Friend of ours.

Tony Houck was making tacos. His wife had just left for a quick trip to the grocery store. Minutes later, Houck was face to face with a strange man in his kitchen. The criminal had kicked his way in through the front door.

"I turn, and there was a guy standing in my face. A split second later he smacked me. We went at it. We went at it hard," said Houck.
Freaking my wife out.

Door kick-ins are way more common than folks think. Probably smart to have a plan to protect against em.

You guys really are a bunch of jerks. I can't imagine what your reaction would be if he was making Granpa Bill's BBQ Cheeseburger Veggie and Chip Dip.

1. How common are they really?

2. How common do folks think they are?
1) On average there are 100 burglary related homicides each year. So your chances of being a victim of one is exceedingly small.

2) Way over the actual number I would guess.

#### never would've happened if his wife would've remembered the sour cream on the first trip.

Somebody would have to be crazy to kick in the front door while people were home.

Is it weird that I think about what I'd do in situations like that on a daily basis?

I do the same thing...I've done it since I was a kid. I look around the room and think of what I'd grab for a weapon, where I'd retreat to if I had to, what I'd try and do to the intruder...

Who said anything about homicides?

I'm suggesting a couple simple precautions to protect against door being kicked in in robbery attempt for those in areas where this might be a issue. Bottom line is your deadbolt locks are pretty much ineffective as burglars don't pick locks to break into houses. It's all about kick-ins now. Your door might as well be unlocked to a thief if a deadbolt is your only security.

Does your dog jump through the kitchen window to help save the day?

A possible home invasion is why I learned capoeira. That way if a guy busts into my house I can break into my capoeira, and while the guy is busy trying to figure out whether I'm fighting or dancing my wife can hit him with a frying pan.

I was actually going to suggest this exact strategy.

Well the truth is very few states report a crime called home invasion and everyone's definition is different. Given that if we go with robbery we find that the FBI stats say:

In 2010, the last year for which full statistics are available, the robbery rate in the United States was at its lowest level since 1968 (1960 is the first year in which FBI statistics were compiled).
Robbery is probably the primary stat where home invasions would show up but it is inexact.
