Hard to see how this does anything other than move Republican House members even further to the right.House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) lost to tea party primary challenger David Brat in the Republican primary on Tuesday.
The race was called at about 8:05 p.m. Cantor lost to primary challenger David Brat.
Who is Brat? He is an economics professor at Randolph-Macon College. Brat was regarded as a long shot candidate but Cantor's campaign still spent over $1 million on advertising to stress that the top House Republican is a "strong conservative."
Cantor's campaign also sent out mailers arguing that he's largely responsible for blocking immigration reform, signs, perhaps, that Brat seemed like more of a threat than he appeared publicly.
It still won't unless Cantor runs a write-in campaign and splits the R vote. The nutjob will win easily. Hilarious.District hasn't had a Democrat for Rep. since 1971
I guess this means the Tea Party isn't repudiated.Tim is going to erupt.
Can't remember who wrote it (maybe the guys at Brookings?), but there's a pretty sane argument making the rounds that we're in for an extended period of divided government with Congressional Republicans doing very well in midterm elections -- where the intensity gap between the GOP and Dems is the biggest -- but, as you point out, that the imperative to move rightward and satisfy the intensely conservative off-cycle voters will make them unelectable at the Presidential level. It's fascinating because this type of passion in off years is going to push the GOP further right which in turn is going to completely #### them in presidential years.
I don't know anything about Brat....what has he done to be labeled as a nutjob? It still won't unless Cantor runs a write-in campaign and splits the R vote. The nutjob will win easily. Hilarious.District hasn't had a Democrat for Rep. since 1971
He's not a liberal. It's one of the go-to words for people who don't subscribe to the progressive agenda.I don't know anything about Brat....what has he done to be labeled as a nutjob? It still won't unless Cantor runs a write-in campaign and splits the R vote. Good. We already have Democrats, we don't need Democrat-Lite. Not sure why so many are so afraid of a true two party system. And if things keep fracturing maybe even 3 or 4 parties. That would be fine too. People the globe over want a time out on unfettered immigration. Politicians ignore that at their peril (see Cantor, Eric). It's fascinating because this type of passion in off years is going to push the GOP further right which in turn is going to completely #### them in presidential years.
I guess it's because he's been labeled a tea party candidate. He is an economics professor and congress could definitely use a class or two on economics. He's not a liberal. Please do explain. Because I know immigration to the U.S. is actually quite, well, fetterred. Curious what country you are talking about here, since you state people the globe over.Good. Rabid anti-immigration advocate, so much so that he attacked Cantor - with evident success - for the weak sauce Republican "alternative" to the DREAM Act.
Did I mention, supported by the Tea Party?
I remember one of my first college classes, fall of 1992, two months before Clinton got elected. I read a whole book on how the balance of power would almost certainly ensure a Republican President with a split or Dem Congress for the foreseeable future.
It probably won't last all that long since these things have a way of morphing quicker than people expect, but it certainly seems to be set up for something like that today.
If you say so. He actually managed to stay below the radar on some of his political views while focusing on being the anti-Cantor, but yes, it's pretty safe to say that someone who mounts a successful primary challenge to the #2 U.S. Representative in his party's leadership FROM THE RIGHT is out of step with the mainstream and thus, a nutjob. In other words, he disagrees with your views in politics, so he's a nutjob.Supported by the Tea Party.I don't know anything about Brat....what has he done to be labeled as a nutjob? It still won't unless Cantor runs a write-in campaign and splits the R vote.
