**Fake Scarcity Mixtape Draft #1: Tuesday picks 12 & 4PM EDT (1 Viewer)

12.12 Headhunter - Front 242

International - Belgium

Because Floppo said so.
wait... front 242? I meant herbie hancock. that song sucks.
Allright, I'll have to go a different direction then. Will redo my 12.12 pick shortly.
One of the Spotify versions of this song is off a compilation called "TSOB-The Sound of Belgium". Oddly, one of the tracks on the album is by Au Pairs who have no connection to Belgium that I can find other than the band broke up after singer Lesley Woods no-showed for a concert in Brussels.

And yeah, the song kind of sucks.

ETA: I may have to redefine kind of sucks after listening to the Geronimo song.

ETA: It's kind of catchy by the third chorus or so.
Problem solved.

And if you don't like sleigh bells, well, shove it. :D

For the 12th round, and in honor of the R40 tour (Going next week!!!), I am picking a song from Rush.

Tom Sawyer - Drum Solo - Original Song
Thank you. The way the Internet has kind of schmidt all over Rush has always rankled. Comes off as ingenuine from a lot of people: "C'mon, man ... all the cool kids HATE Rush. They sell records and stuff."
We came so close to a Rush-free music draft

11.7 - More Than A Feeling - Boston - Top 5

Hit #5 in 1976. Got to see them in the 80s on their 'Third Stages' tour, in Boston no less ;) . Man, were they great. What a voice Brad Delp (RIP) had.
Have good memories of an old friend learning guitar on this song back in high school. Yes, Delp was the man on vox ... dude should be much beter known.

I always wonder what would have happened if they hadn't had their fight with their record company and been able to release albums between 1978 and 1986.

See post 1189. I kept Morphine Girl cause the OCMS tune won't drag into my playlist. I like that song better anyway.

OK, so now for my 12th rounder. Please don't tell me that I overlooked this sibling band being picked, cause I was kind of counting on this to finish out:

12.18 - "Something About You", Level 42 (Nuclear Family)

Boon Gould on guitar, brother Phil on drums. The incomporable Mark King on bass. Love the intro on the 4:27 album cut, but can't seem to find it on youtube.

Arena acts were getting pushed aside by the early 80s. They still had fans, but a lot of record companies treated them like yesterday's news. Still, I think the usicianship of a band like Boston would've kept them afloat, though probably more as balladeers than rockers. Kind of like a male version of Heart.

This is who I was expecting when I clicked Gr00vus' Front 242 link. The bass player is outstanding.

We missed out on some very cheesy videos

Found this acoustic version a couple years ago. Like it more than the original.

This draft was too short. Let's do another.
I want to enjoy the mixes for a while but I thought of some future category ideas.

covers: both the original and covering artists come off the board

relationships: a spin off of siblings category for John & Yoko & Exene

cities: like countries and states but for NFL or MLB cities.

dirty words: songs containing lyrics on the FBG censored list

NV's degrees of separation draft sounds fun as well, although an early round snipe would be brutal.
Maybe a live tracks category?
Acoustic?
Another thought is songs from a Movie Soundtrack.

Thanks for running the draft Eephus--a lot of new discoveries as usual.

Marco's Scarcity Spotify mix
Your mix has seven of the twelve tracks grayed out. I think Spotify defaults to add songs to playlists from the music library on your hard disk instead of the online version.
Yeah. I noticed that. What do I need to do to correct that?

I have all 12 songs on my hard drive so I'm not sure why only those 7 are grayed out. All 12 songs play consecutively when I run the mix on my Spotify itself. Any ideas?

12.xx Elgar's Cello Conerto in E Minor (2nd movement) Jacqueline Du Pres, London Philharmonic Conducted by Daniel Barenboim

So much to choose here (cello solo), international (England for all the English people involved here), but I choose to spotlight the real star, Jacqueline Du Pres. She was one of the most genius musicians in the history recorded classical music. By the time she was 17, she was already considered among the best soloist in the world. At the age of 20, she recorded an overlooked cello concerto written by Edward Elgar at the end of WW1. Elgar's career and music had long gone out of fashion when he wrote the concerto. It was a dusty unappreciated relic that had a disastrous London premiere and after 45 years seemed doomed to obscurity. Du Pres performance of the piece was so powerful that it helped turn the Elgar concerto into one of the most widely played pieces of cello music in the modern repertoire.

By 1971, her playing had irreversibly declined due MS. By 1973 her career was over as she became physically unable to play the cello any longer. She passed away the age of 42. While the link here isn't the most legendary performance that initially established the Elgar Cello Concerto, it is a beautiful live version of Jacqueline being conducted by her husband.

This is great - very Jose Felicianoesque. I love the original song too.

Tom Sawyer - Drum Solo -

Do it and I'll track you down and make you listen to an endless loop of the Front 242 songs I didn't consider taking for this draft.

For our next one, how about a category for fictitious families: band names with "Brother(s)", "Sister(s)", "Family", "Mother(s)", "Father(s)", etc. in them? Doesn't matter if the members are actually from the same family or not.

Since 60% of the songs I drafted are not playable in an exported Spotify playlist I made a zip file instead:

Only three songs of yours aren't lit up on my spotify. I wonder if you could change that in your settings area on your account.
Looks like my local files were populating onto Spotify. When I turn those off only about half the songs show up. Oh well.
When I view it using the Spotify fat client, there are three songs missing (Doleful Lions, Generationals, Super Furries). When I access using the browser the playlist is seven short.

Songs about fictional charactersSongs about historical figures

Songs that reference other songs

Songs about killing/murder

Songs based on a true story

Songs that tell a fictional story.

12.6 "Hong Kong" - Gorillaz (solo instrument - gu-zheng)

This version was recorded live at the Manchester Opera House. It features Zeng Zhen playing the gu-zheng, sort of a Chinese zither. Her playing is just lovely.

I have no idea how to Spotify- I've never been to the site. I'm pretty sure all of my songs will be there except the specific Gorillaz piece I want.

I've chosen this order:

Tuesday Afternoon - Moody Blues

96 Tears - Question Mark and the Mysterians

Nothin' Better to Do - LeAnn Rimes

Spoonman - Soundgarden

I'm Shakin' - Jack White

Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden

Hey I Don't Know - Kongos

I Gotsta Get Paid - ZZ Top

My Sharona - The Knack

Just Give Me A Reason - Pink

Con Te Partiro - Andrea Bocelli

Hong Kong - The Gorillaz

You can register for free on Spotify. I have the free version. I'll make your Spotify playlist for you and post it on here.
