Elements of Rock Era Music draft - Categories firming up, Sign Up here (1 Viewer)

Northern Voice said:
Yeah that's all we need for this one I think since we didn't label it a "mixtape" draft, if everyone wants to post their own of their finished draft at the end, they can do that. It might be fun to play with grouping together the categories but that again might make more sense to do at the end, especially with songs already being moved from one category to another.

You sure you don't want to jump in on the draft, KP?
I thought about it, but I seriously don't know WTF the production categories are and 1/2 the structure ones I have no idea what to do about either.

I have two picks, and if possible, they can be slid in somewhere.

Backing Vocal: Nancy Wilson "Heartless"

It's an energetic song, and Nancy is underneath Ann for most of it. Nancy really stands out when Ann sings the title in two different ways: first she belts out the word in two crisp syllables, and then elongates it in the following line. Nancy stays with her perfectly.

Keyboard (Electric): Greg Hawkes--The Cars "Let's Go"

Hawkes is all over this song. It sounds almost as if they mixed it at the same level as Orr's vocal. It seems at first that Hawkes is all over the place, but subsequent listens show that he follows tightly Orr's bass and Easton's guitar, with a lot of flare thrown in.

Kinda odd when there's so many people on mid-day autoskip, but alright.

I have to admit to not getting the timing down of the draft. The distance between my picks has varied from two full days to just a couple of hours. I've lost track.
It's tough, we have 10 people in the draft, and I'd say 5 are checking in very regularly and the other 5 more sporadically/night picking. I'm not complaining but it does make it a bit disjointed, with flurries of picks (then skips) in the day and then catching back up at night. So far it's working out okay I think.

I thought of another possible future draft idea today too :bag:  - Sports themed music draft (aka fantasy arena DJ time).

Things like:

Walk-Up Music (Baseball)

Team Intro Music

Goal Song

Fight Entrance Song (UFC/WWE)

Fight happened/ended song

Penalty song

In-game music (basketball)

Pre-Game Pump up song

Late in game pump up song

Organ music

Victory song

Loss song

Referee taunting song

Song that mentions a team

Song that mentions a player

Song associated with a team (for the soccer :nerd:  s)

..and so on.

4.02 - Backing Vocals - The Rolling Stones (feat. Merry Clayton) - Gimme Shelter

Song could also work for intro or harmonica but Merry Clayton's backing vocals elevate a great song into the Pantheon of rock n roll.  It just wouldn't have been the same if Keef was singing the "Rape, Murder, It's just a shot away" part.
Have you heard the story behind these backing vocals?  I heard an interview with her a year or two ago on NPR...she was like 9 months pregnant and on bedrest and got the call from her studio that they wanted her to do background vocals.   She did it in like 1 take at 2 AM and left the studio and gave birth like a few days later.  She met the Stones for like 1 minute before doing the backing track and then leaving, something crazy like that.

cool - i've known him since his partner in Berklee's comp class slept on the same Back Bay attic floor as me and about 20 broke musicians. A band he played with opened for the Eagles in '73 and we watched them tear up their trailer when another local band blew their doors off, bands i managed were often billed with him when he was with Marty Mull and he helped some of them get studio time at Ocasek's Synchrosound when he was with the Cars. soooo cool he gets on a 'greatest' list!

5.06 - Kanye West - "Dark Fantasy" (Vocal - Choir)

Alright this is a bit of a copout because I think it's a sample of a chorus, but #### it.  The opening track to maybe the greatest rap album of the past decade.  Heavy on the choir/gospel vibe throughout.  Also bonus for creating the forever "you ain't got no ####in Yeezy?" quote (followed by Frank Ocean's "you ain't got no Jodeci", et al).

I have so many for these, it's not even funny.

My favorite real walk-up song? Manny Ramirez using the unedited version of Good Times (I Get High) by Styles P during his walk-up to the plate at Fenway one fine sunny afternoon. Jaws were dropped. Apologies ensued. All was restored, but never the same.

Great song....haven't heard it in years.

Clayton and a number of other backing vocalists (including Darlene Love and the smoking hot Claudia Lennear) were the subject of the excellent 2013 documentary 20 Feet From Stardom.  Great singing and stories from some interesting artists who've spent their careers mostly in the background.

