Explain to Me: Gaps (1 Viewer)

I am a life long fan of the game. Though growing up I was interested in many sports, football holds almost a complete monopoly of my interest in sports. Though I love the sport dearly and spend a lot of time around here (though I do not post much in the shark pool), my DVR is cluttered with NFL related shows, and know much about the game- I never played it myself in an organized fashion. So, I think there are a few things that I do not have a full or complete grasp of and would like to better understand them. I am calling on the collective knowledge of the shark pool to explain them not just in a 101 course but on to upper division levels of understanding.

This thread is dealing with "Gaps".

Anyone feel free to add on or correct me but my understanding of gaps is what you call the spaces between linemen on the defensive and offensive lines. The interior or A gaps are usually surrounding the nose tackle or center and the B gaps are in between the guard and tackle and so on. It's a bit fuzzy for me beyond that.

A gap - between the Center and Guard

B gap - between the Guard and Tackle

C gap - between the Tackle and TE (or just outside the T if no TE)

D gap - outside the TE

Jene Bremel did a series on IDP that had a TON of great information about gaps as part of understanding defensive players' roles. By far the best thing I've read (though it's got a ton of detail). I'd link to it if I weren't busy eating my pancake/bacon sandwich.

this is an awesome link and since it is breakfast time right now someone should get you a free breakfast for posting it one time i had bacon between two pancakes sort of like a sandwhich and it was pretty awesome frankly so maybe try that and keep on taking it to the bank like the brohan you are inside
did you put syrup on it because i prefer my bacon to be salty and my pancakes to be sugary but no mixing gotta keep them separate but equal for sure brohan

If you're a reader and want a reference to keep, try Pat Kirwin's "Take your eye off the ball". Not only is there a lot of info and current jargon you will hear on any sports-talk station you may listen to, you could also call him and actually ask him a question any day of the week.
