Favorite 31 Songs by US Artists According to a Bunch of Middle-Aged Dummies (2 Viewers)

Setting aside any rain that is purple, which "rain" song was the top vote-getter:

Louisiana Rain - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
I Wish It Would Rain - Temptations
So. Central Rain – R.E.M.
Fire and Rain - James Taylor
Kentucky Rain - Elvis Presley
Box of Rain – Grateful Dead
Rainy Day Women #12 & #35 – Bob Dylan
I can tell you what should be last, but I don't want to offend whoever took it. You already know what I'd rank 1 & 2. The other 4 are fine songs.

Which "summer" song has garnered the most points:

Summer Babe (Winter Version) – Pavement
Summertime - Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald version only, without regard to any other versions that might have been selected
Summer Wind - Frank Sinatra
Boys of Summer - Don Henley
Summer Breeze - Isley Brothers

I am curious,what is the 1 trick?
All of their songs sound the same to me.

Keep in mind that I'm not Nirvana's intended audience and I'm sure there are nuances experts can point out that I'm missing. I'm not a big fan of the other grunge bands, either. Too much navel-gazing with too little art to prop it up.

I was thinking of doing some little teasers/guessing games. There are no prizes. I'd say just for fun, but maybe it's only fun for me? Nothing spoiler-y. and I wouldn't give the answers out at this time, but stuff like:

Which of the following grunge superstars received the most points: Pearl Jam, Nirvana, or Soundgarden?
Which song about September received more points: "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire, or "September Gurls" by Big Star?

I mean, I guess there are minor spoilers there in that you see that each got some points, but I don't think those are surprises.

What do you guys think?
I think Pearl Jam will have the most individual songs submitted, but Nirvana may have the highest point-getter.
Agree with my fellow Marylander here. I feel like most of the huge PJ fanboys aren't on the board anymore and the few who are didn't participate. So they'll get more songs but the high rankings belong to Nirvana.

I’m not sure what it takes to qualify as a fanboy, but I am a huge Pearl Jam fan. I can assure you that at least one Pearl Jam song got a very high ranking.

Unpopular opinion - I enjoy STP and Alice in Chains much more than Soundgarden.
Me, too, but they weren't one of the three listed. STP, AIC, and Soundgarden are - to me - miles more enjoyable than PJ (can not STAND Vedder's voice) and Nirvana (one-trick pony).

Pearl Jam

Nirvana
AIC

Soundgarden
STP

But I like them all. One of them had to be #5.

@Just Win Baby this has nothing to do with with this thread, but I spoke to a huge NCSU alum friend yesterday for the first time in probably 15 years. My company installed the foundations on the arena the Pack plays in and he (at the time) worked for the ready-mix company we used to pour those foundations. We became good friends and I was there for the first ACC game (against my Terps) the Wolfpack played. NCSU won that game. What I most recall is Damon Thornton dunking all over Mike Mardesich's head and worrying that the gym was going to collapse.

I mainly meant that there used to be a bazillion page Pearl Jam thread in the FFA and I was dragged along to a show with almost a dozen of the guys who regularly posted in it. AFAIK, only one of them is still active in the FFA.

Excellent work, everyone! The above are the only people who indicated interest but from whom I don't have lists yet. Mine is done except for playing around with the bottom five or so. And OH is out of town, coming back in tonight, and has been informed that he doesn't get a ride home from the airport unless he gives me his list first. I know Bluesbomber was working on his yesterday and sent me some bands for vetting. Hopefully the other four are still in, too! If you want to be in but are struggling with the deadline, let me know.
I have been absolutely swamped with RSV and Flu at work so haven't been able to work on this much. I started a preliminary playlist but haven't looked at it for a couple weeks.

I'll try to get it in order and submitted by tomorrow night but I can't make any promises. No need to extend the deadline for me if I don't get it done on time.

My list is really AAA’s favorite song from AAA’s top 31 American artists.

Interesting. I went by favorite songs at this point in my life. I left some very big names off my list.

I would have had only about 5-6 artists if I did that. Your way is definitely more accurate but I don’t think anybody would want me listing 15 Beatles songs in my worldwide top 25.

I meant I chose 31 different artists, but I chose the songs based on how I liked the songs, not how I liked the artists or how important I think the artists are.
Left off my list: Petty, Bruce, Pearl Jam, Hendrix, Aerosmith, etc.

Summer Wind - Frank Sinatra
Boys of Summer - Don Henley

I prefer this version of Summer Breeze

I'll guess that PJ has the most points.....I think their albums thru yield are overall better than Soundgardens discography....much of PJs earlier stuff is very accessible.....although Badmotorfinger might be my fave between the two bands....Nirvana just didn't have the volume of material......love them though and wish Cobain would've hung around with us.

For me, Screaming Trees is the best from that era, and obviously didn't have the same success the other bands had.

I'll take the E, W, and F September song.....but actually here's my favorite September song that I'm sure didn't make anyone's list.

I still remember that play. :wolf:

You got your hair slicked back and those wayfarers on?

I remember the thread I started where I listed all of the great Eagles solo songs from 1-1.

eta* People got a kick out that so I figure I'll paste the actual thread here. I wasn't lion.

