Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (4 Viewers)

By the way, there's no way Oliver H chose Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros or whoever that was. I was going to write about it the other day, but my attention was called elsewhere.

At least, I'd put serious money that didn't crack his top thirty-one.

who, what, huh? ...these guys??? ...GTFO

never heard of them - looked them up, apparently "Home" is one of their more popular songs ...it's ghastly

if you like whistling you may take a shine to it though.

sorry - that whistling put me a bit on edge

He hasn't submitted a list yet, and I truly have no idea what could be on it. Some of the stuff I think would be a slam-dunk for him he's reacted to with "maybe," and then he names some band I've never heard of instead. There's a song doing surprisingly well that I think his votes could help, but he's a wildcard right now, so who knows.

In other news, I actually had a chance to work on my own tonight, and I'm down below 50. Well, I was down to 32 in my drunken haze a week ago, but now I'm back up and wondering where some of those selections came from.

The decent part of "Home" was on a prolific commercial that ran during NFL games about 10 years ago or thereabouts - that's probably where most people would have gotten exposed to it. It's an ok song - I wouldn't call it ghastly. The whistling is a little weird.

Well, ****. I needed to vet my own list better. Portions (the important portions) of Love's catalog are ineligible due to Alban "Snoopy" Pfisterer 's having been born in Switzerland. Bah.

So Binky sent me a list of actually 612 artists. Thanks Binky!

My first round cut it down to 42. I then looked at my Spotify play list and verified 8 more. So now I'm at 50 artists. Some will have multiples. The fun begins...

Hey Krista, I saw the Fab Four tonight. They are all American!!! I'm submitting the songs they played tonight!!

Funny, I basically made a playlist where I would sing along to each song like no one is watching but it appears that my list is going to be a lot more " everyone knows that song, " compared to alot of you. So I'm the middle aged lame guy...... my kids would say I have been for awhile so at least I'm true to myself.

Though as a complete look at me aside, my oldest had gotten me to listen to death metal and there is one song so far that could be in the running for this kind of list of mine. Some good stuff there.

Ok, back to coffee.

I think mine is a lot of everyone knows that song too. Maybe a bit less songs to sing along to (some of that, but I’ve got some songs without lyrics, for example), but I don’t think obscure ones. So, I think there with you on the “lame” side with apparently a dash of “that guy” with the jazz.

I don't think he played on Forever Changes.
Yeah, I shouldn’t have said “the important portions” generally, but instead “the important portions for me.” The song I wanted is ineligible.

Mine looks like that too. Most people have certainly heard 30 out of my 31, and the one that might be just a bit obscure is by a band that really isn't. Like many of us in this thread I grew up with the radio and the record store, and didn't get high speed internet until my 30's. Looking back we were pretty vanilla even if we thought we were pretty contrarian at the time.

A question came up (well, in my mind at least) as to how to count different versions of the same song, for overall song ranking purposes. Here's my ruling:

1. Different versions of the same song by the same artist - for instance, a live vs. studio version - count as the same song for tabulation purposes.
2. Different versions of the same song by different artists count as two different songs for tabulation purposes.

So it is written; so shall it be done.

Noted in my little red book.

I saw Love (Arthur Lee with Das Damen backing) in 1994 and the set was dominated by songs from the first two albums. Only three from Forever Changes and maybe four from post-Forever Changes.

I saw Love in 2002 (Arthur Lee with Baby Lemonade backing) and the Forever Changes revival had happened and they played almost everything from it.

 Might have been our best opportunity to get Burt Bacharach in the countdown, though Chap might have chosen one in Dr. O's original.

there is no doubt that Burt Bacharach is a genius - his work was all over the radio waves and tv during my childhood

his work a few years ago with Elvis Costello is really enjoyable - they did a whole album

my preference is Elvis's collaboration with Carole King (with respect to wikkid ...)

how can this so beautifully combine the pop/motown of the 60's and still remain so relevant - really gives me chills ...I could listen to this and several cuts off this album over and over

krista - ya gotta forgive the sax

ETA: more on topic ...Burt Bacharach collaboration from the same album - sounds like the song from an academy award winning movie from '72 ...and I love it

I think that, as the person doing the work on this, I deserve a gratuity. Willing to accept 25%, giving me 38.75 songs to select. In spirit of generosity, I'll round that down to 38 songs. Thanks!
Funny you mention generosity …. I thought as a thank you for all your efforts it would be cool if we had an opportunity to donate $31 to your favorite charity?

OMG guys.....guys.....guys....GUYS.... I DID IT!!!!!11!!!!!!ONE!!!!! Now to actually rank them....sigh this is f'ing HARD.

If you'd narrowed it down to 31, there's an online tool that helps with ranking by breaking things down to a series of A vs. B questions. You'll need to create a login and the ranking process will require around 85 binary decisions. :oldunsure:

I'm just going with quick hits and what I would want to hear before this. It's the way I did the exclusions...I love song X and Y but which would I prefer to hear right now. I am sure this lists ranking would change last year vs this year, etc...

Hi folks. So...I'm the friend of Pip's Invitation, the guy who had him submit my list for me.

And I was wondering if was okay to hang with you people. This is a fun topic.

Hello, Dr. Ian. Do you know my personal favorite television doctor, Dr. Nick?

"Why if it isn't my old friend Mr. McGregg with a leg for an arm and an arm for a leg!"

Regardless of whether or not you get that, welcome to the forum.

Oh! I forgot it looks like he’s doing one now. At first he said he wasn’t. Thanks for catching that.

On the same note, so far we only have 7 entries so far in the Charity Contest - and it's easier than ranking your 31 choices, trust me! In fact, you don't even have to be planning on submitting a Favorite 31 list to have a shot at getting a donation to your favorite charity - just IM me with your picks for "Most Popular Song" and "Most Popular Artist", and we'll take care of the rest!

Explain the context...unless this is just b/c Pip happens to be a fan? (I like him, FWIW)
 It was a friendly nudge at Pip. Don't pay any attention to me - no one else does.
No worries! He's well known for his extensive knowledge of all things music and occasional forays into destroying equipment.
How do you feel about this masterpiece?

I've Never Been To Me - Charlene

This has entirely too much context.

Bummer...hopefully entries will pick up. Benefits: it's free, it might lead to a donation on your behalf, and you get board bragging rights! Downsides: endless mocking by the Rannouses if you're wrong? It's worth the risk!

Val, I have your guesses, which I'm not sure if you counted in the official entries.
