast here sound more like people who have been watching MSDNC for too long

I think the reality that one candidate has pulled away comfortably in every swing state when just a week or two ago we were not having that discussion...let's take it easy on everyone, OK? It's an awful lot to digest in a week and I might remind the folks who post here, yeah I'm talking to YOU! Fact is most of us DO NOT have it that rough and while I don't like paying $8 for a dozen eggs, still I can afford it and I'm not rich. But the economy for most of us that aee invested and that number is JUST 1 in 4 int he USA, but for those of us that invest, it's not a terrible time right now, it's NOT!

The country is not broken but we do have a lack of skilled labor. The jobs that are there for the taking, most folks don't qualify for one reason or another and I'm not talking to the FBGs specific but regular folks that we never see or hear from in here. People that actually work for a living

I applaud the effort to get this moving, I would love to take part in it.

Thank you but I think it's best we do not.

I miss the political talk too. But it's just not something we're able to do here. We tried many times and we proved repeatedly we couldn't do it. So sad to say, the answer is no.

The good news is there's tons of political talk in other forums and online.
