Fantasy Rules question (1 Viewer)

Was the bad exchange between Peterson and Jackson a forced fumble? What is the exact definition of a forced fumble?
I believe a forced fumble refers to defensive players. This fumble was given to Jackson but I don't think a defensive player was credited with a force.

Our league uses MFL. I lost my game by less than a point. My opponent had the Vikings D which was credited with 1 point for a forced fumble (FF). However I don't see a forced fumble in the stats nor do I remember one during the game.

Do I have a beef or am I missing something?

Devin Hester fumbled a kick return. The ball went out of bounds. If your league counts forced fumbles rather than fumble recoveries, then that's probably the play.

I also use MFL, and I started the MIN D. I didn't get credit for a forced fumble. In fact, if you go through the play-by-play on NFL.com you will not see a fumble recovery by MIN. The only fumble recovered by the other team all game was when MIN fumbled, and it was recovered by CHI. The other fumble was by CHI, but since it was recovered by CHI, MIN should not get credit for a forced fumble. Unless your league awards points to defenses for forced fumbles, even when the D doesn't recover it, which would be pretty dumb. My first question would be, were you playing against the league commissioner? Is it possible that someone logged into MFL and gave MIN a point for a forced fumble, hoping you wouldn't notice?

I wasn't playing the commish and I am 99.99% sure there is no foul play involved. I thought I would check in here first before bringing it to the league's attention.

Well, there were fumbles by CHI. It's just that MIN never recovered them. You have to check your league rules on this. Does your league award pts for forced fumbles when the D doesn't recover them?

I always thought that D gets a forced fumble whenever the opposing O fumbles... regardless of who recovers. You have a fumble (or fmble recovered) category as well, no?

No points for fumble recoveries. Just 1 point for forced fumbles. Kind of odd but that is the way the rules are set.

4-6-MIN 40 (2:29) 5-C.Kluwe punts 60 yards to CHI 0, Center-46-C.Loeffler. 23-D.Hester to CHI 5 for 5 yards (51-B.Leber). FUMBLES (51-B.Leber), ball out of bounds at CHI 3.

This was a play in the 1st qtr. Looks like Leber is credited with forced fumble. This was a special teams play and that may be why it doesn't show up on defensive stats. But, if your league combines Def/ST, Minn would be credited with the forced fumble.

My league only uses fumble recoveries. Forced fumble is too much of a grey area. If an offensive player fumbles without being touched, is it "forced"? What if that player was barely touched and fumbled? Figuring out what is considered a forced fumble is like deciding what is and what isn't an error in baseball.

Thanks for this info. Not sure if MFL scores the 1 point for forced fumble on a special teams play. I am guessing this has to be the case though.

The box score credits Hester with 1 fumble and 1 fumble lost, but the Gamebook only credits him with 1 fumble. Meanwhile, the Gamebook credits lester with 1 forced fumble.

Yeah it credits Leber with a forced fumble on the special teams play. That must be it.Sickening.

Thanks for the help guys.

A forced fumble is when you cause the other team to fumble, whether or not you recover it (they could recover it or it could go out of bounds).

Some examples of fumbles for which there is no corresponding forced fumble:

-Bad snap from center to QB (usually noted as "aborted" in play by play)

-Bad handoff from QB to RB (as long as no defender was involved in breaking up the handoff)

-Muffed punt (note: Devin Hester's play wasn't a muffed punt. He got the ball and then MIN forced the fumble)

When ball hits the receiving team in a kickoff and is recovered by the kicking team, this isn't a fumble, forced or otherwise since it was a live ball to begin with.