@Pip's Invitation , OH’s list is in, and the top four are recognizable! Then things get more obscure, off and on. He has a surprising amount of very old stuff on there. I see at least one from the 1920s.
In some past draft, he shocked me (in a good way) by some of his picks. There's one artist in particular I remember and I'm wondering if he chose anything from that artist this time around. For some stupid reason, I thought he'd only liked underground punk bands. I made the same mistake with @rockaction many years ago.

Pm? Or just post the artist here. I don’t think asking about it is a spoiler.

I’m guessing Willie Nelson.

I'd say given the music I did indeed listen to and the way I presented myself on the board that your assessment was warranted. I mean, I was slightly more diverse, but sorely lacking in seventies music that wasn't disco or punk or sixties music that wasn't garage or country. For this exercise, I've chosen a few seventies songs that don't fall into the traditional proto-punk/punk genre but instead veer straight into the soul that you'd more appreciate and have gotten me to appreciate over the years.

Peace.

I suspect my list has one of the narrowest time ranges. Oldest song 1965, newest song 2003, for a range of 38 years.
I believe mine is 1966-2017. I didn't vet this, but now that you got this thought in my head I'll be surprised if I have anything from the 80's. I know a couple hip hop tracks were in consideration for the last 5 in, but they got squeezed.

@Northern Voice
@Doug B

I think you're the only ones who intended to send lists but we haven't heard from lately. Hope you are still in - let us know!

Here's a little inspiration: both the consensus "favorite artist" and "favorite song" categories seem to be very close two-horse races now, and your votes could be a deciding factor!

The top two songs are within eight points of each other! One has more total votes but a few middling rankings, while the other is on fewer lists but always ranked quite high.

jwb, who gave links and commentary!:

Dolly Dagger – Jimi Hendrix - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E2A60WslXg

I self-disqualified this because I suspect Mitch Mitchell played drums on it (he definitely played on the demo, but the final cut I’m not 100% sure as it was made later at another studio.) But five that missed is semi unofficial right? I also love the Band of Gypsies period but I’m more into playing the albums than highlighting individual cuts. If Dolly is indeed disqualified even for this, we can substitute Machine Gun for my Jimi fix.

Bad Girls – Donna Summer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzxW4eu9heY

Pure disco baby!! I liked disco as a kid, and have grown to appreciate it more as I get older. It brightened up the 70's.

Jeremy – Pearl Jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQtPzo-7AHs

Grunge was my last “new music”. I checked out around 2000, and not much released since has made enough of an impression to make this list. That says more about me than the music – I’m too lazy to really look. Hopefully I’ll hear some good stuff in this countdown.

What a Fool Believes – Dobbie Brothers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EvCPfvBC0g

I didn’t vet the Doobie Brothers but I’m sure someone has a song in their top 31 so they would have made the do-not-draft list. Good song, and Michael McDonald singing means it’s a Yacht Rock rep too.

I Got a Name – Jim Croce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cadvn16N188

Always liked this song but its use in Django Unchained was really well done and elevates it to “near the list” status.

simey:
1. Basin Street Blues - Dr. John
2. Heard It in A love Song - The Marshall Tucker Band
3. Crazy - Gnarls Barkley
4. Ol' 55 - Tom Waits
5. Letter to Madeline - Ian Noe

krista4:
32 – I Figured You Out – Elliott Smith - this was in my top 31 the entire time until a cut at the very end because - spoiler alert! - I couldn't justify two Elliott Smith songs on there. Tough cut for me.
33 – Sir Duke – Stevie Wonder - for years I thought this was my second-favorite Stevie song, until my friend Doug commented that the use of the slide whistle was "as if in the middle of the Steiger-Brando taxi cab scene from Waterfront, right before Terry says, "I coulda been a contenda," Benny Hill sticks his head in the window briefly and mugs for the camera." So now I can't hear it without thinking of that.
34 – Ben Folds Five – The Luckiest
35 – Tom Waits – Tom Traubert’s Blues (Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)
36 – Nanci Griffith/Iris DeMent/Emmylou Harris – Are You Tired of Me Darling

Oliver Humanzee:
32. You're The Reflection of the Moon on the Water--Grant Hart - he didn't officially give me this, but after providing his list this morning, he texted me from work because he'd forgotten one of his top five favorite artists ( ), so when I inserted that one and dropped other songs down, this one came off the list.

I think those are all the "last five out" I have, so please let me know if I missed you. It's been hard to keep up with the various messages and all the mid-stream changes that have been made.

For the real countdown, I'll fix formatting so that it's consistent, but it's a huge pain and not worth my time on the last-five-out lists. I also didn't vet any for eligibility, except one that I happened to notice didn't qualify.

Thanks for sharing. That is so cheesy. Why the hey is that there?

Initially, my decade breakdown surprised me but then I realized that most of my high school year favorites were European bands. I also started listening to and purchasing a lot more music in my 20s (most of the 90s) and beyond.

60s: 6
70s: 6
80s: 1
90s: 12
00s: 5
10s: 1

34 lists in.

484 different artists (more or less). Keep in mind that I count some songs for more than one artist - for instance, a Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg collaboration will be counted for both of them if one is "ft." on it.

After all that, fewer than ten points separate the first- and second-place artists. Amazing.

Northern Voice might send a list tomorrow, and I'm still hopeful that Bluesbomber will send his, too. I'll go ahead and post #31 for everyone tomorrow and add those if they come in late.
