So Tim comes in here and says very similar things that others have said and you stroke him like a kitten while smashing the others heads with a sledge hammer...
Nobody "stroked" me. And the difference is I didn't ignore the evidence and presume it's a lifestyle, and therefore worthy of condemnation, based on nothing but my own ignorance and personal prejudices.
You hinted it is a disorder, that they freak you out and that you are skeptical...And you got" maybe it is where you live and the lack of contact with trans genders"... I'm pretty sure all I have said that I think Bruce is in it for personal gain and that if he truly wants us to believe he is serious he should have his wang removed.. and I've been beat to hell and back.
It's crazy how everyone is treating Tim differently than you when the only thing that separates you guys is that Tim's single post on the subject completely differed from your dozens of posts on the subject in both tone and content.

Umm, this is not correct.

1. I didn't "hint" that it is a disorder. I noted that my understanding (which may or may not be correct) is that in previous years it was regarded as a disorder, but that apparently it is not now. I don't know why it was considered a disorder then and I don't know why it is not considered a disorder now. I don't understand the science behind this, and don't pretend that I either have that knowledge or that my lack of understanding is somehow superior to those who understand it.

2. I did say they freak me out. I noted that this was an emotional, not an intellectual response.

3. I never said I was skeptical of transgenders. I've stated that I was skeptical of Jenner's personal motives, based on my (limited) knowledge of how Bruce Jenner was presented on the Kardashian show, which I have had the misfortune to watch from time to time.

4. I can't comment on how you have been treated. I haven't read enough of your posts on this subject. However, there are a few people who have "contributed" to this thread, notably Eminence (of course) and some dude named TJ, who IMO have expressed nothing but ignorant contempt and prejudice, and they deserve to be taken down a peg and have been. But I have no idea if you fall into that category. Hopefully not.

Tim wrote something thoughtful, and while I don't agree with all of it, he's aware that he doesn't know a lot about the topic at hand and he also seems aware that his discomfort is his issue and not theirs.

Meanwhile, between bouts of offended indignance, you wrote these things:

So to recap... Bruce Jenner won the Espy Courage Award because he is a drag queen
I know you don't have to be a woman to be a p****..but don't you have to have a p**** to be a woman?
Things I have learned ...Caitlyn Bruce Jenner still has a schlong
But it is courageous for a 60 year old + man who was losing his celebritry to decide he wants t*ts and a p###y.
Being rich and wanting to know what it is like to have a p***y is not Courageous.
And worst of all your offenses, is that you have Eminence liking the majority of your posts in this thread. Think about that.

You are a child. Grow up.

So my delivery is a little blue collar for you soft touches. Did I call him a freak or condemn the transgender population. I have specifically only referenced Bruce Jenner and his so called change.

Not at all. A person, or people deserve negativity when they DO negative things. Let the insults fly at people that have done crap.

People don't deserve negativity for being what they are. Even if what they are gives you negative feelings, keep them to yourself.

I don't really get the whole bit where people throw Jenner in with the Kardashians. She married into the family, and subsequently divorced out of it. She got famous by actually doing something impressive rather than the usual "famous for being famous" thing that people usually hate about the Kardashians.

If you want to hate her for getting a deal for her own reality show, that at least makes some sense. Lots of people appear on reality shows these days, but if you hate the whole idea of reality TV, so be it. But hating because you don't like some of the members of her former family? That's just not logical at all.

Hey guys...just wanted to jump back in here based on some earlier discussions about deviant and abnormal.

Since the meaning of English words are essentially being re-written, how do I refer to an overweight person without being mean or critical? Or is it still safe to assume that overweight people aren't offended by being called "overweight" because they are actually "overweight"?

I get that calling them fat is probably mean. And with so many overweight people in America nowadays, I don't think it is fair to suggest that they are abnormal or deviants, right?

Should I go with "obese" instead? I am not cool with the "morbidly obese" description as that is pretty messed up and comes off sounding bad, I think.

In all honesty, I am not even sure if calling them overweight is fair. If they love their body and feel comfortable in their own skin and think they are just fine the way they are, isn't my calling them overweight projecting my own values onto them in some way?

Why is the ideal weight range determined by doctors the arbiter of what constitutes whether or not someone is overweight or normal within proper weight range?

If someone can have a penis and still be a she, or be born white and still be actually black, why would someone who is pushing three hundy be overweight if it works for them?

Thanks for helping me figure this out. I want to be open-minded, but my brain is still locked in the neandethal 50s when words meant certain things. Appreciate it.

It only begs that question if you're totally irrational about the situation. Jenner already had plenty of media attention, hadn't previously seemed all that interested in getting more of it (again, Bruce was a Kardashian by marriage, not by blood), and if she was she could have picked lots of other ways of getting that wouldn't have created tension and complications for family and friends and made her the object of hatred and ridicule from tens of millions of people.