Mrs. Eephus and I went to the premiere at the SF International Film Festival.  Clayton and Tata Vega did a Q&A after the screening and Merry sang a few bars of Gimme Shelter a capella.  She's still got the pipes.

To follow-up on this, the Bills used to let Leodis McKelvin have his own kick return music.  They used to play the first 45-seconds or so of Young Jeezy's "Get Allot" (NSFW - language) while coming out of commercial and he would go nuts on the field trying to pump up the crowd.  Always got the crowd super hyped.

Layering is a tough one, whose idea was it  . My initial thought was a "wall of sound song", then I moved to layered vocals.

This one has layers of both guitars and vocals and is one of U2'sbest songs. It's also on the first CD I ever bought.

6.04 - "Zoo Station" - U2 - layering

6.05 - fka Twigs - "Glass and Patron" (Autotune/processed vocals)

@Northern Voice>sup

First minute of the video is a snippet from another song, this song actually starts at 1:01.

This is such a deep category considering my music wheelhouse, but I'm going with this one because I feel it really enhances the song rather than simply, say, pitch-correcting her voice.  Song starts slow with her singing over minimal background music and then becomes increasingly ####ed up over the course of the song, to the point where her voice is sped up significantly and sounds like a robotic chipmunk (will you #### me while I stare at the sun?), or has a white-noise static feeling to it, or has an echo, or...

Having children is interesting, especially when they start to get into music. My little girl (now 9) is on her way along that path. Interesting that her two older brothers (13, 12) aren't into it yet, although they are playing instruments in school. Here is a cover that I started to like when I found it while looking for the Lorde song, (which I never really liked) for a Spotify playlist for her.

6.06 - Walk Off The Earth - Royals ('World' Instrument - Didgeridoo)

Was thinking of putting this in the 'Non-Traditional' category for the use of the silverware, but I'm not sure if they actually are used for the sound, or are just for the video.

I wanted to add some fun pop/rock stuff and start rounding out my vocal category. Neither of these songs are masterpieces, but they use their elements to great effect and are spot on examples of how make a hit pop song without going being overly redundant.

5.x "Ripe for Love" Young Guv (2015)  AUTOTUNE/PROCESSED VOCAL

6.x "Pompeii" Bastille (2013)  BACKING VOCALS

By 'Vocal Effect' do you mean 'AutoTune?'

Make-up pick:

4.07: "Fire on High", Electric Light Orchestra (Strings)

Studio version on Face the Music

Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale on cello, Mik Kaminski on violin. I always thought of the strings in this one serving as "Fire's" 'vocals' (except, of course, for the famous rumor-spawning backward masked vocals at the beginning).

.
With that pick, we are complete up to the 4th Round. We are missing the following picks...

5.04 - Doug B
5.09 - Eephus
6.02 - Eephus
6.07 - Doug B
6.08 - JML

and we will be all caught up.

Skip me if I get up again this evening - going to the Bills game, probably going to be a disaster (not for Jets fans).
I heard you on the radio today (Rich Eisen, I think.) They talked about you being on the list for HOF next year! And they also thought the fact that Mr. Smith's number is being retired might help the crowd and Bills, and maybe beat the lowly Jets!

Have fun tonite!!

6.02  Either World or Non-Traditional Instrument (marimba)  - The Psychedelic Furs - Love My Way

Binky the Doormat could tell you that Todd Rundgren is the guy playing the marimba.

It's been Mrs. Eephus' ringtone for years so I've heard the first four bars of the intro more than most people but it's still great.

I'm not sure what is expected by non-traditional instrument but I think a marimba would qualify for either category.

Playlist updated.  Some great music being drafted, and a bit of stuff that I hadn't heard before, which is why I do/follow these things.

I have been a Yes fan since 90125, so when I first saw the 'Falsetto' category my first thought was 'Jon Anderson;' simple. Then I looked at the definition of falsetto, and it's a person singing above their normal vocal range. So this knocks Jon Anderson out of the running, since he just sings in a high range. Therefore I had to dig a little. And I ended up with...

7.05 - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson (Falsetto)

Mr. Jackson had a huge range, and for most of this one, he was singing way up there.