I have no issue with anyone who doesn't like Jenner because they think he's just doing this to promote a show and make money.

I do have issues with anyone who can't keep their feelings that Jenner, or any transgender, repulses them, and needs to express that with obviously derogatory rhetoric. If they just kept those feelings to themselves, or at least attempted to use less derogatory language to express their feelings, then I wouldn't have issue with them.

So if you think Jenner is looking for attention, let the insults rip... but there's no need to call him, or transgenders "freaks" to rip into Jenner for being an attention whore.

To what extent? Does this include psychopaths like Dahmer? We medicate all sorts of abnormal brain chemistry, yet we decide to accept others. This is not nearly as black and white as some want to make it out to be.

You're going to compare someone who is transgender with a serial killer? Why? It's clear that nobody who hurts others or society is going to be accepted, it is in fact very black and white.

Soldiers hurt others and are lionized.

Bipolar, schizophrenic, the list of psychologies we medicate is rather extensive. We, as a society, enforce certain parameters as normal.

Pretty sure Dahmer did some negative things.
And even if he hadn't- like say we were talking about a pedophile who hadn't yet acted on that impulse- it's fairly easy to draw a distinction between "abnormal brain chemistry" that might lead someone to harm someone else (or themselves) and a harmless condition like gender dysphoria.

Dahmer is an ### for what he did.

If someone is born with the exact same brain wiring as Dahmer, we'd have to invoke pre-crime to vilify him before he did something wrong. Although I believe doctors can commit people prior to them doing something wrong if they believe the person is a real danger to themselves or society. But I'm pretty sure most people in society aren't doctors, so without him doing something wrong, they should keep their negative feelings about him to themselves, or share them with authorities if they sense he's dangerous.

Dear god.

Seriously, anybody who has bothered to post in this thread should listen to the Laura Jane Grace episode of WTF I linked. It's pretty insightful concerning some of the the internal and external issues trans people deal with. Or at least what this one person deals with.

Some have decided that transgender is an abnormality that they deem acceptable. It's not for any principled reason - its ad hoc.

Autism is an abnormality and is deemed acceptable. Everyone has some sort of abnormality. No one is perfectly normal.

19 pages and we still haven't agreed to disagree yet? Come on guys, I thought we were all smarter than to try to change the moral opinions of strangers over the internet.

My favorite color is green. Every other color is inferior and you're a bigot if you disagree.

I'm late to this thread, but how does one 'feel like a woman'? It confusing to me that a transgender guy goes automatically to wearing dresses and makeup when that's a recent cultural development, not a genetic one. I fully supportive of people doing whatever it is that makes them happy but I'd still don't get it.
If you're really interested, someone who transitions to being a woman starts dressing like a woman and adopting any body language that is appropriate because those are the identifiers in our culture--they already feel like a woman, so once they transition and are ready to live that life outwardly, they want to look like a woman and be seen as a woman. Pretty simple, really. Its not a genetic need to wear a dress, it's a drive to be recognized as the same gender they identify with.

Men and women in every culture adhere to certain social norms of their gender, from mannerisms to clothing, because that's how they fit in. Same with transgendered individuals.
Bruce is a guy...end of story
Not that simple. Only a simpleton reduces a complex issue to a binary level.

Umm, this is not correct.1. I didn't "hint" that it is a disorder. I noted that my understanding (which may or may not be correct) is that in previous years it was regarded as a disorder, but that apparently it is not now. I don't know why it was considered a disorder then and I don't know why it is not considered a disorder now.

Couldn't resist. This must be Opposite Day because a) I understand the issues so I'm not ignorant and b) how exactly was I taken down a peg? I missed that part. I think I did an admirable job getting under people's skin. Love it when I'm able to do that.

And yes, I do have prejudice, but it's not the people. It's the whole notion of transgender in general. The people are a byproduct of that.

You could take everything you've said, replace "transgenders" with "interracial marriage", and the argument wouldn't skip a beat. And many people thought that way about interracial marriage 50 years ago. They are old relics now. Enjoy your future.

I don't understand the science behind this, and don't pretend that I either have that knowledge or that my lack of understanding is somehow superior to those who understand it.

2. I did say they freak me out. I noted that this was an emotional, not an intellectual response.

Oh thank god you're back, the thread was really spiraling out of control.

Oh.... I will. Enjoy yours as well. We all have to live the life we make for ourselves. I'm more than comfortable with mine. You wrongfully surmise that transgender will be mainstream. It won't. It crosses a line and as much you want to argue I'll be a relic, I won't be. I'll always be in the majority on this one. A point of clarity though - I want to note that I already accept transgender and their right to all things allowed by law and they be extended the same common courtesies as anyone else.

And I really was planning on staying away, but I did check back and found I was being called out so blame lil timmy.
